' m,. The following from the Post master at Hawkinsville through the News and Dispatch, applies with equal force to every postoffice in the United States. The daily average of mail mat ter sent to the Dead Letter Office at "Washington, D. C., from all' over the United States is over twenty thousand pieces- The num ber sent from our Hawkinsville postoffice is about one hundred per month.- This great amount of mail matter that cannot be cteliver e cl not only entails vast labor and ex pense upon the Postoffice Depart ment, but also occasions loss and inconvenience to that portion of the public affected thereby. It is the earnest desire of the Postoffice Department that this un fortunate state of affairs be reme died. To the end that the postal service may be improved in this re spect in our community the edi tors of the Dispatch and News have kindly consented to publish this brief statement of the facts. The public alone can remedy tlie difficulty. Mail matter must, be carefully and legibly directed. It should have on the outside, Return to -(the sender giving bis postoffice address) if NOT CALLED FOB IN -DAYS. The Postal Laws require us Jo advertise all matter not called for within, ten days after it is received, and to send such to the Dead Let ter Office as cannot be delivered within thirty days. Misdirection, incorrect, illegible and deficient address are the lead ing causes why mail matter does not reach its proper destination. If due care were exercised in these particulars the trouble would largely be remedied. These state ments are made in the hope that they may lead to an improvement in the postal service of Pulaski countydn regard to mail matter which cannot be delivered for . the reasons mentioned. B. F. Parsons, P. M. 1'ew York World. Secretary Windom boasts that the treasury has disbursed 853,- 000,000 within the last twenty- three days for bond purchases, an ticipated interest and pensions. He states also, in the same spirit of glorification, that he paid during the first eighteen months of the present administration nearly? W0,- 000,000 upon the unmatured obli gations of the government. In spite of these and other ex traordinary disbursements the money has been, most of the.time, tight. Aud congress has, during the past six months, passed appro priations with a recklessness un parallelled hitherto, fo the end that there may be no surpias hereafter either to retain money from the- channels of business or to make the treasury an ally of Wall Street., Where did all the money letely disbursed or still locked up, come from? From the pockets of the peopl e. Every dollar of it was collected in taxes, one ‘ fourth of which have been unnecessary. If the government had left every dollar not neededfor the legitimate expenses where that dollar rightly belongs—in the pocket of the man Dengue fever is prevailing in Brunswick. “Luick Stones” are poor builbing material to rear a fortune with. There are three hundred life term convicts in the Georgia peni tentiary cbaingang. After all, Florida will have a good crop of oranges this year. The crop of tourists also promises to be as large, if not larger. A queer religious sect have been discovered at Jeffersonville, Ind. They refuse to employ ministers or to build churches. They take the Bible as their sole guide, aud aDy member cun administer the right of marriage. The best voice in the choir of St Paul’s Church in Des Moines, Iowa, belongs to a boy only eight years old. He can render solos from the English Cathedral ser vices that would dc credit to opera singers. . who earned it—there would have been no surplus to incite: extrava gance, no lack up of currency to cripple business. For six years the democrats in congress tried in vain, against con stant republican opposition aud ob struction, to stop the surplus by reducing taxes. Within a year and a half after obtaining unchecked control of the government the re publicans have spent the surplus plus and have dow forced a bill through congress increasing the taxes to prevent a deficiency. It is the people’s money that pays for all this. The election will show what the people think of it. ■i i .' : 1 i Pawnee Bill and his wife with his Indians and cowboys, will be at the exposition again. In England and other parts of Europe, horseshoes are now in use, made of cowhide instead of iron. The shoe is composed of three teicknesses of the hide which is.pressed into a steel mold and af terward treated by a chemical preparation. The shoe is quite smooth on the outside surface, no calks being needed, as the shoe ad heres .firmly on polished pave ments. It is claimed this shoe is much lighter than the iron one, lasts longer, and that the hoofs of horses wearing them never split. . At the age of thirteen my son became affected with chronic di arrhea, caused by scrofula. I gave him Bull’s Sarsaparilla and it cured him. I recommend it espe cially for scrofula, fever sores and general debility. The cures I have known it Jo make in some cases seemed almost miraculous.—Jennie Johnson, Benton Barracks, Ho. ANeosho, (Kan.) county farm er sent this mixed order to a Cha- nute merchant: “Send me a sack of flour, five pounds of cofe and one pound of tea. My wife gave birth to a big baby boy last night, also five pounds of corn starch, a screwdriver and flytrap. It weigh ed ten pounds and a straw hat.” Good Advice. 'Several years ago I was covered Boils to such an extent that my life was a misery. After trying a number of other remedies without any ■"benefit, I was advised by a wholesale druggist at Columbus to try SI S. S. (Swift’s Specific). One bottle of S„S. S. cured me entire ly. I have not had a Boil since. To those .afflicted with Boils or Skin Eruptions I giye the same advice my wholesale druggist gave me—take S. S. S. David Zartsian, Druggist, Independence, Ohio. May 10,1890; Paper Barrels- After three years..of expert mental work? an English company has succeeded in producing paper barrels which are able to compete favorably withe barrels made of wood. The paper barrels are used at present, principally for the car riage of gunpowder, mining fuses, fruit, flowers, molasses, paints, ce ment, matches, chemicals, dyes, asbestos, sugar, size and extract of meat, The materials used making the barrels are waste pa per cardboard and (for the better qualities) old sacks.—When card board is used it is soaked or boil ed for six hours and afterwards treated in the same manner as the other raw material. This is care fully sorted and put into a rag en gine or beater; where it is beaten and torn to pieces by a series of knives for about an hour and a half. It is afterwards mixed with water until a pulp of uniform con sistency is gained. This is rolled, joined, shaped and dried,, and the barrel finally-covered with hoops. Before the tops and bottoms are put in, the barrels are painted with a waterproof composition, made of linseed oil and rosin, for ordinary purpose barrels, and with-a special varnish where they are used for food products;' The standard size made is 16^ inches in diameter by 28 inches long. The price at which these barrels 'can be* pro duced enables them to compete fa- •ably with wooden bariels; a barrel costing 34 cents in wood can, when made of paper, be sold for 28 cents. One great feature is that there is no waste' with" the process, all “wasters” being beat en up into pulp again. a prompt cure. I was cured sound and well of a case of Blood Poison by S. S. S.
