" '' ' mjgpi * Catechising His Grandpa. Hartwell Sen. Uncle Rafe was sitting where his cabin cast its longest and cool est shadow's the other day, idly dozing and dreaming of the happy days “’fo’ dewah, when de ’pos sum an’ de coon wuz plentiful an’ fat,” when one of his grandsons, a lusty jet black fellow of sixteen, startled him rudely with the quer- ry ; ; “Gran’dad, is yer up on Scrip ter?” “Eh?—whodat—whut yo’ say? —up on Scripter? ’Cose I is—1 knows all ’bout de Bible frum Jinnersis an’ Exodius cla’r tru’ to; de back uv de book at Revenuela- tions,—’cose Ise up on Scripter; an’ looky yer, boy, yo’ better ’gin to s’arch dera Scripter right in de days’of yo’yufe, ’fo’de evil days draw nigh ter ye- an’ yo’ cain’i!” “Dat’s all right, gran’dad, but who wnu de father of Zeberdee’s chill n?” “Cum yer closer, boy, I didn’t zackly hear wbut yo’ sed.” . The boy advanced iu reaching distance and yelled m the old man’s ear: “Who wuz de father of Zeberdee’s chillim?” “Ev bum—now T un’erstan’,” re marked the old man, as he caught the yourg buck suddenly in the collar and de'tly laid him over his knee and began to use the flat of his hand in the most effective man? ner. “Wanter know who’s cbillun Zeberdee’s father wux, duz yer?— I’m gwinter beat dat right inter yer rdronatermy right hqw; yo’ see—bif!—Zeberdee’s gran’mud- der by his fus wife—bif! bit!—wuz fus c’nzin ter his mudder-in-Jaw’s fas husban’, bif!—nn’erstan' ’? bif— which is purty much de same ez German c’uzin’ ter e- Irish wash- er’oman!”—bif!—bif! And as the exasperated old man let the struggling youth go he con tinued: “Now yo’ g’won ’way f’um here wid yer projeckin—en see ef yo’ cain’t tell dem boys ober yan- der dat yo’ gran’daddy’s been ka’fsolin’ yo’ pants, an’ dat I tole yo, Zeberdee wuz de reg’lar bus- ban’ of de mudder of Zeberdee’s chillun’.” And the old man smiled sardoni cally as he contentedly sank back in his chair and calmly resumed his dozing and dreaming. Physicians say that cases of ner vous prostration are less frequent since low heels have come into fashion. They allow the whole weight of the body to rest on the feet,.remove the tension to which the muscles are subjected by high heels, and keep the calf of the leg in its normal condition. Harvey’s Wonderful Power. From The Farmer and Exchange. A young printer employed by the Blakely Printing Company is astonishing bis associates with some marvelous feats. The accu racy with which he takes measure ments -with bis eyes and mind seems.really supernatural. In us ing pica measure—a pica is one- sixth of an Inch—he employs no guide to aid Mm, but adjusts his stick, cuts rules and leads the de sired length by measuring the- siderable wounds on your trees. Sbon we shall be in a position to defy fate. Says the Illustrated American: “A company has been formed to build tubula steel pas senger cars which shall not give way under any shock to which they may be subjected. The cars will not telescope in a collision, and if rolled down an embankment the passengers will be only bruised. It is proposed that a train of such cars shall be practi cally a continuous steel projectile which cannot be seriously damaged in ordinary circumstances.” Newspapers in the City of Mex ico call on the government- to ap peal to the postal union against the action, of the United States government in forbidding the tarnsportation of Mexican newspa pers containing lottery advertise ments, notwithstanding the news papers bear the Mexican postage. The Spanish government in tends to enter negotiations with the United States goverment for reciprocal concessions touching Cuban and American products. When? When sores break out on your person, when pimples cover your face, when you feel weak and de bilitated, and your.nervous system feels shattered, when you have aches and pains, when your appe tite fails, when ydu are troubled with dyspepsia, when there is a general functional derangement and life hardly seems worth living; give Dr. Bull’s Sarsaparilla a trial and you will be delighted at its pleasing effect; As a general health restorer and strengthener of the whole system it is superior to any other compound. It will not harm the most delicate invalid and' has saved thousands from a premature grave. space in his mind. In giving, an exhibition of bis powers yesterday he took nine pieces of brass rule and cut them to 6, 7, 8, 9,1.0,11, 12,13,14 and 15 pica ems respect ively, and on measuring the cut rules they were found to be the ex act length. He then cut twelve pieces to one length without com paring them. The pieces were gathered and compared and could not have been shaved nearer one length. He tells longer measures with equal accuracy. A piece of wood was handed him and he was asked the length of it. “Two fee.t, five and three-eighth inches,” was the quick and absolutely accurate reply. He was also asked if a cer tain block was square. “One of its angles lacks a little of it,” be answered. The angle referred to was found to be slightly acute. An other curious freak of this printer is that he never carries a watch, but is a positive regulator at tell ing the hour. One dark afternoon, after not having seen a clock all day, one of the men jestingly ask ed him the time of day. “Seven minutes after 3,” was the prompt reply, and . all the correct watches in the house testified to his accura cy. To more fully test his ability in this direction, his room-mate awoke him a few nights ago and put to him the query a3 to the hour. The reply this time was, “twenty minutes after two,” which was correct to a minute. The young printer dislikes notoriety and refuses to use his peeMiar gift publicly for gain. His name is Joe Harvey.' Since a boy he has been able to accomplish remarka ble feats of this kind, jHe Answered Promptly. - Just after Andrew Johnson had vacated the presidential seat, the manager of the Simpson County (Ky.) She was in the last stages of consumption, told by physicians that she was incurable and could live only a short time; she weigh ed less than seventy pounds.
