A Letter Wliiclr Never Went. People who think the country is progressing at a gallop never visit thelrural hamlets, says the New York Snn. I was in a small village in NewJHampshire the other week, when a woman came into the post office, which was in the back endof a general store. She had a letter' in her hand marked “In haste.” “Mr. Stubb3,” she said to the postmaster, “won’t a cent carry this letter?’ ‘“No, Mrs. Judy.” “Is postage stamps down any?” “Just the same.” “Will you lick on the stamp?” “Ye’m.” “It’s a letter I’ve. - writ to my sis ter in Massachusetts.” “Yes’m-” “There ain’t no money in it.” “No’m.” “it’s just family news, you know.” “Very well.” "Didn’t know but it might git open, and so I used paste to stick it.” “Yes’m.” “When will it go out?" “In the morning.” “And when’ll she get it?” “In two days.” “Will you warrant it?” “Can’t do that Mrs. Judy,” “You can,t! Then what’s the ase o’ my sending it? That's what I told ’em when you was app’inted postmaster. I sayB: ‘Will Jim Stubbs, who once beat my husband out of a load of hay, warrant our mail to be all wool and a yard wide, or will the colors run on us and dye the* crock?’ That’s what I asked, Jim StabbB, and nobody has an swered me yit." “Do yon wish to send your lett- ter Mrs. Judy?” “No! I don’t take no chances. She might git, and then ag’in she mought’nt Samuel is goin’ down that way in the spring, and he can take it himBelf, and 2 cents don’t |jrow every bush, Jim Stubbs!’’ American Razors In Demand. Seleet Siftings. The cremation of a corpse is said to cost S60. A thriving mining town in Cali fomia is named Gimletville. A banter at Columbus, Ga., re sulted hr two men swapping their artificial legs. Man requires eight hundred pounds weight of food in the course of a year. A Joliet (111,) woman who keeps a notion store has recently fallen heir to 89,000,000. . An Oswego (N, Y.) young lady- made 700 words of the letters con tained in “conservatory.” A Missouri peach has been found that measured 11* inches in cir cumference, and weighed 13J ounces. Seven miles from the earth is the greatest altitude yet attained by aeronauts, and was reached by Messrs. Glaisher and Coswell on September 5,1862. The engineer on a locomotive near Green Cove Springs, Pla., re cently caught gtwo partridgesjin his hands out of a covey while fly ing through the cab. A birdjfancier of Washington, whojhas twenty**parrots, says’that the Mexican double-heads are the best talkers, while the African grays make the best mimics and whistlers. Experts say that the burned ruins of Pompeii have not yet yield ed up a[third of its artistic treas ure, and that at'tbej present rate of progress several years will elapse before it is thoroughly un earthed. The best razors no longer come from Sheffield, and even English- men are alive to the fact. The best customers for razors are of English and Scotch descent, very few Germans or Irishmen act as their own barbers. Formerly nothing without a genuine or fraud ulent Sheffield trade mark cut into the blade would be bought by an ex subject ot Queen Victoria, but now American goods are generally pre ferred, and some eastern makes are very popular. The greatest run the last two years has been on a razor with a distinctly military name, and although I have sold a great many of the land I don’t know where they are made. But the fact is immaterial, for no pur chaser ever finds fault with any thing connected with one in any respect save price, and even that is not seriously objected to.—Inter view in St Louis Globe-Democrat. A New Yorker, who has recent ly spent some time in the literary circles of London, says that there must be at least 100 biographies of Mr. Gladstone already in manu script, awaiting the event of his death, at which time they will be ready for publication in book form. Beside these maauscripts, .there are to be found in the pigeon holes of the newspapers offices sketches of the aged statesman’s life, in readiness for the dispatches am nouncing the end of his career that may be received at any time. Mr. Broughton, the English art ist, expresses surprise at the mag nificence of New York, and recent ly remarked: "I know of but few interiors in London where there is such splendor of decoration and furnishing, and at the same time such thorough- good taste, as I have seen here. The splendid paintings, rare tapestries, porce lains, bronzes, carvings and what not are to be seen in a profusion here that simply is bewildering.” California prunes are now lead ing the French article in the New York market from 2*to 2^ cents. A little while ago we were taking les sons from France in growing and packing this fruit In raisins we are competing successlully with Spain. Our canned goods are find ing sales in Europe, and our wines are exported from year to year. The following written definition of the word “bachelor” was hand ed in by a fifth grade boy: “A bachelor is a man who has no wife, nor-wants-no wife, .nor can’t set no. wife.” French politeness has never sur passed that of the criminal wfeo, being placed on the guillotine re cently, put his head in the half moon, and smiling at the execu tioner, Baid: “Cut away, if you please, sir.” A doctor and an undertaker heard of a man who was hurt near Menominee, Mich., and rode to the scene of the accident in the some rig, the former taking his pill box, and the latter his coffin. The doc tor gotjthe gob. James Keith, of Caldwell, Tex as, has a beard seven feet long. He has declined an oiler from P. T. Barnum, and says that he is too much interested in his two flocks of Texans—one of children and one of sheep—to leave them. Heathen nations have widely dif ferent legends as to the origin of woman. The Japanese believe that she grew on a tree; the Lap landers that she was once a rabbit the Persians that she fell from the heavens, and the Australians that she was once a toad. - One of the sights daily seen on the streets of Arlington, Ga., is' a cat and a pig following each other about. They have formed an at tachment for each ofher and are inseparable. If any one tries to separate them the] cat will make a circuit and get back to the pig. The hottest day of] the yeai at New Zealand usually comes at Christmas. This is a great occa sion for picnics' in the coolest nooks of the woods.. The only recollection of the Christmas din ner of Western nations, is the plum pudding, which is religious ly eaten, but to the accompani ment of cold lemonade instead of coffee. , Cancer. « . To ABB (Botanic Blood Balm) has been given tiie credit of caring that terrible symptom of heredita ry blood poison called cancer. Allan Grant, Sparta, Ga., writes: A painful sore came on my lip which was pronounced epitlfelial cancer by prominent* physicians. I also had mnch pain and great weakness in the back. - Eight bot tles of B'B B healed the sore, gave me strength and made me'well.” G. F. Kellar, Wrightsuille, Ga., writes: “B B B is curing an ulcer on nay nose, said by all to be a cancer.” James A, Greer, Athens, Ga., writes: “For ten years I have been a sufferer from a cancer on my face, which discharged offensive matter. Nothing I tried gave re lief. Finally I gave B B B a tri al.
