Profitable Philanthropy.
One of the level headed men of Tt ^ k is said to be cheap, but if it
the valuation commission now in
session at the state house is "Capt.
Pavid H. Ingraham, of Rockland,
says the Lewiston Jon rnal. Every
one who knows the captain has no

wears a fipe silk hat. He was in
business in Boston many years,
and one day a young man entered
his office and wanted to' borrow
§500 to buy a small hat store. The
captain lent it to him, he bought
the store,' "and to-day he is one of
the wealthiest and inoslfprominent
. hatters of the Hub. Every, fall, as
regular as the season rolls round,
■ Capt. Ingraham receives as a gift
from the Boston gentleman, a. pol
ished silk hat of the finest quality
that can be manufactured. Sum-
. mers, he is the recipient from the
same source, of a natty kersey hat
for hot weather wear. On another
occasion, when the Cigar-makers’
Co-operative Association was form

SlOOjto begin business in the’asso-

he annually presents Capt. Ingra
ham with a box of the best hand
made cigars, rolled by himself.
Capt. Ingraham carries a magnifi
cent gold watch and chain which he
values far more.than forits intrin
sic worth. Tor-many years he did
business for the late Hon, Joseph
R. Bod well in Boston,, handling
nearly all the money which was re
ceived by the Hallo well Granite
Company, for stone furnished for
the. New York state house. After
the completion of the contract
Gov. Bodwell met Capt. Ingraham
in Boston, pulled the gold watch
and chain out and presented it to
him. It is a $200 time piece,, and
the recipient says he would not
part with it for §1,000.

Here are a few of the reasons
giveuHor claiming legal separation
on the part of married couples in
Italy: One man called his wife’s
sister a thief. A husband had
beaten his wife’s pet dog.ffAnoth-
er constantly chewed tobacco. A
third cut off his wife’s curlsjwith-
out her consent. A fourth refused
to take his better half out fora
walk. A fifth compelled his wife
to sit up talkng with him until af
ter midnight, when she- would have
preferred going to sleep. One la
dy refused to sew on her husband’s
- trousers buttons. Another lazily
staid in bed until noon everygday.
A third would not let her husband
go near the fire on;a cold - winter’s
day. A fourth “lady” dragged her
husband out of bed by the beard.
A fifth went strolling arourd the
town: instead of attending- to her
domestic duties.
One of the stories told of the
Muses is that connected with'the
nine daughters of Pierios, king of
Aematkia, who challenged them .to
a contest in singing. The Muses
consented, and fixed the place for
the trial at Mount Helicon, a well-
known mountain in Greece.' It is
said that when’the nine mortals
r . began to sing the sky became dark
and all nature was put out of har
mony, _but when the Muses raised
their voices the heaven itself, the
stars, the seas and rivers stoodjmo-
tionless, ahd Helicon swelled.up
with delight so that its summit
nearly reached the sky. The Muses
then turned the maidens into mag
pies, who, continue to chatter and
imagine that they make sweet mu
sic to this day.
