Apropos of], the death . of Gen.
Cadmus Wilcox, writes a New
York Tribune cprrespondence, I
recall soine original and character
istic anecdotes concerning Stone
wall Jackson, -which he \Vas .in the
habit of relating. When Jackson
first entered West Point he was re-
garned as a remarkably stupid and
green.youth. Gen. Whiting, who
afterward served in the Confeder
ate army, was then a cadet in the
class above Jackson’s, and was ap
pointed to ask him some questions
in mathematics, in accordance with
the custom which then preyailed
at the military academy. Whiting
thought him at first remarkably
dull, but noticed that he studied
and worked with dogged persisten
cy. The class of which Wilcox
and Whiting were members was
graduated just prior to the Mexi
can war. Several of the young of
ficers were in Washington on their
way to Mexico, and on the night of
their arrival they were invitecLto
go with Jefferson Davis, then a
member of-the House, to a recep
tion given at the. White House.
Later both Davis- and T. J. Jack-
son turned their faces j toward the
Bio Grande. At the close
of the war Jackson ranked
every member of his class and was
a brevet major, and was stationed
in Governor’s Island near New
York. Whiting, Wilcox and a
number of young officers were vis
iting New York, and when several
brother officers from Governor’s
Island called on them Whiting
asked:
“What has becom of Tom Jack-
son ; how is he getting on ?”
“Badly, badly,” replied the of
ficer;” since he has stopped fight
ing he has taken to fiddling. He
came over to this city a few weeks
ago and bought a -fiddle, several
bows and a pile of rosin. You re
member at West Point tli^re was
no music in his soul, no- poetry, no
relaxation, nothing but hard appli
cation to his-text books. So his
new fad mokes it awful for us.
Every minute he can spare he de
votes -to practicing on the fiddle,
nnd the sounds which fill the bar
racks in his vicinity are beyond
description; almost beyond endur
ance.”
“Be patient,” said Whiting, with
a smile; “if Tom Jackson is deter
mined to master his violin you
will listen to a second Paganini
before lie gives up;”
But Whiting’s prediction was
never verified, 'Jackson never be
came a musician.
Rev. Augustus Tolton,‘the first
colored Roman Catholic priest or
dained in the United States,
preached in St. Patrick church,
Twentieth and Locnst streets,
Philadelphia,'recently to a congre
gation that crowded the large edi
fice. Father Tolton reviewed his
life. . He said he was born in 1854
of parents who were slaves. While
yet a child his home was visited by
a missionary priest, who instructed
the family in the commandments
and baptised them. Young Tolton
was sent to school to the Sisters,
and afterwards to St. Francis col
lege, and thence to Rome, where
he was ordained a few years ago.
He is at present collecting for a
new church.

Governor Boies, of Iowa, says:
“■It is infinitely better that this na

The transition from long, linger
ing and painful sickness, to. robust
health marks' an epoch in the life
of the individual. Such a remark
able event is treasured in the
memory and the agency whereby
the good health has been attained
