Newspaper Page Text
■There has recently been quite a
discussion in the various religious
papers concerning the location of
the smallest church in the world.
The French papers aided by the
valuable researches of Professor
Lesqueraux, have been 4 getting the
best of the argument until recent
ly, when some one discovered a
twenty-year-old article by Moncure
D. Conway in Harper’s for March,
1870, where that able writer gives
a description of two miniature
places of worship. The first is at
Bonchurch. Conway gives the fol
lowing concerning it:
It cannot be ten yards long, and
is only three or four wide; it ha3
seyen pews and four galleries, and
might hold twenty persons. There
is still regular preaching hgre, the
large part of the congregation be
ing seated outside.
Further on in the same article
he says, in describing the village
of St Lawrence, on the Isle of
Wight: The villages noted for
its queer little church, the small
est in the world. It is twenty-five
feet long and eleven feet wide, and
about as high as a tall man. Its
walls are Saxon/and very old.
The location of several other
small and unique churches has
been made public since this dis
cussion began. Among others, the
church inthe stump of a gigantic
red-wood tree’., in'some county in
Oregon, and the famous |“Bell
chapel,” of ^Moscow, where ser
vices are'regularly held in a large
bell, which has a piece out k of the
side, the opening being used as a
door.
A Feathered Industsy.
s
Speonk is .the "greatest duck-
raisiug.center on Long Island, if
not in this country. ByronfTuthiH,
. of that pretty village, speakiuglgof
thisjfeathered industry, said:
'“For jjthe season just ended, I
have no doubt'that the shipment
of ducks from Speonk has reached
forty-thousand. All the fowl raised
there are for; the market. The Pe
kin variety of-ducks seems to be
the favorite with raisers. Some
Mnscovy are raised, but they do
not grow so rapidly nor become so
largo asjthe Pekin, though they
are, it is said, a more hardy breed. 1
Hurdihood is a very important
matter, as a great many ducks die
when young from cholera, or are
chilled by the cold weather. The
price generally returned from New
York is from 75 cents to SI for
each duck. On this basis Speonk
has received nearly 840,000 this
year for this business alone. Th
raisers begin to set their eggs in
incubators or under hens about
the middle of .January’, and the
first ducks are ready for the • New
York market about the last of
April. They theu.’gweigh from
three to five pounds. They are
picked before shipment, and the
feathers are scalded and sold at the
close of the season. It is expected
that the price of the feathers will
pay the cost o£ picking. Siuce the
charge of picking is from four to
five cents, it is easy to calculate
what it costs to strip 40,000 ducks
of their clothes. ^Incubators are
used by all large] reisers, and,
properly handled, they produce
excellent results. The picking of
the fowljis quitejauj’industry, and
many of the girls engagediu.it
hane made from 8100 to S200in
his way. Miss Annie Liscomb and
Miss Hettie Homan seem to have
made the best record. Each has
picked about 3,000 ducks, the for-
’ mer having prepared forty-seven
forfmarket in one day.”—[New
York Star.

It is said that when Washington

which Humbolt considered the best

the conclusion hat the first land
