The most complete statistics in
the world are those of the cotton
crop, and they are of immense val
ue to the great cotton houses of
this country. aDd Europe, bnt are
presented at times when they can
be of little use to the farmers. The
buyer or seller has means of kbow-
ing,the world’s stock and approxi
mately the size of the current crop
before he makes an investment, but
the farmer must pitch his 'crop, so
to speak, in the dark. This ought
not to be. There should be means
of finding out early in the year the
acreage of the Indian and Egyp
tian crops, the total supply from
that source and the probable in
crease in demand. There is a pro
gressive increase in the consump
tion of cotton and a progressive in
crease in the foreign supply, at least
from India. Within a decade the In
dian crop has increased from 750,000
to more than 1,300,000 bales, aver
aging 400 pounds each. But this
crop, thoughprogressivelyincreas-
ing, is not regular,- and in 1888
showed a marked decrease, which
it has since regained. Now as the
excess or deficiency of this crop
affects the world's supply, and as
it is planted some months earlier
than ours, we ought to have relia
ble statistics of the acreage before
the American cotton grower pitch
es his crop. This should be sup
plemented with reliable reports of
the condition of the trade, to show
whether tbe annual increase of
consumption would be likely to be
more or less than usual.
If we are going to have statistics
we ought to them in time to bene
fit the producer as well as the fac
tor. and the speculator.
• It may be said that tbe Indian
crop even yet contributes an insig
nificant part of the world’s supply.
This is not so true as it seems, for
though most of the cotton crop of
Indian is manufactured in that
country and the raw material does
not come directly in competition
with the American staple at Man
chester and Liverpool, the §33,-
500,000 of cotton'goods that India
exports takes the place of that
much value of cotton goods maun-
factured at Manchester of Ameri
can staple. The cotton goods man
ufactured in India of Indian cot
ton bring the raw material nearer
to the factory and the factory near
er to the consumer than is possi
ble in the case of English mills
spinning American cotton and
shipping it to China. This, no
doubt, partly explains the propor-
ports of cotton goods from India
than from England of late. The
Englishman knows how to take
care of the home market and he
knows how to take advantage of
the advantageous location of raw
material in India.
We have been in the habit of
thinking that we had a monopoly
in cotton. Perhaps it would be
safer policy to investigate the mat
ter more thoroughly—especially in
view of the progressive increase of
the Indian crop—and our investi
gations should be so arranged as to
furnish statistics in time to be of
use to the farmer when he pitches
his crop.
The Mormons are preparing to
leave Utah and go to Mexico.
They- claim that they are subject
ed to persecution; that much of
their land has been taken from
them; that their church property
is put under a taxation too heavy to
be borne, and that admission as a
Btate is denied them. They think
they are unfairly treated all
around. It will be a happy day
for Utah when the Mormons, po
lygamous. and otherwise, leave
there forever. Mormonism has
been a foul blot on tbe history of
the United States and the sooner
it is ended the better.
The most complex of all animal
tissues is the brain. „ The. fibres, of
one single optic nerve have been
counted under a microscope to the
number of' about 300,000. The
number in the brain must there
fore be immense. So with regard
to cells; they are countless. No
method of science has been able to
cdunt the cells in a single square
quarter of an inch of the outside
covering of the brain.
