The Rich 3Ian 5 s Party.
Atlanta Constitution.
CLIPPINGS.
. GEORU/A—Houston County:
mm
Since the failure of the desper
ate effort of ihe republican party
to perpetuate its power through
the medium of returning boards
fringed with bayonets, people are
naturally wondering what will be
the character of its future policy.
If the signs of the times mean
anything, the republicans will be
defeated in the next national elec
tion, and it is no rash prediction
to say that they will be on the los
ing side for a long time to come,
But, although the party is essen
tially a war party, it is safe to say
that it will-not disband and disap
pear. This organization has grad
ually become the aggressive rep
resentative of the political, econom
ic and social theories advocated by
Alexander Hamilton. In a word,
the central idea of republicanism
is that this -is a rich jnan’s govern
ment, in which the poor should
have no rights and no voice. With
the rapid growth of ereafc fotranes
in this country, a few privileged
classes, held together by the cob e
sive greed of capital-, have com
bined and plotted to turn the re
public into a plutocracy. In their
eyes the masses are simply so
much material for the tax and tar
iff mills to grind into powder.
The champions of these ideas
will die hard. They- have seen
their policy of -.sectionalism meet'
with such crushing and final de
feat that they will not attempt to;
revive it. Hereafter they will fight;
on economic lines. The demo
crats who see no danger in the new
republican plan of campaign are
short-sighted. The Blaines of the
rich man’s party will hold out daz-
-zling schemes, ranging from reci
procity to iuternal development,
and embracing territorial expan
sion. They will claim that .they
are going to favor southern de
velopment, and abolish} poverty
throughout'the land. They will
shout themselves hoarse, over the
wrongs of the masses, but they
will never lose sight of high pro
tection and the interests of the mo
nopolists and plutocrats. Failing
to reduce the people to serfdom by
pinuiug them down with bayontes,
they will attempt to make them
still more helpless by maintaining
the^present upjust financial system,
under which the rich grow' richer
.and the poor grow poorer.
Against such conspirators and
such a programme the only effect
ive fight that the people can make
must be in and through tne demo
cratic party. When the old theo
ry of Hamilton is to be wrestled
with again, nothing less than the
fierce democracy of Jefferson will
-be equal to the emergency.
Everything is rounding into ad
mirable shape for tlfe coming
struggle. The various organize,
tioris representing the interests of
the farmers and the toilers of the
land will naturally array their
compact legions in the solid phal
anx of democracy, because from
the very first down To this preg
nant hour democracy has been the
party of the people. Only under
fits banner can the masses success-
iully combat the classes, and only
ithrough the steadfast maintenance
of its principles can the govern
ment of .the people, for the people
and by the people be rescued and
upheld.
And so the whirligig of time
brings back the - old issues—op
pressed labor, the honest -pooi>the
masses, must again rally around the
standard oE Jefferson to try conclu-
:sions with the followers of Hamil
ton. If the freemen of America
.■are true to themselves, history will
u-epeat itself, and the republic will
’be redeemed.
