Children and Conversation.
Axcliangp,
Among the most freqently de-
nied rights of children is that to a
fair share in conversation. “Chil
dren skonld be seen, not heard,” is
one of"the cruelest maxims of ar
rogant selfishness. If yonr child
is courteous—and it is your own
fault if he is not—why should he
'- not have his little say and ask his
enrions questions concerning the
snbjects talked about at the dinner
table or in the sitting room ? He is
, hnngrierfor -information than for
his meals, and-has as gbftd a right
to the intellectual as the physical
nourishment. And who are you
that you should do all the talking,
condemning him to eat in silence,
or to sit mute while things that in
terest him are talked about? It is
really not of much consequence
- whether yon talk or not, bat it is
of great importance that he shall
talk. ' i'on have probably nothing,
of anj* importance to-say at any
rate-, and it is only that absurd
thing, your 'dfgnity, or that wicked
things yonr -nervous irritability,
that prompts you to monopolize
the conversation. The' child, on
the other hand, has something of
importance to sdy^ He has his
hungry questions to, ask. The
world is. all new and wonderful to
him, and he wants'to -know some
thing about it. Yon have said
something that he does not quite
understand, or which opens a new
mental vista-to-him; and he wants
to ask you about it. The asking is
education to him in the art of ex
pression, and yonr answer, if you
be wise and kindly, is education in
other .vays. He has a right to
ask, and it is yonr duty to answer
as carefully and as fally as you-
can. His education, the expres
sion' of the intellect, the shaping
of his character—all these are in
volved in your recognition of his
right to a share in the conversa
tion, and they arc of importance
not only to him, but to the commu
nity of which be is presently to be
a part. But aside from all this,
the loss is great to you, and to all
who sit at yonr board, if the alert
and eager little minds of the chil
dren are repressed under, a rule of
•silence. Their talk is amusing,
interesting and often instructive.
It is good for them and for their
elders. It tends to jollity and
good cheer. Where it is permit
ted there is good comradeship be
tween parent and child, and there
is nothing better for the soul of
man than comradeship with a
child. It keeps the mipd alert and
the spirit sweet and clean- There
is something radically wrong about
the man whose child is not the best
and most intimate friend he has.
The Monlcey In a Tree.
Buffalo Express.
Here is the latest puzzle: I see
ia monkey in a tree. He sees me
:and gets behind the trunk of the
tree. I start to -go atonnd.him
and he keeps going round as I do,
keeping the trunk of the tree be
tween him and me. I reached the
place I started-from, with the
monkey still - opposite me on the
tree. Now, having been around
the tree, have I also been around
thomonkey?
A Boston woman is quoted as
saying: “I tried it on my hus
band. I had him for the monkey,
and I' took a whisk-broom and
went around him, brushing his
•clothes. He kept turning around
just as I did, and when I had been
.clear around I had . brushed only
<one side of him and'one ' leg of his
pantaloons." Now, all the profes
,sors of Harvard University could
not convince me that I had been
’ around that man; neither .had, the
man been around the monkey in
the tree.’.’
What do you think?
.
