the villages, towns and cities in.aH
parts of the Union are increasing,
in population much more rapidly
than the rural districts,, and the.
farther fact that the towns and
cities are prosperous and prosper
ing, while many sections of the ru
ral districts are on the decline in
this particular.
Suclrexamination also discloses
the fact that mortgages on land and
other property m the country re
gions are multiplying with wonder
ful rapidity— Is this, or is it not
unmistakable evidence that the ag
ricultural classes of the country
are onTke decline financially?
Taking our own immediate sec
tion, as a criterion from. which to
- judge, no other conclusion can be
reached than that the towns and
citiesrare adding to their popula
tion By drawing from the rural dis
tricts.
This being true, is it then not
true that' every snch draft upon
the country is productive of more

it, in all probability, on account of

which most Englishmen believe
prints nothing but the truth.
But does not this Wilkes county
yarn contain a lesson for the news
papers of this country? Should
they not be more careful to print
only-what they, have good reason
to believe is true, and- should they
not make a greater effort to sift
