“A LITTLE NANNY-GOAT.”
Harper’s Young People.
A small girl—a very small one—
who did not shine particularly in
the way of goodness, was attended
by a nurse-maid who was a simple,
honest, religious girl, always mind
ful of her duty; and this duty, she
felt quite sure, pointed to the re
forming of the little heathen com
mitted to her charge.
On Sunday afternoons she often
took Miss Nellie to a meeting that
was held in the basement of some
place of worship, and the sur
roundings were very plain and
doleful, but the preacher was an
earnest man, and, to Hannah s
great delight, her young lady lis

eyes filled Axith tears, and she fail

the small maiden’s face after each

Finally the pent-up feelings
came to the surface; and one after
noon, as they were walking home,
Nellie indignantly exclaimed :“That
man’s an awful story-teller, and I
shan’t go there any more!”
“Tilt! tut!” sahL the horrified

Georgia has fared well in com

Turner goes back on ways and
means. Mr. Blount is to be chair
man of foreign affairs. Colonel
Lester is to’be chairman of expen

and a' member of rivers and har

appropriations, a committee where
he will have opportunity to make
a reputation. Colonel Moses fares
splendidly. He goes on agricul

goes on private land claims and
war claims; both good committees
Colonel Everett likewise gets good
assignments on the education com

the ' Mississippi river. Colonel
Lawson takes the Speaker’s old
place on the election committee,
a committee that will give him
splendid opportunity to make a
reputation. He also goes on ex

good committees, and he will have
ample opportunityltoj exhibit his

ARTIFCIAL IVORY.

The announcement is made once
more that chemistry has succeeded
in producing ivory by artificial
means. The process consists in
mixing the chief components of
the genuine article, phosphate of
lime, chalk, magnesia, ’ ’imina,gel
atine and albumen, ahd subjecting
them to great pressure. The first
step is to slake quick-lime, and
then, before the slaking is quite
completed, to pour on it a watery
ing added in small quantities while
the mixture is being stirred. Last
ly, the gelatine and albumen are
put in. The mass is then set aside,
to permit the. phosphoric acid to
continue its action upon the chalk.
This is' completed by the following
day, when the still plastic Mixture
is pressed into the desired moulds,
and dried in a current of air at a
high temperature: In three or
four weeks it is claimed that the
material is.quite hard and ready
for use. Whether it can be pol
ished, carved, or turned like the
veritable ivory remains to be seen.

THEM OUT.—
_ Scientists tell us
the best and safest
now that
way to cure diseases of the blood
and skin is to force out through
the skin the microbes or germs
which produce disease. In this
matter, Swift’s Specific has been
about sixty years in advance of
medical science, as it has for that
length of time been curing blood
and skin diseases, by eliminating
the germs and poison through the
pores of the skin. S. S. S, does
this effectually, safely and quickly.
It is entirely a vegetable com

, “What’s them, mum?” inquired
the waiter, helplessly.
This time she looked positively
severe, yet withal pitying.
“They are a species of morbid

these latter, from the sting of some

explained.
