THE WIFE’S STRIKE.
Detroit Free Ertss.
'l’he walking delegate never tires
o£ talking of tbe strike. He held
that it was justifiable if ever a
strike was, and he was prepared to
demonstrate that'it was perfectly
proper te strike to secure any de
sired result. He so told his wife,
and she seemed to agree with him.
She said it seemed to be the easiest
way of enforcing a demand.
Aud that night when he came
home he found that the table was
not set.
“I want a new ••dress,” she said,
when asked what tbe trouble was.
“I know. You’ve been bothering
me for that dress for a month” he
said, “but how about supper?”
“There isn’t any,” ' she. replied.
“This is a strike.”
“A strike?”
“Yes, a general tieup. I’ve been
trying to secure a peaceable settle
ment of this trouble for sometime,
but now I mean to enforce my
rights.”
“Mary do you dare” ?
“Oh, don’t talk to me that way
If I can’t get'you to arbitrate, why
I’ve got to strike. I don’t care if it
does block the wheels of trnde.”
“But, Mary you don’t under
Btand.”
Ob, yes, I do. I’ve made my
demands, and they’ve been ref ns
ed. I’ve asked arbitration with
view to compromise aud that has
also been refused. A strike is all
that there is left, and I’ve struck.
. “Hut your demands are unrea
sonable.”
“I don’t think they are.”
“You’re no judge.”
“You’re thejjudge of your own
demands when you strike, and I’m
just as good a judge as you are
when I want something. It’s no
use talking. The strike is on.”
She folded her arms in a deter
mined way, and he subsided. It
was perhaps half an hour later
when he looked up aud said:
“Mary is the Btrike still on?”
“It is still on,” she replied.
“Aren’t you hungry?”
“No. I saw^that 1 had some
thing in the treasury before the
strike was ordered.”
“Meaning the pantry?” be said.
“Meaning the pantry,” she re
turned.
“I believe I’ll get a bite,” he said
“It’s locked,” she replied.
“The reserve is to be used sim
ply to keep .the strike going. You
can’t touch the strike’s resource.
“Be careful, Mary,” he said warn
ingly. “It shuts off the cash”-
She laughed aucj nodded towards
the pantry.
“I can stick it out a week,” she
returued.
Five or ten minutes later he pro
posed that they compromise on the
basis of $10.
“Twenty,” she replied firmly.
“But that means ruin,” he pro
tested. “I can’t afford it.”
“That’s your business," she uuf-
wared. “I offered to arbitrate
once.”
It was 10 ' o’clock that night
when he finally gave in, aud some
how he felt that he had experienc
ed a new phase of the strike busi
ness. It looked different from the
other side of the fence.
