Jesus Healing the Nobleman’s
Son, John 4 : 43 54.
Golden Text—“Jesus said onto
him, thy son liveth: and himself
believed and his house.” John 4:53.
There was a robleman in Caper
naum who was in great trouble,
for his son was sick at the point of
death He lived only twenty mileB
from Cana where Jesus had turned
the water into wine for the wed
ding party, and of coarse every
body was talking about His great
power and loviDg kindness, for He
had gone to Capernaum from Cana.
He had Himself testified “a pro
phet bath no honor in His own
connntry.” Strange that He should
not have honor everywhere, and
that it is so to this day, for in none
other is there salvation, for neither
is there any other name under
Heaven, that is given among men,
wherein we must be saved
When Jesus came into Galilee,
the Galileans received Him, for
they bad’seen all the things that
He had done at Jerusalem, at the
feast ofthe passover, in whichthey
showed that they remembered the
Lord’s mercy in briuging our fath
ers oot of Egypt by night.
And when this nobleman of Gal
ilee heard tliat Jesus had come
again to Cana, he hastened to Him
as the only hope of his son’s life,
and besought Him to come and
heal him. Jesus knew that his faith
was real, but to try him, He’ said,
“Except ye see signs and wonders,
ye will not believe.” The anxious
father bad only one thing to say,
“Sir, come down, ere my child die.”
There was no hesitation in his
faith, and our Lord is always wait
ing to heal aud to save, even as He
said, “Whatsoever ye shall ask in
My Name, that will I do, that the
Father may be glorified in the
Son.”
There is nothing too lifted' for
Him to do, nothing too costly for
Him to give to His children, and
what joy must have filled the no
bleman’s heart as he heard the sav
ing words from the Great Physi
cian, “Go thy way,thy son liveth.”
It was not neccessaiy for the Heal
er to come to his house, he knew
it would be as the Lord had said.
On his way home his servants mat
him and said, “Thy son liveth,”
and on asking them when he be
gan to mend, they said, ‘/Yesterday
at the seventh hour,” so he knew
it was at the very hour that Jesus
had spokeu the words of life.
His son was well; howconld itbe
otherwise than for this whole fam
ily to believe in this Great Physi
cian? “Whithersoever He entered,
into villages, or cities, or country,
they laid the sick in the streets,
and besought Him that they might
touch if it were but the border of
His garment; and asmany as touch
ed Him were made whole.”
Our Savior is just as near us
now, just as ready to heal and save;
though we cannot see Him, we can
love and trust, “as seeing Him who
is invisible” in the hope of His
coming for those who look for His
appearing. “We know that when
He shall appear we shall be like
Him, for we shall see Him as
Heis.”
While I was up in Canada last
summer a venerable inhabitant told
me the reason why the farmers of
the Dominion raise so mnch hay.
He said that two or three centuries
ago tithes were imposed for the
benefit of the ehurch upon all ag
ricultural products* and a list was
made of them. The farmers were
compelled to give the priest one
bushel in twenty six of everything
they produced, whether it was ap
ples, potatoes, wheat, corn, onions,
Eftrnips, or any other grain or veg
etable. Every thibg that grows
was on tbs list except hay, which
for some reason was omitted, he
doesn’t know why. Pefhaps it was
a mistake, but it is more likely the
hay crop was so insignificant " in
those times that it was overlooked.
In 1764, when Canada passed from
French to British rale, the tithing
law was confirmed and ratified by
the treaty, and continues in force
this day in the province of Quebec
and wherever the Catholid chnrch
is strong. Therefore, to escape
tithes, the farmers raise hay.— W.
E. Curtis in Chicago Record.
Lemons Cure Grip.
To the Editor of The Telegraph:
It may interest your readers to
know that during the great influ
enza epidemic in London in 1889
the board of health of the city or
dered the public effected with the
disease to make an abundant,3,use
of-hot lemonade.
The perspiration caused thereby
is in most cases sufficient to relieve
the patient of severe colds, and
saves him from taking refuge in
quinine or other drugs, which of
ten do more harm than good.
In bronchial troubles the acid of
lemons relieves the irritation in
the throat, acting in the same time
as a natural disinfectant.
Very truly yours.

Dangers of tlie Grip.
The greatest danger from La
Grippe is of its resulting in pneu.
monia. If reasonable care is nsed,
however, and Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy taken, all danger will be
avoided. Among the tens of thous
ands who have used this remedy
for la grippe we have yet to learn
of a single case having resulted in
pneumonia, which shows conclu
sively that this remedy is a certain,
preventive of that dangerous dis
ease. It will cure la grippe in less
time than any other treatment. It
is pleasant and safe to take. For

its stages and that is Catarrh,
flail’s Catarrh Cure is the only
positive cure now known to the

a constitutional disease, requires a
constitutional treatment. Hall’s
Catarrh Cure is taken internally,
acting directly upon the blood and
mucous surfaces of the system,
thereby destroying the foundation
of the disease, and giving the
patient strength by building up

A Shining Mark.
A lady, grievously tormented
with a corn oo her toe was advised
by one of her friends to annoint it
with phosphorus, which in a weak
moment she did, but forgot to tell
her husband before retiring at
night. It had just tamed 12 when,
the husband awoke, and was star
tled to see something sparkling at
the foot of the bed.
He had never heard of a firefly
in the locality, nor did he ever re
member seeing such a terrible
looking object as the toe present
ed. Reaching carefully out of bed
till de found one of his slippers he
raised it high in the air and-
brought it down with great force
upon the mysterious light.
’ A shriek and an avalanche of
bed clothes, and all was over.
When at last he released himself
from the bedclothes, he discovered
his wife groaning in a corner of
the bedroom, but ahe bad not got
that phosphorated corn. —London

In an old “Dictionary of Com
merce,” published in 1850, there
is considerable comment upon Ma
nila and the people of the islands,
“A most intelligent navigator, De
le Perouse, says that these people
appear in no respect inferior to
those of Europe. They cultivate
the laud like men of understanding;
are carpenters, joiners, smiths,
goldsmiths, weavers, masons, etc.
I have walked through their villa
ges aud found them kind, hospita
ble and communicative; andthough
the Spaniards speak of and ' treat
them with contempt, I perceived
that the vices they attributed to
the Indians ought rather to be im
puted to the government they have
themselves established.”

is purely vegetable, a mild laxative,
and restores the system to its nat

This is the way in which the
Centralia, Kan., Journal editor an
swers a question propounded by a
stock raiser: “A rural subscriber
asks: ‘Do hogs pay?’ Weknow that
a good many don’t. They take the
paper several years and have the
postmaster send it back marked
‘refused.’ Such a breed is usually
two legged, and unprofitable.”
