CHAPTER XLII.
The two wild cars, uncontrolled,
continued to rush, with increasing
speed, down the grade untill- the
bottom was reached, and the op
posite grade wasenconntered where
gravity lost its force and the mo
mentum of the cars stood still.
When this happened we struck a
light to signal any train approach
ing from either direction. Soon
the engineer, who had gone on with
the remainder of the train to where
he conld side track it, returned
with the engine in pursuit of the
two runaway cars. We eignaled
him at the proper tuns, and he
coupled them, mithont accident, to
the engine, and returned to the re
mainder of the train to find the im
patient, waiting soldiers cursing at
somebody, they knew not whom
for accidents and delays. Soon the
train was again in motion and we
were slowly being wheeled in the
direction of Atlanta, reaching tha
city of the hills at about daybreak
to find it laid in_ ruins. Very few
buildings had been so fortunate
as to escape the incendairy’s torch
In fact we could scarcely pass
through thectty for the debris that
lay out in chaotic profusion before
us on all sides. The track of the
different railroads entering the city
had been torn up and the cross
ties piled and the track iron piled
upon them and burned till it was
warped and twisted into as many
' shapes as a politician’s platform
daring a heated., campaign, inclu
ding the promises made to meet
nonfulfillment. This piece of
wanton destruction was placed to
the credit of Sherman’s army the
year before. But such are the for
tunes of wer. The ineeudaiary’s
torch, cruel and wicked as it may
seem, is often resorted to, and often
plays an important role in the dra
ma of war; sometimes accomplish
ing what could not otherwise be at
tained, but there was no excuse
for the burning of Atlanta. Sher
man could have effected his march
through the Confederacy as well
by leaving Atlanta intact as he
did after it had been razed to the
ground, and this wanton destruc
tion of individual property, under
guise of military necessity, will
ever cast a reproach and foal blot
upon the history of that campaign;
and in this connection 'it can in
truth be said to the credit of the
Confederacy that in; no instance
did her soldiers, when upon the
enemy’s soil, resort to the inceD-
diary’s torch or loose respeot for
individual rights.
It will be news to the yonng
generation who have grown np
within the last thirty years to be
told that thirty five vears ago At
lanta, the largest, and in some re
spects, the most important inland
town, especially as a railroad cen
ter, in the south, was a mass of
smouldering ruins-'-the result; of

Strictly on schedule time, which
was early in the morning, the en
gineer, in cherge of the train
which was to take us to Macon,
sounded the whistle of warning
that he was ready to leave, and we
boarded the train and were soon
being slowly wheeled in the direct
ion of the central city. Every sta
tion between Atlanta and Macon
was thronged with jnbilant ne
groes,who had heard of “’mancipa
tion’ and were looking for freedom
its twin sister. They were then as
hilarious over the freedom craze as
they are now despondent at the
thought of 4-cent cotton,“jnanner”,
and high taxes. Some of them
had the wonderful temerity to twit
us for onr failure, and boast of
their emancipation, all of vyhicb
fell as harshly and as gratingly
upon onr ears as the chin mnsic,
which is now being chornsed at
Washington city, upon the Philip
pine question and expansion craze,
does upon the ears of those of the
American people, who recognize
the inherent right of every people
to govern themselves in their own
way without being subjected to
colonial vassalage and taxed to al
most confiscation to pay others to
regiment and company was com
plete; the several members having
at different points taken the short
eat and most direct routes to thei
homes from which they bad
long been absent and which they
were so anxious to reach. This
writer reached his home the next
day, the 19th of May, 1865.
Thus, after an abs&Dce of four
years, we reached onr homes pen
niless, except that we had §1.25
each in Mexican coin which Gen
Johnston took from the vaults of a
deserted bank in Raleigh, N. C.
which he "knew woald be looted by
the federals if he did not taka it
and distribute it to his men, which
was right and proper, becanss, al
though individual, it wa3 confed
erate property, and would fall in
to the hands of the enemy. Seven
days after this, on the 26th of May,
Lieut. Gen. Kirby Smith surrend
ered the trans-Mississippi Depart
ment, and three days thereafter, on
the 29th, President Johnson offici
cially announced, by proclamation
the termination of the war. Thus,
after a little more than four years
duration, had ended a war which,
in many respects, was the most for
midable, as well as the most lamen
table in the history of the human
race. It was not exactly Greek
against Greek, but Americans
against Americans, and >vas waged
solely, as was asserted upon one
side, for the maintenance of the
anion, and npon^the other, for the
inestimable right of state and in
dividnal sovereignty and local self-
governmeDt, by the states respect
ively.
The union, as a result, remains
imact, and the result of a war prov--
ed its indestructibility, bat what
about the other? How many of the
states, and which of them exercise
individual sovereignty and local
self-government in the true mean
ing of that term?

Golden Text—“1 am the Bread
of Life.” —John 6: 35.
Those were busy days which the
Healer and His party spent. His
twelve followers had returned
from their ciicnit of healing and
preaching, and there was much to
tell Jesns of what they bad done.
He called them away into the des
ert to rest, for so many people were
coming and going that they had no
time even to eat.
So they got aboat ready quickly,
and went away secretly, bat the
people saw them going and ran
out of the cities to follow them.
And so Jeans and His disciples
conld not have the qaiet time that
that they needed, for when they
came to the desert place across the
lake of Galilee, a great crowd had
already collected to hear Him.
When He saw the multitude, He
was moved with compassion for
they were aB sheep without a shep
herd, and He tanght them and
healed their sick. He was a good
Shepherd, who has prepared the
good fold for all who will believe
in Him, and He told them many
things abont His love and care.
When evening came His disciples
asked Him to send' the multitude
away, bat Jesas said to feed them.
Andrew said there was a lad pres
ent who had five loaves and two
small fishes, but what were they
among so many people?
Jesus said,“Make the men sit
down.” And when they had sat
down on the grass, He took the
loaves and gave thanks, and the
disciples distributed them to the
hungry people. Imagine their
wonder as the bread ^as only
enough for five persons was hand
ed to those five thousand men, be
sides women and childred; and
when they had eaten heartily there
was enough left to fill twelve bas
kets.
The multitude was very much
excited abont this wonderful mira
cle and said, “This is of a truth
that Prophet that should come in
to the world.” They began to
talk abont making Him king in
stead of cruel Herod, but when
Jesas saw it He persuaded His dis
ciples to cross the lake, while He
sent the multitude away: then He
went alone into a mountain to
pray. When a storm arose on the
lake and the disciples were in dan
ger of being drowned, He came to
them walking on the boisterous
waves in the night, and Peter get
ting permission walked on the wa
ter to meet Him. Bat as Peter
began to sink, he cried oat in ter-
ros “Lord save me,” and immedi
ately Jesus put oat His hand and
canght him. Then Jeans quieted
the storm and the waves.
And those who were in the boat
came and worshiped Him, saying,
Of a truth Thou art the Son of
God.” The next day the people
came across the lake to see Him
again, and reminding them of the
bread which He bad given them,
He said, “He that befieveth on Me
hath everlasting life ... I am the
living bread which came down
from Heaven; if any man eafc of
tnis bread, he shall live forever.’
