fHmr Captivity. !
Ezra. 1: L-IL
Golden Text—“The Lord hath
done grewt rhfnprw for as;, whsrsaf
we are glad.” Psalm. 126 : 3.
“ When the Lord turned again,
the captivity of Zion, we ware like
them that dream. Then was one
month, filled with, laughter, and our
tongue with singing: then said they
among the heathen, the lad hath
done great things for them.”
We Gentiles can never under
stand the depth of these words.
Captives only can know their foil
meaning. Only Jews can know
their pathos They only who have
been so loug crushed and despised
and cast down but not destroyed,
can still sing, rejoicing in hope.
“Tarn again oar captivity, O Lord,
as the streams in the south.” And
their Messiah has sworn that tie
will do it.
About 2500 years ago, some 50,-
000 Jews returned from Babylon,
where they had been captive for
fifty years; It was long before
that the prophets had given Je
hovah's praclamation of full restor
ation of the whole house of Israel,
never more to be taken from their
own land; an 1 doubtless their
month was now filled with, laughter
and their tongue with singing in
foil assurance or the promised good
time. But their return was only
partial; there was no Son of David
on the throne, and no snch glory
as had been proclaimed, and sub
jection of the world to them, aa
had been absolutely promised by
their Messiah.
“The Lord stirred up the spirit
of Cyrus, king of Persia, that he
made a proclamation throughout
all his kingdom, and pat it also in
writing, saving: The Lord God of
Heaven hath given me all the king
dams af the earth, and hath char
ged me to bnild Him an house at
Jerusalem.” And Cyrus command
ed the Lard’s people to help with
silver and gold and goods and
beasts, beside freewill offerings.
And he brought the vessels of gold
and silver, five thousand and four
hundred, that Nebnchadnezzer had
taken from the house of the Lord
in Jerusalem. And the children of
the province that went np ant of
the captivity, came again with Ze
rnbbabel anto Jerusalem and Jn
dah, every one unto his city, with
singing men and singing women;
and all Israel dwelt in their cities.
Bat this restoration was very
short, and for two thousand years
the Jew has be?n a by-word and a
hissing as the Lord declared! Bat

ver, they will enter upon a new am
in their praspsity. 3d longer;
with refrigerator cars at command,
is there any risk in slaughtering
cattle in Hie Sooth to be shipped
to all parts af the country, as is
now the case with the bsef from
TTanpng City and Chicago. Beef
cattle may be raised fully 26 per
cent, cheaper in the Sooth than in
the Northern states. It will require
tan men to a herd of cattle in the
Northwest during the stress of
winter when one man would only
be required in the Southern states
The mod: profitable methods
which coaid be employed in the
South would be for every former to
carry a few well bred cattTe an his
form for milk, batter andbeef. The
steers should be fattened for the
market at the age of three or four
years: An average of four well fat
tened beeves sold each year from
every form, with 100 acres in cnlti
vation, would be a so arse of im
mense income to the people of the
Southern states, besides adding to
the fertility of the soil and making
tbe people independent of oatside
supplies. There is no good reason
why snch a coarse should not be
entered apon at once by the form
ers and planters of the Southern
states. Wild graces and forage
crops enough in the Sooth spring
op and blossom, fell and decay,
which, if converted into beef, would
add millions of dollars to the wealth
of the country. The wasted vege
table resources of the South should
be converted into tangible wealth,
and this may be done with a maxi
mum profit by the raising of cat-
tie, for the cattle next to bread
stuffs, are most universally in de
mand at good prices. Sever before
was the demand for good breeding
stock better than it is now. Raise
good stock, and the profits will be
certain and satisfactory.
In this connection we are pleased
to note that Mr. T. J. Dykes, who
resides a few miles south of town,
is going to engage in stock and
pool try raising on an extensive
scale. Only the past week ha has
received a very fine Berkshi re hog
and a coop of Plymouth Rock and
Wyandotte chickens to add to his
form. The example set by Mr.
Dykesshonld be followed by our
other farmers. It is a profitable
field.
