Encouraging the Builders, —
Haggai 2:1 9. Read chapters 1 and
2.
Golden Text—“B9 strong, all ye
people of the land, saith the Lord,
and work; for I am with yon.”
Haggai 2:4.
The temple of Jehovah was de
stroyed, and He spoke through the
prophet Raggai, saying, “Is it time
for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceil
ed houses, and this house lie waste?
Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Con
sider your ways. Go up to the
mountain, and bring wood, and
bnild the house; and I will take
pleasure in it, and I will be glori
fied, saith Jehovah.”
“The Lord shall also roar out of
Zion, and utter His voice from Je
rusalem; and the heavens and the
earth shall shake; but the Lord
will be the hope of His people, and
the strength of the children of Is
rael. So shall ye know that I am
the Lord your God dwelling iu
Zion, My holy mountain. But Ju
dah shall dwell forever, and Jeru-
salem from generation to genera
tion. For I will cleanse their blood
that I have not cleansed: for Jeho-
vah dwelleth in Zion.”
“For the nation and kingdom
that will not serve theeshall perish;
yen, those nations shall ba utterly
wasted. The sons also of them that
The Soil Was R’cli. 1-
From The Cincinnati Enquirer.
The other day a loose jointed
stranger from Saake B ittom3 saun
tered into Mr. Stowe’s store, and
with imperturbable equanimity
placed his gaunt frame on a chair
and complacently deposited an im
mense spot of amber within six iu-
ches of the spitbox.
Ferdinand Augustas Rai'nseed,
who helps keep store, immediately
accosted him with the time-honor
ed but eloquently inquiry, “How’s
craps?”
“Patty fa’r,” replied the grang
er, “putty fa’r, even fer Snake B it-
toms; an’ I do ’low thet we kin raise
’bout-’z much tab th’ acre ’z moa’
folks.”
“Land’s pretty rich down there,
ain’t it? ’ asked Ferd.
“Rich!Bless my biles, stranger,
but th’ ain’t no richer!”
“How many onions to the bash-
el, for instance?”
•‘lagans! To ih’ bashel! Why,
stranger, 61’ Squire Razen had to
chop one ingnn into six pieces ’fo’
he cud load it on a. four hos’ wag-
gin!”
“Ah-h-h!” gasped Ferd, for this
waB a little sudden, even for his
elastic imagination. “And how
about potatoes, now?”
“Taters? Waal, taters is putty
good, too. Thar was Bill Longbo

unto thee; and all they that des
pised thee shall bow themselves
down at the soles of thy feet; and
they shall call thee the city of the
Lord, The Zion of the Holy One
of Israel—and thou shalt know that
I, Jehovah, am thy Saviour and
thy Redeemer, the mighty One of
Jacob. But \e shall be named the.
Priests of the Lord: men shall call
you the Ministers of oar God.”
“For thus saith the Lord of
hosts: Yet once, it is a little while,
and I will shake the heavens, and
the earth, and the sea, and the dry
land;*and I will shake all nations,
and the desire of all nations shall
come: and I will fill this house with
glory, saith the Lord of hosts. The
silver is Mine, and the gold is
Mine, saith the Lord of hosts.”
As Jehovah spoke all this, of
coarse it will literally come to pass
for His people, the Jews, who are
now despised. We Gentiles must
take heed and consider our ways,
for Jehovah also said of the Jews,
“He that toncheth you toucheth
the apple of His eye.” We also are
builders of temples: “Know ye not
that your body is the temple of the
Holy Ghost, which is in you.” Je
hovah has declared to us Gentiles
in this generation, that we are
building on a sure foundation;
many builders, with different ma
terials, different structores, but all
for the same purpose—His temple.
And there will be a test of these
structures. “For every man’s work
shall be made manifest: for the day
shall declare it, because it shall be
revealed by fi:e; and the fire shall
try every man’s work of what sort
it is.” And this is the encourage
ment of every bnilder on this sure
foundation, who builds good or bad.
“If any man’s work abide which he
hath built therenpon/he shall re
ceive a reward. If any man’s work
shall be barned, he shall suffer
lose: bnt he himself shall be saved;
yet so as through fire.”
“For other foundation can no
man lay than that is laid, which is
Jesns Christ.” “Neither is there
salvation in any other: for there is
none other name under heaven giv
en among meD, whereby we must
be saved.”

“Much of a fruit crop?” pursued
Ferd.,
“Right smart, sorter. Beteher

“Great Scott! Didn’t he save it?"
askpd the amazed Ferdinand.
“Wall, yes, he’s a savin’ it yit, I
reckon. Leas’ wise he hollered oat
some punkins an’ set ’em where th’
brandy could ruu intuh ’em about
two weeks ago. Bat they wasn’t
full when I left,” said the granger.
“Must have been powerful big
pumpkins,” observed Ferd,
“Putty sizble. Had tub pull ’em

“How’s stock?” inquired Ferd.
“Now yer talkin’, stranger! We’ve
got stock that’ll eat up them pump

calves come’s big’s yearlin’s, an’ it
takes a steer’s hide tuh make a hal

T’other day my youngsters was
haulin’ np wood with two red ants
yoked to th’ kyart. Ob, I tell yah,
we’ve got some' rich country! Why,
there was Lige Passit bailt a one-
story house, an’ th’ next week it
had growed intuh a three story
mansion with a coopilow on top!
Even his chicken house had sprout
ed dormer windows an’ a front
porch! Ob, yes, we’ve got some rich
land—mighty rich!”
And the stone jawed stranger
from Snake Bottoms expetcorated
another flood around the outside
of the ashbox, while the demented
Rainseed tried to put the stove, in
his pocket and climb through the
skylight.

A Florida Farmer’s Ways.
A market gardener within five
miles of Duval’s court house boast
ed that he supported his family
well on two acres of Florida sand,
which had yielded him three crops
during the present season and
would give him five before Christ
mas. This interested us and we
went to see. We saw his fields, we
inspected his books, and we have
every reason to believe that his
boast was strictly borne out by the
facts.
But he claimed that oats were
high and bis horse cost him too
much. In amazement we aBked
him what did he care for the price
of Western oats and began inves
tigation on a new line: We found
that the ears of green corn discard
ed from his market wagon were
thrown npon the mannre heap
that the stalks were thrown over
the fence for his neighbor’s hogs,
and the odds and ends of his farm
never utilized.
The refuse of his two acres should
feed abundantly a horse and a cow,
from which he should get fertilizers
that would richly repay all expense
of care and handling; he should
keep half a dozen pigs and have
some ducks always ready for mar
ket; chickens and eggswqre always
in demand by his customers, and
still he had none for sale. The
man valued his two acres of Florida
sand at a thonsand dollars, and yet
he went to the West or East every
week of his life.
He lost half of his possible pro
fits for laok of a little thought; he
never looked for anything that was
not the product of hard work, and
he paid others to think for him.
Onr lecture may have been worth
something to that man, or he may
continue on the same road but we
shall continue to lecture whether
there is any one to listen or not.
The Floridian to day with all his
virtues, is the most wasteful man
on the face of the earth, and he will
not be rich till be mends his ways.
