Written for the Home Joubxal.
“Oh! the key to thy casket, mother,
The angel-of death .hath found;
A gem he hath taken- from thee
To place in thy Master’s crown.”
On the 4th of August the angel
of death entered the home of Mr.
and Mrs. John Wasner and bore
across the dark and- mystic river
the loved form of their eldest
daughter, Johnnie. For four long,
weary .weeks the battle for life-was
fought with scarcely unabating
strength. But gradually the pow
ers of the earth-life gave over the
fight, and the soul, stepping out
from its house of clay, sailed away
over the crystal sea to its home of
immortality. We know that the
old must die, but when the young
and the beautiful, the pride and
joy of the home, are cut down like
the untimely flower we, with eyes
blinded with teats and hearts
breaking with sorrow, sit and
grieve, and wonder at the inscru
table ways of an Allwise Provi
dence.
Standing on the threshold of
womanhood, the future seemed
indeed a summer-land of promise
sweet. Beautiful in person and
fiifted with a mind ambitions for
success, she allowed no obstacle
to shut out from her grasp the
priceless blessing of a good educa
tion—and intermingled with it all
was a heart at peace with its God,
And the hearts of the parents love
to linger with fondest recollec
tions of the hours spent at the or
gan as she sang softly alone:
“All for Jesus, all for Josub,
All my being’s ransomed powers,
All my thoughts and words and doings,
All my days and all my hours.”
It was the prayer of the heart—
“the soul in its earliest love”—
singing itself away to the home
above.
‘All for Jesus, all for Jesus,
Besting now beneath His wings.”
May God sanctify this great sor
row and shadow of affliction to the
souls of all her loved ones, is the
wish of A Friend.
Oldest Church in Georgia.
The old Midway church, in Lib
erty county, Ga., still L standing,
had for its pastor between 1785
and 1791 Du. Abiel Holmes, the
father of Oliver Wendell Holmes;
and when Precident Washington
paid his celebrated visit to Geor
gia in 1790, Dr. Holmes was made
chairman of the committee ap
pointed by the congregation of
the Old Midway church to greet
him. “Dr. Joseph LeConte, pro
fessor of chemistry in the Univer
sity of California,” says a corres
pondent of the Boston Transcript,
“is one of the products of Old
Midway church. So also is United
States Senator A. O. Bacon, and
many people will be surpsised to
know that Governor Theodore
Roosevelt, of New York, is also of
this same stock, deriving his con
nection with old. Midway church
through his mother, who was born
in Liberty county, and- whose pro
genitors were p.sominent and in
fluential members of the church.”
Of our total exports last year,
valued.at$1,894,186,375, Europe
an countries, over which our flag
does not fly, took more than $1,-
000,000,000 worth, while South
America and our . new possessions
took a fraction thereof so small as
to he an almost negligible quanti
ty. The statistics of our foreign
commerce, taken as a whole, are
the; indisputable indices of pros
perity. And for that, prosperity
the nation is not indebted to any
political party, but to the natural
growth and’ development of its
own splendid resources and to the
needs of foreigu peoples who have
the wherewithal “to buy from us.—

The Bravery of Woman
was grandly shown by Mrs. John
Dowling, of Butler, Pa., in a three
years’ struggle with a malignant
stomach trouble that caused dis
tressing attacks of nausea and in
digestion. All remedies failed to
relievo her until she tried Electric
Bitters. After taking it two
months, she wrote: “I am now
whoUy cured and can eat any
thing. It is truly a grand tonic
for. the whole system, as I gained
in weight and feel much stronger
since using it.” . It aids digestion,
cures dyspepsia, improves appe

Mr. Bryan’s Great Speec h.
Mr. Bryan’s speech of accept
ance at Indianapolis is without
doubt the political eyent'of para
mount importance in the present
campaign. Mr-. Bryan received at
the hands of the Democratic party
the nomination for th'e presidency.
A partisan utterance upon this oc
casion would have been pardoned,
nay, more, was even expected by
the country at large. Tradition
and precedent exist to justify
canidate in such a course. He of
Canton—MarkHanna’s man—who
was recetly notified of a nomina
tion, took occasion to plead for
the principals of a party and in
the cause of an administration.
In multifarious terms he told what
“we” had done, and fairly reveled
in the deeds of “us.” The Re
publican party was defended—ev
en apologizeed for. And William
McKinley accepted at the hands
of those who bore the Btamp of
the Republican party the nomina
tion for the presidency of the Uni
ted States. Mr.McKihley’s speech
acceptance wiU go down in history
as the statement of a party fol
lower. But how ^different is the
tone and tenor of Mr. Bryan’s In
dianapolis address. McKinley
spoke to a party-—Bryan to|a na
tion ; McKinley pleaded the cause
of an administration—Bryan the
cause of a people. McKinley de
fended the principles of a party—
Bryan spoke in defense of the
principals that are at the founda
tion of free government; McKin
ley spoke as a canidate, but Bryan
spoke as an American citizen.
In the face of existing circum
stances it is a fact of peculiar sig
nificance that Mr. Bryan could re
ply tp the notification committee
in a speech bearing as little trace
of partisan politics as the consti
tution of the United States or the
Declaration of Independence.
This Jdoes not indicate that Mr.
Bryan is not a good Democrat, but
rather that the democraticjparty is
contending not so much for certain
theories of administration in a
free government asfor free govern-
hient itself. Hence it is that,
fighting for the very existence of
the republic, the position of the
patriotic citizen who stands for
free government and the position
of the Democratic party become
identical.—Ex

The community of Neodosha,
Kan., a town of about 1,500 in
habitants, claims a rather unique
distinction. The majority of the
people there are thin in flesh, and
many of the men and women
weigh less than 100 pounds each.
The Neodosha Sun claims that if
all the people of that community
were stood up in line and dressed
only in Indian attire, they would
make a picture equal to the repre
sentations of starving India. Phy
sicians claim that the great bo
dies of natural gas and oil under
the town are nature’s anti-fat
remedy.
In spite of repeated urgings from
their pastor, Bonie female mem
bers of the Methodist Episcopal
Church at Knightstown, Ind., re
fused to remove their hats during
services. Then he directed that
those who. persisted - in wearing
their headgear must occupy reserv
ed pews in the “amen corner.”
Now these pews have regular occu
pants and there is a prospect that
they will increase in numbers, for
most of "the women want to wear
their hats, although manyj yielded
to the pastor’s wish.
Blakley Reporter _
The following was penned by a
nlan of good authority in the line
on whioh he writes. ~ “There is no
legitimate argument in favor of
7c. cotton, and the only reason
why the price is being depressed
is becanse the speculators antici
pate the rush of our crop on the
market and letting the buyers
take the staple at whatever figure
they deemjeonvenient. The pro
ducers have the opportunity of
their lives to manage the present
cropjon terms satisfactory to them
selves. The world is short of raw
cotton, and the mills in this coun
try and in Europe most depend
absolutely upon the cotton now
growing in the fields to keep their
spindles moving. The world has
consumed more than eleven mill
ions hales of American cotton in
the last twelve months, and there
is at this time no surplus to be
carried over. It is generally con
ceded thar we cannot now produce
but a little^over ten miUion bales
from the present crop, which will
reduce the supply for the next ten
months a million and a halfbales
The increased demand for Ameri
can cotton is]at present about 250,
000 bales per annum, so that we
will fall short of supplying actual
demands for the coming'year.
To Acquire a Good Vocabulary
“A good vocabulary is aebuired
by reading good books, as well as
by hearingthe talk of those who
express thenlselves in the speech
of educated people,” writes Mar
garet E. Sangster, in the Septem
ber Ladies’ Home Journal.
“Thought lies back of speech, and
the more subjects interest us the
more command of language we
shall have in which to describe
them. They who read scientific
books will have grasp of scientific
terms. They who descriminate
nicely and use the very best word
to say what they have in their,
minds will consult a dictionary
and see the similarities or the
' contrasts of certain words; will
choose,as among gems, the flawless
ruby or crystal; will not he satie-
fied except with the exact words
which can express precisely the
meaning they wish to convey. The
reading of good authors lifts our
vocabulary from meanness and
meagerness to nobility and splen
dor, enriches our speech with
words which are like a beautiful
embroidery on the garment of dai
ly life, and furnishes us with al
lusions, quotations and phrases
which are picturesque, apposite
or convenient for illustration.”

the greatest ever harvested. The
estimate places the yield at 2,400,

For several years J. H. Rickel
has kept his two wives in his little
carriage shop at Chanute, Kan.,
and the women' have never spoken
to each other, yet no-jealously ex
ists between them.
The reason for this is that the
first wife, who died in Dakota bad
lands tweny-five years ago, is' pet
rified, and is securely packed in'a«
wooden box.
The living wife is her husband’s
constant companion and helps
him in the shop, besides doing her
housework.
When. Rickel moved from Dako
ta, several years ago, he exhumed
the'body of wife No. 1 and fouud
it to he petrified. He says it seems
only natural that he should want
her body as near him as possible.
He adds that it is the only thor
ough case of petrification of a hu
man body in the United States.
The form is perfect and the fea
tures of the face almost life-like
