July 19, 1900. | do not feel very much like writing this morning, nevertheless, I will try and write a few lines. The rainy season is holding off longer than ever before within the memory of the oldest inhabitant, and it will cause much suffering among the natives. We have a shower, or what at hoine would be balled a good rain, every day, but at this time of year it should.be raining, 'nearly all the time. At present the country is in a deplorable condition, owing to a flight of locusts.. There is hardly a field of rice or corn in this whole province which • has i npt suffered greatly from this pest. ’ T&e na- t-i,.* iu: ite? claim that this ssthe worst it. fOr 17 aEggjSi 7 years, and say many people Avil} die of-starvation -nfext year, owing to the entire crops be? ing devastated. The locusts were’ actually so thick that it was im possible to seethe woods 200 yards from our quarters. There wks a large field of. cqeh between otir quarters and the woods, and now nothing bqt the stalks remain. ' Rumora reacheihere yesterday that the French had been repulsed by the Chinos at some place, un known to us, and that next day the English and Americans drove the Chinos out. Hope it is true. It is furthur rumored that the 18th, 2nd battalion, are booked for China in the near future. If this be true, I trust that we will give a good account-of ourselves. I do not suppose you hear much of the. 18th, as we have not had any fierce fighting, and the truth of the matter is this: The insur gents fear the 18th, and as much as possible they avoid coming in contact with us. On the other hand, they harass the 19th, 26th and'44th a large part of the time. They have also attacked Calios, where the 6th is garrisoned, but were repulsed. If we stay here the rainy season, I do hot antici pate any trouble from them. As long, as I am over here, it would suit me exactly to be sent to China. Regards to inquiring friends, Large mail enroute from Iloilo MOSSY HILL NOTES. BY SOCKS. Mossy Hill is on a great b boom. In Memorials. Written for the Home Joobxli.. On the night of August 29th Farmers are getting out the fleecy j God, in His allwise providence, staple and making hay \|hile the saw fit to remove from the Meth- sun shines, and the coons are hav- odist church at Henderson. our ing mullet Buppers and otherwise beloved friend and sister seeing the best part of life. The crops will he short, but the price is tickling the natives con siderably. We hear a great many side re marks about the present price of cotton turning the farmeifi’ heads and causing them to sacrifice their prospects' by.planting all- cotton. Sifch rot is an insult to the intel- genf-farmers of the country. Look back at the past and see who did it. It was not the farmers. Why, a few years ago the most Worthless negro had only to get tip a basket of shucks and make application to some merchant for a $200 mule. He didn’t only get the mu|e, but the fat of the land, and finally the merchant, too. But we do not expect a repetition of such affairs, for the merchant and the farmer have learned that their, interests re identical, and will pull to gether. No better proof of this could be pointed out than the pledges made the farmers by the banks and warehousemen to aid them in not forcing the cotton crop on the market in 90 days, as has heretofore been the rule. Republicans Proud of Pension List. A Republican campaign docu- moni points out that during the administration of McKinley a to tal of $421,000,000 has been paid out for pensions; that last year the pension payments amounted to 24 per cent, of the total reve nues of the government, and that 52 per cent, of the pension appli cations under McKinley have been allowed, while under Cleveland the percentage allowed was 31^. In other words,’the Republicans are pluming themselves upon hav ing instituted a wild riot of pen sion grabbing and treasuryjraiding, The document is likely to make Democratic votes. The people desire a party in power that will take pride in pro tecting the treasury, not in loot ing it.—Ex. The Bravery of Woman was grandly shown by. Mrs. John Dowling, of Butler, Pa., ih a three years’ struggle with a m'alignant stomach trouble that caused dis tressing attacks of nausea and in digestion. All remedies fdflefl to relieve her until she tried Electric Bitters. After, taking it two ko wrAlh a -rv months, she wrote ‘‘I am now wholly cured’ and cam eat any thing..* It is truly a grand tonic for the whole system, as I gained in weight and feel much stronger since using it.” It aids digestion, cures dyspepsia, "improves appe tite, gives new life. They will still con tinue to sow oats and wheat, plant corn and raise meat. Why, in discussing the matter with one of our best farmers a few days since, he declared he would plant less cotton another year, for he said this crop would pay him out of debt, and he could turn his atten tion to more agreeable life. That labor was too scarce and inferior to worry over cotton, when he could make grain, meat, etc., at so much less risk and with so much more pleasure. We are proud of Mr. Joe Q. El lis’ corn crop. We have known 59 bushels per acre on Mossy Hill. The test .before the last'wheat convention showed what could be done with wheat. The cr^ once was that we couldn’t get good flour from our wheat, but that will not go now, for w6 have pat ent rollermills all over the coun try now that make as good flour as can be made. Her heart was always full of love and sympathy, for mankind. Manj fevered* brow felt the soothing touch of her gentle hand; and many rising tear- drops sank back to their calmed fountain at the voice of her tender. sympathy. We feel that her life in this com munity has certainly been a ben ediction. For a number of years she was a member of the Methodist church —a- generoue, liberal, whole-soul ed Christian. We deem it our Christian privilege to offer, as a token of our love, the following resolutions: Resolved 1st. That in the death of our sister, while we miss her sadly in the church and Sunday school, we bow in submission to the will of Him Who doeth all things well. Resolved 2nd. That we tender our sympathy to the bereaved ones, praying our Heavenly Fath er to comfort them in their sor row. Resolved 3rd. That our church has lost one of its most beloved members; that we will-strive to emulate her life and will ever cherish her memory as the fra grance of sweet flowers. Mrs, R. M. Davis, Mrs. J. W. Ragan, Mrs. J. W. Hodge, Mr. J. W. Wimberly. Seldom has anyone shown such presence of mind as was exhibited by William T. McCracken, who was fatally injured While repair ing a broken telephone wire in Kansas City. In some way the line became crossed and McCrack en fell writhing to the sidewalk. “Don’t toiich me,” he cried to a bystander who hurried up, “you’ll be killed if you do. Get a dry board and stand on it and wrap your hands in a felt hat, then you can get the wire off without hurt ing yourself.” The man dashed off in search of the board, but be fore he came hack McCracken was dead, the wife still grasped in his qharred hands. w. A most singular, a most pathet ic and a most loyal state of affairs exists in Maine. Congressman Boutelle, a member of congress for twenty years, is in a lunatic asylum, and his case is deemed hopeless. Despite this, his loyal friends, insisting that should he recover and find another man in his seat in congress the result would be disastrous, the republi can convention renominated him and he will probably be re-elected, as his district has a safe republi can majority of over ten thousand. There has been no higher evidence of loyalty in politics than this.— Exchange. The Philadelphia Record says that if President McKinley had ended his letter of acceptance with the first sentence he would have done better.
