our safety is trusted to the men on

We left Gapiz Jan. 2nd and marched
to this place, and Co. B went to
Dumarao, which is the town that
commands the entrance or pass into
and over the mountains on this side,
and Passi occupies a similar position
on the other side, so that we hav e a
chain of towns garrisoned clear
across the island from Hoilo to Ca
piz, viz: Iloilo, Jaro, Pavia, Santa,
Barbara, Maasin, Pototan, Dingle,
Passi, Dumarao, Dao and Capiz.
Besides these garrisons, we have
troops at five or six different places
on the island; also a detachment at
Bhomblou. The signal corps have
got the telegraph line working from
Iloilo to Passi, and from Capiz to
Dumarao. They will cross the moun
tains this week, and then we will be
in direct communication with De
partment Headquarters at Iloilo.
It being an impossibility to send
supplies to us by land, on account of
bad roads and no bridges, every
thing has to come by water in ca
noes, which are made in this man
ner: Two long canoes hollowed out
of treess are joined together and
covered with Nipa leaves. These
boats are propelled by “poling.” Six
natives to the canoe put their long
bamboo poles to the bottom of the'
river and walk from bow to stem—
this is the motive power.- A guard
is on each boat, and it is very sel
dom that they make a trip without
being fired upon from ambush. On
Jan. 11th, as they were passing be
tween two high bluffs, they were
fired upon and 'John H. Denny was
killed. Although we had but seven
rifles on the boat, and the enemy
were hid in the high rushes and
weeds on the bluff, our boys put
them to flight in about 20 minutes.
Casualties, Co. K, 1 killed; natives, 2
killed and 5 wounded. The insur
gents cannot stand fire. If we could
get them in some open place where
they would have to fight, we could
quell the insurrection on this island
in one fight. Private Denny’s death
was a sad one, and appealed partic
ularly to those of ns in whom he had
confided. He was a Princeton grad
uate, and his brotner is a professor
in Vanderbilt University. Drink got
the best of him, and he enlisted to
get away from temptation. He was
left at Capiz sick.when we came to
Dao, and was. on his wav to join his
company when killed. He was shot
almost in center of top of left shoul
der and the ball came out on sight
side of right hip, passing through
the whole length of his body diago
nally. He lived one hour, but suf
fered no pain, and was conseious to
the end. I helped prepare, him for
burial; he was buried in my clothes.
On the night of the 14th, or rath
er at 12:30 a. m. of the morning of
the 16th, we made a forced march
of 16 miles in order to strike the en
emy at daybreak. But they got
wind of it and left the town 2 hours
prior to onr arrival. We followed
them for ~ 20 miles but could not
catch them, so we returned to Dao.
Our rations for 3 days, and a 72-
mile “hike,” were 6 biscuit—we
were gone 4 days. Perhaps eggs,
chickens, etc., are not scarce articles
in that section of the island. Talk
about hustling for grub! Turn 100
men loose 36 miles from home, and
nothing to eat but what each man
can find for himself. We found
quite a. lot of supplies, mainly rice.
We have—that is, the-natives—
about six or seven deaths per day in
town from smallpox. Soldiers do
not pay any attention to it, and it
does seem as if we are immune, or
perhaps it is vaccination.
Guess we will be here for the
month of- February if not longer.
Manage to get 2 nights in bed ev
ery third guard. ' 7'
A runner came in about 8 p. m.
Jan. 18th, and reported a large body
of insurgents between Paintan and
Dao, coming this way, and-although
we had not been back from our trip
over 2 hours, I had to take 6 men
and go out about 1 mile from here
and establish an outpost.. All the
orders you ever get are, “take so
many men and establish an outpost'
at any point yon see fit, in such a
direction, and . not nearer than one
mile (more or less) from quarters.”
The non-commissioned officer in
.charge of the men is responsible for
location, alarm, etc. Luckily for
them, and possibly for us, they did
not come near us. I suppose, they
thought they could come into the
town before we returned from our
trip, but they got left.
I was put under the painful ne
cessity of arresting one of my men
the other night for being drunk on
guard—a most serious offense. I
will probably have to go to Capiz in
a few days to appear as a witness
against him. I can see nothing for
him but dishonorable discharge and
two years at hard labor in the mili
tary prison at Iloilo. Drinking does
not “go” in this' company. Capt.
Lewis has issued orders as follows:
“If any non-commissioned officer

Want American-Shoes.
A man carrying a dress suit case
plastered all over with foreign la
bels and wearing a suit of tweed
that fitted him like a gunny sack,
rushed into a store near Broad
street station and called for a pair
of American shoes. “I’ve been
abroad for two years,” he remarked
as he kicked off a pair of thick-soled,
shapeless looking shoes about three
sizes too large for his' feet, “and I’ve
landed—just got into New York
this morning, and hurried right over
cm the first train. I want a pair of
shoes that will fit me comfortably,
and yet look like something.” He
got them and went out vastly
pleased. “That’s nothing unusual,”
remarked the proprietor after he
had gone. “They do not know how
to make shoes on the other side.”—

According to the postal receipts
of the fifty largest cities in the coun
try, Boston makes the remarkable
average of a trifle less than $6 to
each inhabitant, showing that either
a vast amount of business is done in
Boston by -mail, or else the social
correspondence is-much heavier than
elsewhere. Boston, with 100,000 less
than half as many inhabitants as
Philadelphia, shows postal receipts
only $211,000 less than the latter.
Boston’s receipts are $1,200,000
more than St. Louis, although the
latter city is larger bj 15,000.

himself thus • unexpectedly confronted
by an audience, he was covered with

A titter that ran through the au
