Here is something to think over: The leaf tobacco exhibit of the United States was by far the lar gest, most complete and most at tractive exhibit of the kind at the Paris exposition, and it was pro nounced by many persons compe tent to judge to be the finest ex hibit ever made. The exhibit con sisted of about 2,000®samples, rep resenting every type and grade of tobacco produced in the United States; It took the grand prize, nine gold medals, five silver med als * and honorable mention for many of thg exhibitors. Two sig nificant facts were brought out in the jury of awards. The Florida- grown Sumatra leaf was found to require twenty-five more leaves to the pound of a givCn grade than the samples exhibited from the is land of Sumatra. It received twenty points of excellenc against eighteen for the Sumatra, and was pronounced by the jury to be per fect.- The bright yellow tobacco of Virginia and North Carolina was awarded eighteen points out of apossible twenty, or the same as given to the Turkish tobacco, which it resembles in many points and with which it most closely competes. Many very strong let ters have been received, showing the appreciation of the growers and leaf dealers of this conntry in the work the department of ag riculture did for the tobacco in terest, and much verbal praise was given by the jury of awards and by visitors to the exposition. It is believed that this exhibit has done much for the tobacco inter est of this country in showing for eigners the great variety of tobac co grown here and the excellence of the different types and grades. How Can They Tell? There are-three distracted moth ers in Binghamton, N. Y., and a father who maliciously laughs in his sieve, but who is directly af- bected. Mrs. William Roberson recent ly becafne the mother of a bounc ing boy. As a coincidence a sister and a cousin were visited by the traditional stork about the same time. Mrs. Robinson conceived the idea of playing, a joke on her husband, who was away on a bus iness trip, and surprising him with triplets on Bis return home. The other mothers were consult ed and fell in with the plan. The babies were all dressed alike and when the happy father arrived he was ushered in to see his thriv ing family. To say he was aston ished only. faintly exprsesses it. He, however, survived the shock, and when the nurse went to sor- out the babies she was first puzt zled, then dismayed, for she could- not tell them apart. The moth ers were in a like fix. Then the joke leaked out, and Robinson be came hilarious. Not' only the fact that his family had been ma terially reduced but that bis wife did not know her own baby, he de dared, more than evened things for the fright they had given to him. Now the mothers are puzzling their brains for some method of telling which is which. What a Wife Earns. OLD SCHOOL BOOKS Beagfjt, Seld agd Exchanged, Full Line Houston County Books. The latest Russian crop figures made public estimate the winter wheat harvest of the country, in cluding Siberia and Central Asia, at 134,580,000 bushels. The win ter wheat raised in the same terri tory in 1898 was 153,698,400 bush els. The deficiency means, of course, that American wheat will continue in good demand during the next year. Just how Presi dent McKinley arranged this de ficiency of the Russian crop is not quite dear, but he did it, of course. The, .Maseachnsetts death roll for 1886 includes the names of tventy-one persons who had lived to the age of 100 years or more. Sixteen' of the number were wo men; and three of them had nevef been married. Eight of the twen ty-one . were born in Ireland, three in Canada and three in oth er foreign countries, leaving seven who were native born: Six of these seven were natives of Massa chusetts. The oldest was 106 years-and two months of age. —-—<oe -e» A Georgia newspaper gives this advice to the farmers: ’’Get your wheat in the ground and get in shape to live, good times or bad times. The wide-awake farmer who makes his flour, meat, syrup and potatoes never knows when hard times come. If meat goes high, he has it to sell instead of buy, if flour goes itp he is all.right, not caring which way the wind blows.” A Keen Clear Brain. Pension Commissioner Evans reports that 34,000 applications of pensions on account of the war with Spain have already come in and the Pittsburg Dispatch figures it out that this number equals the whole number of men we had in the field in that war. Shatter took 14.000 to Santiago, and the rein forcements brought the number sent there to 20,000. Gen. Miles took 6,000 to Porto Rico, where there was no flighting; and most of them soon returned. Merritt took 11,000 or 12,000 to Manilla, These are all who went out of the country and into the vacinity of actual war. But there were about 160.000 more who spent more or less time in camps in various parts of the country . The remedy for the pension evil is to prosecute a few pension attorneys. They are the ones that work up -the cases. • We know several soldiers in the Ten nessee regiments that had not reached home before they received letters from pension attorneys, asking permission to file pension claims for them.—Nasbvile Amer- . If the husband were to work alone, it is contend ed, without the aid of the wife’s skill and care in the management of the household, it would require $3,000 to go as far as $1,500 with the wife’s aid. The point is illus trated by the story of a New Jer- fey woman who, after twenty years of married life, received from her husband, after a disa greement, the -suggestion that she go home to her father. Before taking the hint she decided to present her husband with a bill for her services throughout the years she had toiled as his help mate in the home. “She is said to have told him calmly,” the 9tory relates, “that she would not charge him for her faded youth, she would like to - be re-imbursed for the 1040 weeks of household service during their married life of 20 years.” Yalueing her services as cook at $4.per week, as housemaid and waitress at $3 per week, as nurse at S3, seamstress at $3, and as overseeing housekeeper at $5 per &SLuiMiStl®“U h t e im 8 d | No,T is the tlrae to select yonr Holiday, Wedding and she felt entitled to a business set-1 tlement.” Her bill, figured on the basis here given, aggregated! $18,720, and after thinking it | over he decided to let her stay.
