Questions.—1. What is being done
to secure for the farmers' of Georgia
pure bred cattle that have been so thor
oughly acclimatized that they will noi
die prematurely upon the farmers’ hands!
2 Would it not pay sbme enterprising
person or firm to establish a stock farm
and keep pure bred ' cattle that have be
come immune against the diseases tbal

breeders of improved cattle in Georgia!
3. Could not the Prison Commission
do something on this line by purchasing
a herd of. pure bred cattle for the pur
pose of selling them between the ages ol

in Georgia who’will be bound by law to

alone, and in this' state ? y
Answer—1. The Agricultural Depart
ment, in co-operation with Mr. Wade oi
the Southern railway, Mr. Sawtell, Mr,
T. H. Martin, Dr. Hnnnicut and others,
caused to be brought to Atlanta during
the late Interstate Fair more than ICO
Hereford and Shorthorn beef cattle d
from four to 12 months old. Coming
from ah infected section of Texas
they are considered acclimatized and
immune. Some of them were purs
breeds and others from three-fourths ta
seven-eighths pure breed. Judges pro
nounced them as fine beef cattle as wa: d
ever exhibited in a southern state. Prob
ers of Georgia: Ton are hereby notified
and warned hot to accept any trees or
other plants commonly known as nur
sery stock or parts thereof, from the
Cumberland nurseries, otherwise known
as the Grand-View'nurseries, Rose Bank
nurseries and Paragon nurseries, L O.

fused the required official tags of . the
.Georgia State Board of Entomology be
cause of the fact that last season they
shipped nursery stock into the state in
fested with the San Jose scale, the well
known dangerously injurious insect pest
of orchard trees.
“Notwithstanding the laws of Geor
gia to the contrary and the warningtbat
I have given them, the. above named
nursery people have attempted to smug-
gle into the state several large orders’of
trees again this season. I have already
apprehended some of these orders and
upon examination have found the trees
badly infested with the San Jose scale.
They were promptly seized and con
signed to the fire before the agents had
an opportunity to deliver them to the
purchasers.
“I further warn those who may have
already this season received trees from
the said Cumberlandnurseries to destroy
them by fire in order to prevent the
further spread of the San Jose scale,
j with which they are undoubtedly in-
j f ested.
I “I also wish to respectfully request
! the transportation companies, their
agents or employes, to comply with the
rules of the Georgia State Board of En

Answer to 2 and 3. It has been sug
gested by some of our correspondents in
terested in this subject that the legis
lature might well appropriate a reason
able fund and authorize the prison
commission to purchase for the prison
farm near Milledgeville a herd of pure
blood beef cattle, to be sold while be
tween the ages of 2 and 12 months ta
only those persons in the state of Geor
gia who will bind themselves to use such
cattle for breeding purposes alone and
only in this state. We think this a good
suggestion.
Here we would urge that Hereford!
be bred for beef and kept separate from
the Jerseys, which should be reserved
for dairy purposes. It should be remem
bered that the pure dairy strain is far
removed from the pure beef strain.—

WORN OUT LAND.
It Can Be Restored to Fertility by
Judicious Fertilizing.
Question. —What cau be done to re
store my worn out laud?
A gentleman, who removed to Geor
gia from one of the states of the great
west a few years ago, visited Atlanta
during-the Interstate Fair, held in Octo
ber. In speaking of worn out lands he
said that Georgia farmers were not the
only ones Who by an exhaustive system
of cultivation had deprived good lands
of their fertility. When people began
to settle up the western states and found
lands that gave yields of 40 and 50
bushels of wheat to * the acre, they
used the same land year after year with
out returning anything to the soil, with
the result that the yield diminished un
til 6 bushel! to the acre was the best
that coaid be obtained. Some of them
quit farming and began the raising of
blooded oattle for the dairy and for beef,
saving the manure and applying it ta
the land in order to improve the pas
ture grounds. It was soon discovered
that Wherever cattle were kept the land
was being rapidly restored to its origi
nal fertility. Nt>w there is no such
thing as Worn out lands aijiong good
farmers in the west. Skillful fertiliza
tion and rotation df crops keeps the
land productive.
This gentleman purchased a place in
Georgia on which most of the land was
what is called worn out. He went to
work to build it up according to the
methods so often recommended by this
department, viz: judicions fertilizing
with both commercial and homemade
fertilizers, studying the nature of his
soil and trying to supply it with the ele
ments most necessary for its renewal.
Among other things he purchased sev
eral fine Jerseys, which supplied him
with milk and butter not only for home
consumption, hut also for sale. The
droppings from these cows were care
fully collected and applied to the land in
some places alone and in others in com
bination with other fertilizers. He
rotated his crops also and now considers
his farm among the best of its size in
middle Georgia. He regards the pea-
vine hay as one of the best restorers of
land and thinks highly also of the velvet
bean. This gentleman says that no land
that has ever been good can become so
exhausted.that its fertility, cannot be re
stored by skillful farming.—State Agri
cultural Department. —

“W M. Scott,
“State Entomologist.”
Professor Scott has been very diligent
in -detecting scale infested trees that
have been illegally shipped into Geor
gia. By virtue of the authority vested
in him he has confiscated and burned
more than 30,000 trees that had been
shipped into the state without a certifi
cate and in spite of Lis written protest.
Had these infested fruit trees escaped
detection, the good work^ that for the
last two years had- been going on in
Georgia and which has saved so many
orchards from ruin, would have been
undone in many fruitgrowing looalities.

To Cure Insomnia.
An English physician of distinction
gives these suggestions for cure of in
somnia: In cases where the patient
sleeps for an hour or two, then wakens
with a start and cannot go to sleep
again the physician recommends that a
hot water compress be laid on the ab
domen. When one cannot go to sleep
on retiring and is unable to dismiss
thoughts that have occupied the day, it
is advised that the patient keep his
feet in water as hot as he can bear
comfortably for ten minutes before go
ing to bed. He should then put on a
pair of thin cotton hose wrung out of
cold water and over those a pair of
woolen ones. A more powerful remedy
is a mustard sitz bath, with the propor
tion of a teacupful of mustard to a gal
lon of hot water. He should remain
seated in the hath from 10 to 20 min
utes. In many cases a reclining hath
in tepid water is ^useful as a sedative.
The Funniest Story?
Sir Wilfrid Laurier once said that he
considered the following the funniest
story in the world. Do you agree with
him?
A gentleman was once being taken
over an Idiot asylum. He asked an at
tendant how they knew when an idiot
was considered to be sufficiently restor
ed to sanity to be discharged.
“Oh,” said the attendant, “it is easily
managed. We take them into a yard
where there are several troughs. We
turn on the taps and then give the
idiots buckets to bail out the water
and empty the troughs. Many of them
go on bailing away while the tap keeps
running, but them that isn’t Idiots
stops the tap.”
new season with more than ordinary
confidence. Never before has this state
had more enthusiastic man at the fore
front of the dairy interest. They are
reaching out for new methods and bet
ter equipment in every branch of this
great industry; The dairy herd3 are
being continually improved. It is true
that there are yet many poor cows found
in the dairy herds, bat the day of the
“sernb” cow is rapidly passing.
We are finding out that only the host
breeds are worth the keeping, and Geor
gia is now putting upon the market
some of the best butter found in the
United States. We were gratified to
learn at the .ecent meeting of the Dairy
men’s association at Griffin that an ex
hibit of Georgia butter won the silver
medal in a contest with the world’s but
ter at the Paris exposition. The batter
was made at fhe creamery in LaGrange.
Ex-Governor Hoard of Wisconsin, who
has made dairying a life time business,
was present at the Griffin meeting, and
delighted his audience of more than 500
dairymen from different sections of onr
state, by saying that he could see no
reason why Georgia should not forage to
the front of the dairy states of the
Union.
