The delegations were requested to
submit written propositions, and in
behalf of the Perry delegation May
or Duncan presented the following:
Mr. Chairman:—
On January 21st there was held in
Perry, Houston county, Georgia, a
most enthusiastic and largely attend
ed meeting of the citizens of the
town of Perry and county for the
purpose of sending delegates to this
convention, so that you might be
fully informed as to the sentiments
and feelings entertained by that sec
tion as to the proposed construction
of the Brunswick & Birmingham
Railroad.
We can say that you have the cor
dial sympathy and support of every
citizen of Houston county, and that
they fully appreciate the inestimable
benefits to accrue to the whole state
in its construction.
That Houston county will furnish
the right of way through the coun
ty, and the town of Perry all termi
nal facilities and such financial as
sistance as may be reasonably re
quired.
That its construction will have the
hearty co-operation of the town of
Perry and county of Houston, and
be mutually beneficial to the road,
the town and the county.
Perry has a population, including
the suburbs, of 1200; is situated on
the banks of one of the finest water
powers in the state, and is as near
the center of the county as the sur
veyors who originally surveyed the
county could place it.
It is the county seat, and is sur
rounded by at least 15,000 acres of
fruit farms. There are shipped from
the surrounding territory 2,000 cars
of fruits and vegetables, nearly all
of which go to the east on account
Of the lack of railroad facilities to
the west.
Houston county is unsurpassed in
the variety of its agricultural prod
ucts. It produces every year 25,000
bales of cotton, which would be
shipped tlirough the port of Bruns
wick should this road be construct
ed through its borders.
The county has a population of
23,000.
It does not need development, but
does require additional railroad fa
cilities.
The traffic for the-road will not
have to be developed; it is already
on hand and is waiting for the road.
The road will not have to wait for
it. The road is needed, and our
need is your opportunity.
Respectfully submitted, 1
J. P. Duncan, Ch’m’n.
