Then the “existing conditions”
ar e to be regretted. While hotel
life affords conveniences and ad-,
vantages, it is not the kind of
life a family should be willing to
live very long.' Neither the hotel,
boarding-house nor the comma
city flat can afford a true home;
•least of all, a family home.
Those who have been so unfortu
nate as to have had no other,
have never known what a true
home is. The family should have
a home to itself, where it can
gather around its own^ fireside
and enjoy that peace and seclu
sion, that sweet communion and
contentment known not. beyond
its threihold. The family home
is the altar of love and patriot
ism, the foundation stone of the
republic. The family fireside
makes men better and braver and
truer; it gives them hope and
courage when all else fails, and
tends to lead them from tempta
tion and evil ways. Children fly
the roof tree soon enough. They
should be taught the meaning
and the benefits of home, and
there will everjinger with them
the memory of its beauty and
charm and sweetness. The hotel
may be a convenient eating and
sleeping place; it may save
household cares and annoyances,
but it is not home. A man loves
hi3 home; he wastes no affection
on his boarding place. A man
will fight for his home! Imagine
him fighting for his hotel i And
wqjhan ! The woman who has no
ambition to be mistress of a home
is to be pitied. Young man,
never marry a woman who is
content with hotel life, who
thinks a boarding place, where
they rent beds and sell hash, is a
home. There is a theme for the
preachers her?. Let them in
veigh against the decadence of
the family fireside; let them en
courage the home-builder, the
home-beautifier. Wherever pos
sible the home should have such
eternal adornments as trees and
grass and flowers. Within there
are few limits to the delights and
beauties that may be cultivated.
The home is the cradle of virtue
and liberty.

In the course of a debate at
which Blomfield, bishop of Lon
don, was asked to preside, one of
the students, with strong indigna
tion evident in his voice, address
ing the chair, inquired, orator-
iCally: “What, sir, would the
Apostle Paul have said, could he
have keen the life of luxury led
by our present race of prelates
and church dignitaries, riding
about in the carriages and living
in their palaces? What, sir, I re
peat, would he have said?” “I
think,” said the Bishop, inter
rupting the speaker, in a meek
and mild voice, “that he would
have said, ‘Things in the church
must be looking tip.’ ”
The Stomach controls the sit
uation. Those who are hearty and
strong are those who can eat and
digest plenty of food. Kodol Dys
pepsia Cure digests what you eat
and allows you to eat all the good
food you want. If you suffer from
indigestion, heart burn, belching
or any other stomach trouble, this
preparation can’t.help but do you
good. The most sensitive stom
ach can take it. H. M. Holtz-

so. And just in proportion as we
make our lives artificial we make
them profitless and unhappy. A
happy life cannot be lived in an
atmosphere surcharged with arti
ficiality. That is impossible. No
hope is defeated unless we defeat
that hope ourselves. No life is
thwarted unless we thwart its
highest fulfillment and develop
ment by our own actions. It ;is
with us, and with us only, wheth
er we allow the ‘swift currents of
prevailing customs’ to make our
lives complex. They do, unques
tion ably, and they are* dwarding
the inner lives of thousands of.wo-
men, and killing thousands of
others. But it is cowardly and
unjust to lay the blame and the
responsibility upon those ‘cus
toms.’ It is optional with us to
accept or reject them. There are
certain social laws which seem to
make these ‘customs’ right, but
every phase of a higher law, the
Divine law, proves them wrong.
There must be certain laws and
customs for the protection of the
social body. These are likewise
for our own individual protection
and are right, and ordinary com
mon-sense teaches us what these
