To Teachers and Students. The Georgia Division United Daughters of the Confederacy is engaged in an effort to secure funds for the erection of a dormitory an nex to the State Normal School at Athens. This annex will be erected to the memory of Miss Winnie Da vis, and devoted to the use of Con federate girls. In pursuance of this purpose, it is requested that every school in Geor gia devote part of Friday, May 10th, to a special program of Confederate interest, and d collection for the Winnie Davis memorial. This pro posed collection has the sanction of Commissioner Glenn. Money collected can be forwarded to Mrs. Enla Hollis, Americas, Ga., member of the committee for the third congressional district. (COXTIXUID FROM FIRST PAGE.) “It was not discipline, it not traditional renown, it was not mere generalship which carried that army through. It was per sonal, individual courage and de- and you fought them all without a mummur and without a doubt. And when the stars and bars went was | down to rise no more, you, still sustained and soothed by an un faltering trust” in the righteous ness of their Cause, helped to res cue the bleeding gSouth from the votion to principle which welded prostrating storms of reconstruc- it together and made it invinci ble, until it was almost extirpa ted.” The dash and daring displayed by the flower of Southern Chival ry in Pickett’s Last Charge at tion. And quickened to life by the magic touch of your loving hands, the Old South, having emerged from winters and - from wars, stands to-day resplendent as the proud possessor of the Georgia Knights Templar were in annual conclave at Americus last Tuesday, : The Georgia Sugar Refining Co., with headquarters at Brunswick, has applied to Glynn Superior court for a charter. Georgia Masons met in grand convocation at Rome Wednesday morning, May 8th, for a session of two days. »-•-« Col. Bryan says he would not be editing a newspaper now if he ex pected to be a candidate for presi dent in 1904. The annual meeting of county school commissioners of Georgia is now session at Athens, and will con tinue through the week. One good result has followed the •crusade of Mrs. Nation against liq uor saloons in Kansas. A Law En forcement League has been organ ized in that state, and a local “chap ter” will be established in every town and city in Kansas. The stated purpose is to purify politics in that state, and secure the contin ual enforcement of law. It is said the Gould railroad in terests have gone counter to the Tanderbilt interests, and a fight for supremacy is about to be commenc ed, if it is not already on. It be coming evident that'the feould peo ple were attempting to gain control of a dominating system of transcon tinental railroads, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the Vanderbilt peo ple, believing their railroad interests would be injured, entered protest and contest. It will be a battle of financial giants. | t-O—« Eire in Jacksonville, Florida, de stroyed 140 blocks of buildings last Friday. The fire originated in a small factory, a defective wire being the cause. The buildings burned were stores, hotels, churches, resi dences, and with their contents the destruction amounted to about $15,- 000,000 in value. Over ten thousand people were rendered homeless and penniless, and dire suffering would %ave resulted but for the relief fur bished from other cities in Florida •and other states in tents, clothing, money and food. *-•-* The mandamus against Treasurer Park, to compel him to pay out pub lic property funds on executive war rants to pay school teachers, -was ar gued before Judge Candler in At lanta last week. The decision rather evaded the issue. Mr. Park refused :io pay the warrants because the ;fund in question had been set apart by the state constitution to pay the public debt, and he held that it could be legally used for no other .purpose. Judge Candler declared >hat the treasurer is not in any sense ^. judicial officer, and should have honored the warrants in question. Gettysburg, gave to the world an grandest civilization in this world® example of man’s heroism which | To the young men of our land who ought to gather inspiration from the glory of our past—leg me remind you that we are the inher itors of the richest legacy trans mitted through the channels of warfare to a nation’s posterity since Joshua stood beyond Jordan and the walls of Jericho crumbled. Six hundred thousand of our vali ant sires met two million six hun dred thousand invaders from the North, and they defended their Southland till all was gone save honor. On almost every battle field each Southern soldier fought from four to ten of the enemy wresting from all the victories won a share almost inversely pro portional to the numbers engaged They fought as representatives of the loftiest type of chivalry this world has seen since the days of Charlemagne. They proved their mettle, demonstrated their patri otism, and the survivors returned each wearing a crown of honor They were not whipped; they wore themselves out whipping their foes. Their unconquered, uncon querable Saxon blood flows through your veins. We ought to be proud of their mighty deeds, and resolve that, as each of the venerable veterans now living falls on sleep in com pany with comrades gone before we shall advance each to take his- place, transmitting to others, as they have to us, substantial evi dences of duty well done, of the “victories of peace no less renown ed than war.” But above all, let us help to keep alive the purpos es of this Memorial Association In the rapturous words of a fa mous Southern orator I may say of this organization: The snows that fall on Mf. Washington are not purer than the motives which begot it; the fresh dew-laden zephyrs from the orange groves of the South are not sweeter than the thoughts its ad vent inspired; the flight of our symbolic eagle, tho’ he blow his breath on the sun, can not be higher than its expected destiny.” A tramp stole a bottle of Dr. Cald- 'well’s Syrup Pepsin. When he ap peared in court he explained that he .saw in the advertisement that it was ct easy to take,” so he took it, “Dis charged,” said the judge. “I will go and take some myself.” It is easy to take and is a perfect laxative. Sold by druggists. which only Southern blood has furnish ed. Storming those steel-crowned heights that rained a deluge of death, the surviving remnant re turned to their command, weep ing because they had not accom plished the impossible. And the Old South writhed in Waterloo’s woes, but the blood there spilt to defend her Cause, if chemically examined, would yield from each drop the essence of a patriotism as pure as the Marathon valor which j>ut to flight the Persian hosts and paved the way for Eu ropean civilization. When at last the brave band of boys in Gray was surrounded at Richmond by the best equipped army that ever stood on American soil, then the glorious courage, the indomitable spirit of the Southern soldiery, gleamed forth in all of its martial intrepidity. “It had no more thought of surrender then khan when it had first burst into flame on the victorious field of Bull Run. It was the crystalliza tion of Southern courage.” “Across the desolated land it retired like a wounded lion, sore pressed by unnumbered foes, stop ping only to fight, for there was no rest nor food. Even in that hour of its extremity, the one cry of the little baud to the adored Lee was to be led against them once more.” Brave heroes of the Southern Confederacy 1-Theirs is a deathless fame, for they fought for princi ple, and principle can not die. No true American now tries to tar nish their names. Two years ago, a Republican President, standing on Georgia soil, said: “The time has come when, jn the spirit of fraternity, this government can in honor help to care for the graves of the Confederate^dsjad; when all can, with loyalty to the' Union, admit ^as a sublime truth that every soldier killed on both sides in the Civil War was a sacrifice made on the altar of American lonor and American patriotism.” But Southern women, not without due appreciation of the President’s magnanimity, said: “No, these memories are /mr memories, these graves are our graves, these honor ed dead are a part of our heart and soul.” And the Old South, grand old mother, holds them sleeping in her great wide bosom, far richer in their Confederate dust alone than India, with her wealth of countless millions, or Africa, with her treasured pyra mids lifted to the skies. Grand women of the South, as your hands care for the graves of our fallen heroes, so your sublime devotion to them and their Cause made them victorious on many a field of battle. The soldiers made the material fight, but you, with the little ones at home, were the victims of one of the most cruel wars that ever ravaged this earth. In the midnight of our desolation you waited m silent suffering, fighting the battles of stony an guish, starvation, and suspense, FASHIONABLE CLOTHING F0R MEN AND B0YS. SPRING 1901.
