I is only natural that the high prices that cotton has command ed during the last year should re sult in a general increase in the acreage. The New York Journal of Commerce has collected statis tics from which it is estimated tha t there has been an average in crease of 5 per cent over that of last year. ' All'the figures tabulated by the paper were gathered between May 20th and May 28th ^ the greater part between May 25 and 28th. All told, it is estimated that 25,- 500,000 acres have been planted in cotton, t Last year’s yield was 9,489,559 bales, so that if the usu al crop were raised to the acre the yield would be near 10,000,000 bales. However, cold weather has hurt some districts. In some sections of the South boll weevil is report ed. Still, this is the season of the year when reports are often dis couraging which are usually .folowed by conditions that com pletely upset all the forecasts. Within the past week thera has been a noticeable change for the better in agricultural conditions throughout the country. The Cold and damp weather has been suc ceeded in the South as well as in the North by clear skies. The farmers have been able to get in to the fields. Kansas, which Items of Interest. seems to be one of the few sec tions that have been without rain, has had a rainfall that makes the outlook bright. There is a tendency on the part of every agricultural; community when the least discouragement exists to overestimate thO damage. This is a phase of human nature which perhaps has its influence on the marketl Just as certain agen cies in the' South, run for the ben efit of investors across the water, have a tendency to estimate a big prop, thus moking the prices low er, so it is offset by the agricul tural tendency to, boost prices, r Between these two antagonistic aims lies the middle rood of calm judgment, which in the present instance seems to indicate that the cotton crop of 1901 will not be behind that of former years. “ Will wonders ei iuired the friends Seven Years in Bed, t , , $m| of Mrs. L. The experience which a certain young lady had in London on the day of Queen Victoria’s funeral will serve as an excellent warning for those women who are inclined to al low their humanitarian impulses to get the better of them. t This sym pathetic lady relieved a woman who appeared to be in a fainting state of her baby and had it left upon her hands by the disappearance of the mother. After waiting in vain for the mother to return, the.embarrass ed young woman tqld her story to a policeman on the outskirts of the crowd. “I have heard that story before,” he grinned in a knowing way and refused to believe her. A visit to the police station brought the same result—an utter, disbelief of the unfortunate yoimg woman’s story. The workhouse was tried, but with no better fortune.
