. ; - . - —- ■ Kw Are the Negroes Dispersing? New York "World. The? New Orleans are rejoicing over the fact Composition on Love. .the reports of the hew census show Louisiana to be “a white State”— having, for the first time, a clear preponderance of white A tion. In 1$80 the State fyad'a ne gro majority of 27,874; in 1900 the white majority was 78,808. The Picayune finds in the re turns of that and other Southern States support for its theory that the diffusion of the negro popula tion throughout the territory o:: the Union is the only hope of re lief for the congestion of that ele ment in the Southern States. The returns of race population according to the last census, are given for five Southern States be sides Louisiana. In Alabama the white majority has increased, in round numbers, from 45,000 in 1870 to 173,000 in 1900; in Arkan sas, in these three decades, from 239,000 to 577,000; in Kentucky from 876,000 to 1,579,000; in Ma ryland, from 430,000 to 717,000. The excessive death-rate among the blacks and a white immigra tion to some of these States will account for part of the changes but the Picayune thinks when al the returns shall be in it will be found that there is a very decidec increase in the negro population of most of the Northern States caused by the movemeut of South ern negroes into them. ” The bet ter wages and wider field of em ployment at the North have at tracted many, but the diffusion has been so "general as to attract no attention in any particular State. ' Love is a thing that makes peo newspapers. pie think each other pretty when that | nobody else does. An Extinct Florida Town. The Wehawitchka News gives the following account of the pres ent appearance of the old towi/of St. Joseph, once the most flour ishing seaport of Florida: At old St. Joe millions of brickbats and whole brick mark the site of the town that once had from 5,000 to 15,000 inhabitants. The only in habitants we saw were about fifty head of cattle and a pair of sand hill oranes. Yet this place back in tie 30’s and 40’s, was the most important place in the state. If was here the first Constitutional Convention was held, and came near being the capital of the state. Yellow fever depopulated the town and from that time on it went down. Many of the houses were moved, to Apalachicola. We visjted the old cemetery and found many graves, but only ten with inscriptions to identify them. The vaults, made of the best brick, had been opened and bones caff be seen. The fences around the graves had fallen down by fire burning the posts, yet today, some sixty years afterward, the pickets are souud as a dollar. From all reports, St. Joseph was a wide-open town, gambling in ight on Sunday as well as week ays, and it is’said there was not a church in the place.” “Have by some surgeon Shy- lock on <thy charge to stop his wounds lest he do bleed to death.” People can bleed to death. The loss of blood weakens the body. It must follow that gain of blood gives the body strength. The strengthening effect of Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery is in large part due to its action on the blood-making glands and the in creased supply of pure, rich blood it produces. It is only when th^ blood is impoverished and im=- phre th*et disease finds a soil in which to root. The “Discovery” purifies the blood and makes it It causes two persons to be aw ful quiet when you’re round anc also quiet when you’re not rounc —only in a different way." It also causes people to sit to gether on one,, end of a bench when there’s heaps of room on the other end. Nurses has it and sometimes policemen. That’s when they flon’t know where you are, anc you have lots of fun playing on the grass. Husbands and wiyes has it, but most generally only lovers. Old people don’t have much ’cause it has to be about dimples and red cheeks and fluffy curls and lots of things which old peo pie don’t ever have* When I grow up, I’ll have to go and love some one, I suppose Only she’ll have to let me say what to do. I’ve written all I know about it till I do grow up.—Eddy in New York Sun. A note was made recently of a discussion that had taken place among some scientists out West as to whether it be possible for a snake to move backward. One of them contended that it is, for he said he had seen a rattlesnake en ter its Mole tale first.* The sense of the meeting was against him however, the others claiming that it is physically impossible for snake fco move backward. A cow boy, who has heard about the dis cussion* and whose life on the plains has given him many ; chance to learn the habits of rat tiers, settles the disputed poirifc by a very simple explanation. A rattlesnake, he says, starts into his hole head-first, but being too wise to leave the rear part of his body un watched, he makes a half turn after going in a few inches, thus bringing his head to the en trance again. That being done ie allows the rear of his body to glide down out of sight. * The story of a new trust, and one that will come into direct communication with housewives, comes from Philadelphia. There are 6,000 grocery stores in that city. A syndicate proposes to buy up at least half of them, and by inference, run the other half out of business. It is calculated that 3,000 of them can be bought, at the rate ofJ $2,000 each. Half a million dollars will be added as working capital, making the in vestment $6,500,000. The propri etors of the places purchased are to be retained as managers- It is figured out that the stores could se made to average each $25,000 a year in sales, with profits of 10 ler cent., making an annual re turn of $7,000,000 on a capitaliza tion of $500,000.—Savannah News. $100 Reward, $100.
