The Montgomery Advertiser quotes
Captain V. B. Atkins of that city as
saying:
“I drove through the country from
Selma to Benton recently and saw a
great deal of cotton affected with a
new disease that has made its ap
pearance during the past two or
three years. A stalk of cotton will,
to all appearances, have the rust, but
the new disease can be told from the
rust very easily; Rust commences at
the bottom of cotton and works its
way toward the top. The new dis
ease commences at the top and works
downward. The leaves dry up as if
withered by frost and the stalk dies.
When you pull up the stalk and ex
amine it the bark slips off and the
woody stalk has a black appearance,
the space between the. bark and the
stalk being filled with a dark watery
substance that causes the etalk to
wither and decay. The agricultural
.department says that the disease is
caused by a deterioration of the seed
that produced the stalk, and advises
that every stalk thus affected be
pulled up and burned. If this is not
done the bolls on the stalks will pop
open and the cotton will be picked,
and the consequence will be that the
seed from the diseased stalk will be
planted next year along with the
good seed and the disease will
spread. The new disease may thus
affect the cotton crop very material
ly. If the newspapers would call the
attention of thd farmers to the dis
ease, so that they could pull up the
affected stalks and bum them as di
rected, a grqwing evil might be
eradicated before it got too firm a
hold on the cotton of the south.” -
The Latest Fad.
The latest thing is to wear a leath
er watch chain. They are very styl
ish, and the most durable chain
made. The prettiest and best chains
made are those made here in the
penitentiary by the convicts. They
must be seen to be appreciated.
They sell to the people of this city
for 25 cents each, but are worth
much more. I sell them at the fol
lowing prices, postage paid, viz: One
chain 20 cts., three chains 50 cts., 1
dozen $1.80. I have a cheaper grade
at just half these prices. Miniature,
or doll shoes, made of fancy leather,
stitched with fancy thread and lined
with gay colored ribbon, at same
prices. By ordering of me you help
a poor crippled man,who has to walk
on two crutches, who was wrongful
ly convicted of an alleged crime
against the government, who los; all
his property and has a wife and
three children entirely dependent.

The Chicago Chronicle says:
“The abuses of the pension sys
tem are notorious. They are so
closely allied with many other
abuses,political and personal,that
probably there can be no hope of
an immediate reform. These abu
ses proceed chiefly from the dem
agogy of Congress, the looseness
with which laws are drawn and
enforced and the reckless appeals
of influential individuals.”
A San Juan correspondent writes
in the Baltimore Sun that base
ball is becoming very popular in
Porto Rico. Several clubs have

the players are Americans, em

private concerns as well as in
government officers.

Capt. James McQueen Forsyth,

opinion that the Sampson-Schlev
