Eaekmonthly crop report issued by the United States department oj ’ agriculture represents the co-opera tion of an army of 250,000 men scat tered through every farming com munity in the United States. This is a volunteer army in which only a few of the field officers ceive pay. The rank and file serve for the love of the cause and for the sake of having their names on the mailing list of the agricultural de partment for its publications. Under the general direction of the secreta ry of agriculture, the commander-in chief of the entire force is John Hyde, the statistician of ’the agri cultural department, who is at pres ent on his way home from Europe, where he has been arranging for the interchange of crop statistics be tween the United States and Euro pean countries. Th6 correspondents who gather in the information as to the state of the com crop and other crops throughout the United States are divided into three classes. There are in the country 2,750 counties of agricultural importance. In each of these counties the department has a principal county correspondent. These men are the non-commission ed officers of the statistical army, and are selected with great care and with special reference to their quali fiations for the service. Each coun ty correspondent has three assist ants, each of whom covers a spec ified territory in the county. It is the business of each assistant to ac qUaint himself with the acreage un der cultivation and the condition of the growing crops in his territory. He is furnished with blank forms, on which he makes- monthly returns to the county correspondent. The coun ty correspondent consolidates these returns, which he supplements with the results of his own observation and knowledge of the situation. He then forwards his report direct to the statistician in the department at Washington.—Exchange. One-fourth of the sea-carrying power is in the hands of 30 large companies of various nationalities. Only one of these is American, and it controls only 81,000 tons out of the total of 5,616,000 tons controll ed by the 30 companies. In the last decade England has built 4,638 steel steamers, with a capacity of 9,793,- 000 tons. In the same time America ha» built only 465 steel steamers, with a capacity of 743,000 tons, and 198 of these steamers, representing 450,000 tons, were for the inland commerce of the great lakes. The reward of one duty is the power to fulfil another. It is not wise to despise wealth, but it is far inferior to moral worth. The man who drives a sharp bargain opens the door for retali ation. If one treat an enemy as a friend he may make a friend of the enemy. Knowledge is the only fountain of the love and the principles of human liberty. If all men are born equal then Mr. Conduct will have many sins to answer for. A sound discretion is not so much indicated by never making a mistake as by never repeating it. A true philosopher never ar gues. He mentally concludes his opponent is a fool and lets it go at that. The acme of perfection would soon be reached if people would only follow the advice they give others. Time draweth wrinkles in a fair face, but addeth fresh colors to a fast friend which neither heat nor cold nor misery nor place nor den sity can alter or diminish. It is not things but opinions about things that trouble man kind. When therefore, we are worried or troubled or grieved, never let us blame any other than ourselves, that is to say, our opin ions. It requires no little heroism to act always in accordance with right principles; but it is the ob stacles that present themselves to doing so which renders the triumph toJ)e achieved over them more meritorious. It is not always easy to distin guish what is genuinely noble and unselfish from what is prompted oy expediency and hope of gain. Outwardly actions may look alike which inwardly are inspired by en tirely different motives- Special attention f given to The . systematic examination of more than 40,000 pairs of human ears in England and France has re sulted in some interesting conclu sions. For one thing, it is ascertain ed that the ear continues to grow in the later decades of life; in fact, it appears never to stop growing until death.—Ex. 3E3epa,irIrLgr Horse- , Slxoeln Our Prices are Low. This money is needed to conduct the business of the country and is not needed by the government which thus withdraws it from cir culation. Clearly a still further reduction of taxation is required.” Sid Darling, 1012 Howard St. Port Huron, Mich, writes: “I have tried many pills and laxa tives but DeWitt’s Little Early Risers are far the best pills I have ever used.” They never gripe.— Holfczclftw’s drugstore.
