To Buy More Islands.
_ ' Atlanta Journal.
It seems certain that sooner or
later the United States will own
the Danish West Indies.
President Grant tried to buy
them BO years ago. Denmark was
anxious to seil them, but the sen
ate rejected the treaty that pro
vided for their transfer to our gov
ernment ^
Since McKinley became presi
dent there has been much corres
pondence between our state de
partment and Denmark oq the
subject of the sale of these islands,
and it seems that a bargain is
about to be struck at last for a
consideration of 16.,000,000 kron
en, or about $4,500,000.
If the islands are worth ^having
at all this is a very reasonable
price for them.
There are three islands in the
little West Indian group owned by
Denmark, namely, St. Croax, Sit.
Thomas and St. John.
They have a total area of only
118 square miles, with a jiopula-
tion 114,614. Their exports are
. about $3,449,164 yearly and their
imports about $4,500,000. .
The population is , composed
mainly of negroes engaged in
cultivation of sugarcane.
The United States have no
commerce with these islands worth
speaking of.
The bulk of their exports is sugar
and they import little except cot
ton goods. The soil is rich and
under intelligent cultivation ca
pable of greatly increased and va
ried production. It is believed
that the islands would be of con
siderable value to the United
States for naval purjporses. Den
mark does not make expenses on
her three little islands in the Wesib
Indies, but we might do better
provided we could induce a suffi
cient number of white men to take
hold of them and. develop them.
It is probable that a treaty pro
viding for the purchase of these
islands will be submitted to the
senate at the next session of con
gress.
How can people sneer at Chris
tian Science in view of facts like
this? Out in Iowa an earnest ad
vocate of the “Science^’ noted a
very lame man passing her house
and determined to affect a cure
through absent treatment. After
several days of prayer she was de
lighted to see that his limp had
almost entirely disappeared.. That
evening she accosted him as he
appeared and joyfully related
what she had done for him. “Yes
ma’am, it has been very bad late
ly, but yesterday I had it fixed.
You see it is a wooden leg.”
Has Two Healthy Healthy Hearts.
Says a Chicago correspondent :
Injuries in an explosion made
known to Karl Wambold that he
has two healthy hearts.
Thirty-four years old, of medi
um statute, broad-shouldered and
fair-complexioned, Mr. Wambold
beaPs no external evidence of be
ing different from other men, yet
wherever he goes medical men be
siege him for private exhibitions.
As soon as medical college vaca
tions are ended he will return to
Chicago from a tour which he is
now making of the Northern Lake
districts.
Abont twelve years ago, while
working as fa laborer in a stone
quarry in Germany, his native
country, Mr. Wambold went to
learn why a charge of powder had
failed to ignite in a .blast. An
explosion occurred. With sever
al other men he was picked up
for dead, and while his compan
ions were carrying his supposed
corpse from the scene one of them
put an ear to his right breast.
The heart beat was discernible,
though on the wrong side of Wam-
bold 3 s bddy.
When the surgeon arrived they
found not only the adnormal or
gan, but the normal one as, well.
The right heart is said to per
form its functions as piroperly as
the left, against which it presses
slightly, and both are as free
from disease apparently as any
normal heart.
An item is going the rounds of
the press to the effect-, that whis
key is made out of old rags. We
see nothing remarkable , about
this. Every one knows that near
ly all the old rags in this country
are manufactured out of whiskey,
and there is no reason Why the
process of conversion may not
work as well one way as another—
from whiskey to rags and from
rags to whiskey. What a beauti
ful business it is! —Marietta Jour

What we may do may weary

Take care of the stomach and
the health will'take care of itself.
If people only realized the sound
ness of that statement the major
ity might live to a good old age
like Moses, “the eye undimmed,
the natural force unabated.” It
is in the stomach that the blood
is made. It is from the stomach
that nourishment is dispensed to
nerve and muscle. If the stom
ach is “weak” it can’t do its
whole work for each part of the
body. If it is diseased the dis
ease will taint tfie nourishment
which is distributed, and so spread
disease throughout the body. It
was the realization of,the impor
tance of the stomach is the very
center of health and the common
source of disease, which led Dr.
Pierce to prepare his “Golden
Medical Discovery.” “Diseases
which originate in the stomach
must be cured through the stom
ach.” The soundness of this the
ory is proved every day by cures
of diseased organs, heart, liver,
lungs, blood,—by the use of the
“Discovery” which is solely and
singly a medicine for the blood
and organs of digestion and nutri
tion. It is a temperance medi
cine containing no alcohol, whis
ky or orther intoxicant.

Boy Character.
It is the greatest delusion in the
world for a~boy to get the idea
that his life is of no consequence,
and that the character of 'it will
not be noticed. A manly, truth
ful boy will shine like a star in
any community. A boy may pos
sess as much of noble character
as a man. He may so speak and
live the truth that there shall be
no discount on his word. And
there are such noble Christian
boys; and wider and deeper than
they are apt to think is their in
fluence. They are the king boys
among their fellows, having an
immense influence for good, and
loved and respected because of
the simple fact of living the
truth.
Dear boys, do be truthful.
Keep your word as absolutely sa
cred. Be known for your fidelity
to church and Sunday school. Be
true in every friendship. Help
