Houston Superior Court.
#
The fall term of Houston Supe
rior court will open next Monday
morning at 9 o’clock.
There are. 59 cases on the .civil
trial docket, and all have been
set for Monday and Tuesday. This
docket is larger than that of the
last April term by 8 or 10 cases.
There are seven Superior court
prisoners in jail, all negroes, and
about 40 defendants are under
bond. Three of the prisoners in
jail are charged with murder, two
of them in one case.
The volume of business is
enough to engage the court two
full weeks’.
—Bishop Turner, of the African
Methodist church, was in Perry
last Sunday, and at 3 p. m,
preached in the court house. Be
cause of the failure to give pub
licity to his coming, the congre
gation was comparatively small.
Some of our most prominent white
citizens were present, and declare
the sermon, which was also some
what of a political lecture, exced-
ingly good. His text was “And
the kingdom of Heaven is likened
to a certain woman who took three
measures of meal, etc.” He des
ignated Shem,Ham and Japhet as
the three measures, the church as
the woman, and the grace of God
as the leaven. During the sermon
he declated that it is folly for the.
negro race to expect- political re
cognition now, a the Anglo
Saxon is the controlling race, and
will so continue here. As an
opinion he declared that the ne
groes must go from this county
to Africa, or become practically
exterminated. The Bishop came
here by special invitation of the
presiding elder of this district.
—The oldest daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. W. N. Boler died at
their home in the upper town dis
trict, about six miles north of
Perry last Sunday afternoon.
The burial was at Fort Valley
Monday afternoon. We are told
she was taken sick with scarlet fe
ver Friday, three days prior to her
death. She was about 13 years
old. The bereaved parents and
other members of the family have
the sincere sympathy of their
frinds.
—The lands of the estate of the
late G. M. T. Feagin to be divid
ed among, the heirs, according to
the will, were sold at public sale
before the court house door in
Perry last Monday by Executor
U. V. Whipple. The property
brought fair prices, and the pur
chasers were H; N. Feagin, Mrs.
G. M. T. Feagin and W. H. Tal-
ton.
—Just before going to press we
learn that Mr. W. A. Mooreland
died his home about 2-| miles east
of Perry Tuesday evening. The
bereaved widow has the sincere
sympathies of her many friende.
Fuller notice will be given next
week.
Shot In Church.
In the New Hope Methodist
church last Saturday night Isaac
Dennard shot John Baker, a
chuach festival being in progress.
The wound was not serious, the
ball entering the fleshy part -of
the leg above the knee.
Dennard escaped arrest, though
sheriff Cooper and a posse search
ed dilligently for him several
hoiirs immediately after he was
notified. /
The story goes that when Den
nard entered the church he saw
Baker seated near the pulpit with
his (Dennard’s) girl. He told
Baker to go away, or he would
shoot him. Baker refused to go,
and Dennard shot him.
Both are well-known young ne
groes, Baker being a son of the
pastor of the church in which he
was-shot.
—At the court house in Perry
last Monday night, an apprecia
tive audience was delighted with
the entertainment affordod by Mr.
Ralph Bingham, the, noted mono
logue entertainer. He appeared
under the auspices of the local
Lyceum, through contract with
the Alkahest Lyceum of Atlanta.
Mr. Bigham is exceedingly versa
tile, and it is dificult to say in
which role he is best. The pro
gram Monday night embraced mu-
cic on the violin and piano, im-
persanation, mismicry, recitation,
song, dialect, and in each he ex
celled.
—“Socks,” our Mossy Hill cor
respondent, virtually challenges
other sections of the county to
make exhibits at our County fair
equal to that the farmers of his
neighborhood propose to show.
If this spirit prevails in several
districts, our fair will be one of
the best agricultural exhibits ev
er seen in Geergia.
