Reciprocity annuls protective tar iff legislation, and is antagonistic to republican policy. Q—« — In endorsing reciprocity, the re publicans are practically “stealing democratic thunder.” Macon will be in gala attire next week, with the Elks’ el fresco fair and the veterans’ reunion. President Roosevelt will prove himself brave indeed if he serves the entire country in preference to the republican party. Millions of brick to be made in Jones county, Ga., will be used in the walls of an underground tunnel in New York city. Mr. JNO. Since October ist over 400 letters for members of the legislature have been sent to Atlanta, and the legis lature will not assemble until next Wednesday. The latest government estimate places the 1901 cotton crop at about 9,500,000 bales. This is a consider able falling off, and should cause a material rise in price. Rev. T. H. Leitch of South. Caro lina closed a very successful revival meeting at Macon last Sunday night. The meeting continued three weeks, with two services each day. In endorsing reciprocity in our trade relations with other countries, republican leaders practically ac knowledge that they have been in error in their protective tariff legis lation. duty and right not excepted. He has declared that he will ap point republicans to office whenever he finds them worthy and well qual ified, but that he will appoint dem ocrats when he finds them superior to the republican applicants. In Al abama and South Carolina demo crats have already been appointed, and republican protests have follow ed. All this good for President Roose velt and good for the country. How ever, the good for the president is not from a party standpoint, and he will soon be given notice, with em phasis, that if he fails to serve the republican party through his official authority, the republican party will refuse to serve him when he desires re-election to office He will be told in unmistakable terms that a repub lican president must consider the welfare of that party paramount, else he cannot farther receive emol uments through that party. Mr. Roosevelt is believed to he an honest man, with positive convic tions and with courage to act ac cording thereto, but the republican leaders will never acknowledge that any man owing his elevation to their party has any right to serve the country other than in accord with republican policy. So far the democrats have plen tiful commendation for President Roosevelt, and they hope he will continue to be so deserving. This commendation is not based upon any desire for democratic party ben efit, or republican injury, but be cause they hope and desire service for the republic rather than service for a party. uled to arrive Macon forenoon Oct. 26; final limit Oct. 28* Confederate Veterans’ Re-union, Macon, Ga., Oct. 21-27, 1901—one cent per mile; tickets on sale Oct. 22-23, and for trains scheduled to arrive Macon forenoon Oct. 24; final limit Oct. 25. It is not unlikely that a state con stitutional convention will cost Geor gia more than it would be worth. Our legislators should not incur such a great expense without the most careful consideration. It is reported from London that the British government will agree to the abrogation of the treaty that prevents the United States from controlling the proposed isthmian canal. Further, it is said our next congress will provide for the con struction of such a canal. Recently we have heard several politicians express the opinion that there would he only two candidates for governor of Georgia when the campaign becomes active next spring. No two of these politicians named the same two candidates as those who will remain in the race. There are three candidates for mayor of Macon, and it seems that retrenchment in municipal expendi tures will be the leading issue in the campaign. Without any desire to meddle, we venture to express the hope that Mayor Bridges Smith will be re-elected. The nomination will by white primary. The final census report of 1900 on the population of the United States has been made public. The total population is 76,003,387, of which 66,990,802 are white and 9,312,585 colored,' 8,840,78^5 being of negro descent. The whites show an in crease of much greater per cent than the negroes. There air? 1 per cent more males than females in the total population. Whatever the Schley court of in quiry may have disclosed, or what ever the final “verdict” may be, there is a pathetic connection that was not originally considered, That is, the physical and mental condition of Admiral Sampson. Whatever the opinion of the people may be con cerning the relative credit due to either Sampson or Schley in their connection with the Spanish-Ameri- ican war, universal sympathy will be accorded Admiral Sampson and his family if it be true that physical misfortune has overtaken him. On this subject our Washington correspondent says: “At last an official statement has been made in regard to the disease with which Admiral Sampson is suf fering. It is a form of ‘aphasia,’ a complaint which attacks both the memory and the speech. A patient suffering with it will talk along, thinking that he is saying certain words, when, as a matter of fact, he is saying nothing but gibberish. Further, he will be convinced that he remembers things that, as a mat ter of fact, do not, and never did, exist. The worst of it is that the navy department admits that Samp son has been suffering with this since long before the Spanish war, and that it was growing on him all the time, the attacks increasing in frequency. It is well known in the navy that he had such a severe at- SL WORTHY SUCCESSOR. •‘Something New Under the Sun.” PRICE LIST PER GALLON'.
