It is rumored that he intends to consult with conserva tive southern Democrats such as Morgan, McEnery, Clark Howell, etc., and with their assistance to construct a plan for the distribu tion of patronage in the south, so as to make a title to federal office down there a claim to respect in stead of the reverse, as it now is. Unlike ail former Republican Presidents, whose nominations were assured by the southern delegates, Mr. Roosevelt owes absolutely nothing to any of these, and is therefore free to strike out a radical course, and attempt to build up a respectable white republican party in the south, unhampered by the com plications that so obstructed all his predecessors. Whether the south will respond to this course by votes or not, remains to be seen. Some handsome American wo men of stately proportion as to altitude, says a Paris correspon dent, have been prominent here of late, and Parisiennes have gaz ed upon them with envy. Now comes forward a French professor who claimes to have a process by which he can supply the demanc for increased stature, even though the subject may have reached ma turity.
