Amount of Sugar We Use.
The Houston Home Journal.
Perry, Ga.
Pear Sir:—As a good deal has
recently appeared in print regard
ing the consumption of sugar in
this country, the various sources
from which it is obtained, the
amount of duty paid thereon, etc.,
the following facts and figures
will, we believe, be of interest to
your readers:
“The total consumption of su
gar in the United States last year
was 2,219, 847 tons, and based on
the average increase of 6.84 per
cent, during the past 19 years, the
consumption should be 2,860,585
tons. Of this quantity 1,000,000
tons in round figures will come
from American sources, say Lou
isiana being able to produce 350,-
000 tons, United States beet fac
tories 150,000, Hawaii, 350,000
aud Porto Rico 150,000, all being
free of duty, leaving 1,360,585
tons to come from other sources
and on which duty is paid. The
average duty assessed is $36 per
ton, or a total of $48,981,060. The
price of all the sugar consumed,
however, being enhanced to the
extent of the duty of $36 per ton
or a total of $84,981,060, it is evi
dent that $36,000,000 additional
is paid by the people in order to
provide the Government with 49
millions for revenue, of which the
Gevernment is not now in need.
If the duty is taken off Cuba su
gar, the benefit of 85 millions goes
to the people.
“On October 8th, the quotation
for Cuba Centrifugal Sugar 96
test, free on board Cuba was 1.96/
per pound., duty on same amounts
to 1.685/—equivalent to 86 per
cent, advalorem.”

The New York Evening Post
quotes the following as Gen. Mac-
Arthur’s judicial estimate of Agui- !
naldo, “made at least oi> a semi-offi-!
cial way:”
“Aguinaldo as a personage and a ■
character has been quite a surprise !
to all of us since his capture. His’
conduct while in custody of the
American forces has been quiet, dig
nified, manly, and in every other re
spect of a kind calculated to excite
admiration. Aguinaldo is a man of
considerable personality. His digni
ty soon came to be a matter of re
mark among those with whom he
was brought into contact after his
capture, and upon being confined he
did not offer a sign or utter a word
of resentment on account of his cap
tivity. The Americans found him
to be a great deal more of a man
than they first thought he was. He
no doubt has accepted American su
premacy as inevitable, and I believe
he now is satisfied with the manner
in which we are conducting the af
fairs of the archipelago. Of course,
when a man is dragged down from
his lair in the mountains he is not in
good humor to conduct himself with
any degree of equanimity and diplo
macy; but Agvinaldo has done so,
and as a result he has received a
great deal of enconium • from his
captors. He never has made an in
quiry of the Americans as to what
disposition they intended making of
his case. "What disposition finally
will be made of him is hard to tell.”
This is a pleasing picture, but the
description doesn’t necessarily imply
either unusual ability or strength of
character in the sense of integrity,
and does not blot out the celebrated
Filipino’s record of having sold out
to Spain and then betrayed his
trust. Aguinaldo is a Spanishized
Filipino, trained, to the Spanish
standard of decorum. Personal dig
nity among Spaniards is reputed to
be an almost universal characteristic.

The most foolish thing in the
world is to lose one’s temper. Of
old the wisest of men said, “Better
is he that rnleth his spirit than he
that taketh a city.” The person in
authority who is self-con trolled can
control others—children, servants,
and employes generally. No one can
govern subordinates who is not able
to goven himself. When one loses
temper in the home, and says bitter
things in a hasty mood, there is sure
to come an after-time of sor
row and repentance, and there is a
hurt in the heart which may or may
not last for years. There are scars
that never cease to throb, though
the old wound seems to be healed.

It would not be surprising if there
should be an exhibition of extrava
gance at the approaching session of
congress. The treasury is so full
that it is difficult to find storage for
all the government’s gold and silver.
The amount now actually in the
treasury, according to the latest re
port, is $1,190,225,224. Of this
$534,000,000. is gold and nearly
$500,000,000 is silver. It is a safe
statement that never before in this
country, and never in any other
country, was there snch an amount
of money in the possession of the
government.—Marietta Journal.
