There are thousands of men in
Georgia who know that the evils of
whiskey drinking are greatly in
creased by the enticements of bar
rooms and the social features of
these establishments. These men
would gladly see prohibition prevail,
but they doubt the efficacy of any
such law that has for its foundation
only legislative enactment.
That there will be a persistent ef
fort to make prohibition the chief
issue in the next Georgia state cam
paign is accepted as a fact, and we
believe it can be made successful if
the campaign is conducted without
bitterness ir keeping with the out
line given in the following state
ment reproduced from the Atlanta
Constitution of last Saturday:
“A joint meeting of the Georgia
Prohibition Association and the in
terdenominational temperance com
mittee was held in Atlanta Thurs
day evening. There were present
members from Savannah, Rome,
Warrenton, Macon and other points.
The meeting was enthusiastic and
harmonious, and a large amount of
business was transacted. It is said
that these organizations will take a
prominent part in the next cam
paign. It is not a political organi-
xation. though it will work through
the democratic party. It will re
quire every candidate for the state
house offices and the legislature and
senate to make a positive statement
of how they stand on the question of
closing the barrooms in Georgia,
and will throw all its influence to
those candidates who will agree to
abide the caucus action of the rep
resentative temperance element in
the next legislature. The people in
Georgia who favor a bill for the ab
olition of barrooms will be called on
to abide this action, and much liter
ature will be circulated throughout
the state in favor of this bill.”
I A bill to prohibit the sale of liq
uor by the drink in Georgia could,
we believe, be passed with the pro
vision that it should be endorsed by
a majority vote of the people before
becoming a law. Such endorsement
would surely be given.

Admiral Schley Vindicated.
Before the court of inquiry last
Thursday and Friday Admiral Schley
testified in his own behalf, giving a
clear history of the Santiago cam
paign, ending with the destruction
of the Spanish fleet, as he saw it.
As to the conclusion reached by
the people, our Washington corres
pondent gives a fair idea, as follows:
“Admiral Schley’s testimony clears
away the last shred of accusation
brought against him. It explains
many things imperfectly understood
heretofore, and places the blame for
them on the shoulders of Sampson
himself, to whose neglect to send
proper information they were due.
It also proves conclusively the ex
traordinary failure of the dispatch
service of the department during
the war; messengers sent to deliver
important information having con
fessed failure to do so, each believ
ing that the other had already done
as directed and that he himself was
too late to impart anything worth
mowing. All these things have been
Led up to by the testimony of other

of those who have followed the in

bring it out in vivid lines. A curious
