Poplar Street, Hexfc to Adams’ Warehouse. There is a story about Walker Breese Smith at Tuxedo -which is rather anrasing. Mr. Smith is one of the few New York men who wear a monocle. In his case—and he is always ready to admit it—it is ar ranged to cleverly conceal a glass eye, Mr. Smith Iwving-had the mis^ fortune to lose one of his eyes years ago. When golf -was in the height of its popularity, Mr. Smith went in for all the rigors of the game. He played nnder an instructor. This man was rather insistent upon his pupil following every rule of the game. He was constant in his in struction, “Put your eye on the ball.” At last Mr. Smith, after making several flukes in his strokes, was re minded again, ‘Tut your eye on the ball.” Suiting the action to the word and taking the meaning liter- ally. Smith, to the astonishment of the instructor and the horror of the caddie, removed his monocle, and then, taking out his glass eye, de liberately stuck it on the ball and, turning around exclaimed: “Now, there! Is that all right?” —New York Times. Bigger Grain Crops Possible. The department of agriculture is trying to push plant breeding in this country. It is a branch of farming work that" is pursued much more diligently in Europe than in the United States, and if it were carried on as it should be on this side of the water most important benefits would accrue to the pro ducers of our crops. Only within the last few years has it been real ized that plant life is to a wonderful extent subject to man’s, control. He is almost able to. act- the part of. a creator in the vegetable world, so greatly is it in his power to modify species by hybridizing and by arti ficial selection. The government is already conducting such work on quite an extensive scale.—Saturday Evening Post. Melting Iron In Five Seconds. The process is sug gested as being applicable to the melting-of rails and pipes. A Nautical Suggestion. “Charley, dear,” said young Mrs. Torkins, “did you say there was something wrong with the Sham* rock’s starboard tack?” tc I believe so,” was the absent- minded answer. “Dear me. Sold by druggists- The sultan of Turkey recently played an amusing joke at the ex pense of some medical experts at Constantinople. When the plague broke out in his capital, the sultan asked if anything was known as to the cause. On being informed that if was to be found in the state of the drinking water he called at onee for six empty bottles, which he had filled in his presence, all from the same one of the palace wells, placed his own seal upon them and then, without divulging their community of origin, handed all six to a promi nent analyst. To his amazement the report sent in was that four of the samples contained plague mi crobes. The fifth was merely pu trid water and the sixth was quite pure. Abdul Hamid calmly shrug ged his shoulders, and kept his thoughts to himself. , The General Wilted. On one notable occasion the czar reduced a Russian general to a frightful state of consternation. It happened soon after his accession and before his coronation that he was, cycling in the park at Gats- china, wearing, as was his wont, the uniform of a colonel. Something having gone wrong with his chain he got off to adjust it, and just at that moment a pompous general from a distant province passed. Not receiving the salute due to him the officer stepped up to the suppos ed colonel anatperemptorily request ed an explanation of the seeming discourtesy. “I am so sorry,” said the czar sweetly, “I have not yet had the honor of becoming acquainted with you owing to the shortness of my reign, or I should, of course, have done so.” It Is Hot In the Arctic Circle. Mrs. Aubrey Le Blond, whose name is more familiar to moun taineers as Mrs. Main, has been camping at Jaegersvand, by TJlfs- flord, in Lapland, and if any one im agines that a camp within the arctiq circle is a safe refuge from the heat of an exceptionally torrid summer this lady’s experience should unde ceive them, for her thermometer gayly varied from 55 to 83 degrees in the shade during the early part of August. Close at hand, too, there is a great lake, from which clouds of mosquitoes rise perpetu ally, but on the other side are great peaks, glacier clad, rising in white majesty to the silent sky, a very paradise—and almost an unknown paradise—for climbers.—London Standard.
