And so on with each successive letter of the word. Miss Annie Holleman won the prize—a candelabrum with a dainty yellow shade. A pretty souvenir of the occasion, as the color scheme waB yellow and was charmingly carried out in the din ing room where were bowls of jbnquils, yellow shades for the candles, and gelatine served in orange cups. Salted peanuts at the game tables, orange punch in the hall, sweet wafers, stuffed dates and nectar completed the delicious menu. Miss Holleman curteously pre sented her psize to the guest of honor, Miss Ruth Alexander of Forsyth. Miss Carrie Riley of Fort Val ley and Mrs. Linton B. Robeson of Marietta, with their presence added pleasure to this enjoyable ocoasion. ’ Thursday, March 6th, the club will be entertained by Mrs. H. T. Gilbert. Secretary. By 8crlbe. Our school is in a very flourish ing condition. Both teachers and pupils are very much enthused over their work. Map drawing and singing a specialty this week. We had a very enteresting pro gram Friday afternoon, consist ing of recitations, reading and songs in commemoration of George Washington, and a short talk on “liquid air,” by a visiting friend. Wimberly & Pate have opened up a new store here and their many friends wish them great suc cess. A new residence has been built here and and the bride and groom will receive a hearty welcome \ in their new home. Mrs. A. A. Smith, and Mr. Duke Pierce of Hawkinsville are visiting Mrs. 0. Pearce of this place. Mr. George 0. Lewis of Monte zuma was in our city last week. He visits our community real of ten these days. Mrs. J. E. Jones has been quite sick at her home near here. Mr, J. Butler Hardison visited Berry last Sunday. Messrs. Herbert E. Marshall and Freeman N. P09I visited our community last Sunday. Miss Aurie DuPree of Byron is a guest at Henderson this week. 2-24-02. Mr. and Mrs. Lon Howand and sou spent Sunday with the family of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Howard. Miss Eva Harper and Mr. Wade Howard spent Sunday with rela tives in Crawford county. Mr. Joe Heard had the misfor tune to have his buggy top torn off in a ruaway a few days ago, but we are glad to state he escap ed without injury. Tell his best girl he is again ready for travel ing. Mr. Earl Howard and sister vis ited their aunt, Mrs. Johnson,last Sunday. The pupils of the Howard School celebrated Washington’s birthday last Friday afternoon with very interesting exercises,ap propriate to the occasion. The pupils of this school are progress ing nicely with Miss May Hodges as teacher. Doubtless, you will hear from us again soon, as we ex pect to appear on the honor roll next month. This is an added feature of our school, and we are doing our best to please our teacher and parents by making a good record. We are glad to uote that Mrs. J. H. Howard is much better. Our community has been much saddened by the death of Mrs. El bert Hartley last Tuesday morn ing; she was well known and lov ed by all. Our sincere sympathy is with the entire family in their sore bereavement. The many friends here, of Miss Pearl Sawyers, of Pottersville, are much grieved at the sad acci dent which resulted in her death & few days ago. The body of Mr. Joe Miller, brought home from Anniston, Ala., was tenderly laid to rest at their family burial ground, near Powersville, on last Tuesday. —Last Thursday morning the dead body of an infant was dis covered in an unused cistern at Fort Valley. An inquest w held by Judge J. W. Mathews, by authority of Coroner Schilling. The investigation disclosed the fact that the infant was of color ed parentage, but nothing could be ascertained to designate the inhuman wretch who killed the child. ■WSIP' G-OODS Are fairly pouring in. We are told the subject, or particular work of an author, is named a.t one meeting for the next, and then the program embraces quo tations, an essay, discussion, reci tation, etc. The club is now com posed entirely of ladies, and we are told the meetings are decided ly enjoyable. The Georgia peach growers will meet in conference at the Hotel La nier in Macon next Wednesday, March 6th. At the same time and place the state board of entomology will be in gession. At last the robins have made their annual visit to this locality,and since Monday Perry boys have killed large numbers of them.
