Sharp Horse Traders.
Albany Herald;
Horse traders in this country
are proverbially sharp. To suc
ceed at the business, one must not
only be a'good judge of horseflesh,
but must be clever at dickering in
a diplomatic way ns well.
It seems that our British cous
ins, who have been buying large
numbers of horses and mules
from us for army purposes during
the past four years, have come
out second-best in their dealings
with our horse traders. The fig
ures show tha the average cost of
the 89,955 horBes and mules pur
chased fortlio United states army
during the last four years, was
$88.90, while the British agents,
during the Boer war, have pur
chased more than three times as
many animals in this country,
and paid for them an average of
$189. It is asserted, also, that
animals rejected by the American
purchasing agents were readily
accepted by the British.
The horse question is about to
become a scandal in the British
war department, and it is openly
charged in the English newspapers
that somebody connected % itS
the purchase of American horses
has pocketed a fortune. This
may be true to some extent, but
we are rather inclined to "the
opinion that the Britishers got
beaten in the deal with our sharp
American horse traders.

Italy’s Marriage Brokers.
Marriage brokers are a regular
institution in Italy. In Genoa
there are several marriage brokers
who have pooketbooks filled with
tho names of the marriageable
girls of the different olasses, with
notes of their figures, personal at
tractions, fortune and other cir
cumstances. These brokers go
about endeavoring to arrange
matrimonial alliances in the same
offhand mercantile manner which
they would bring to bear upon a
purely business transaction, and
when they succeed they get a com
mission of 2 or 8 per cent upon
tho dowry, with such extras of bo
il uses as may be voluntarily be
stowed by the party.

The Live Stock Industry.
A very interesting report has
just been issued from the Census
Bureau at Washington, which
shows that the value of the live
stock in the United States, June
I, 1900, exceeded $8,200,000,000,
being an increase of nearly 1,000
million dollars in the valuo of
such stock in the past ten years.
This means that the live stock
wealth of the country has increas
ed over 500 per ceiit in the time
named, or twice as fast as its pop
ulation. Iowa is likewise shown
to be the banner state in contri
butions to live stock wealth, the
total for 1900 being $271,844,084,
a record well worthy of special
mention.

What it Obst to Sink The Spanish
Fleets.
Washington, D. C., March 3.—
The cost of shot and shell that
destroyed the Spanish ships_ at
M mull a and Santiago has beerr,for '
the first time calculated by Rear j
Admiral Charles O’Neil, naval or-J
dllaance chief, who shows that the!
bottle with Cervera’s squadron
cost the Government in amount
of mmunition expended, just
$84,884, while it required but $50,-
000 worth of ammunition for Ad
miral. Dewey’s fleet to put the
Spanish out of action at Manila.
The total weight of ammunition
expended in the Santiago fight,
including powder, was 165 tons,
and the total weight of metal
thrown was 118 tons. There were
8,474 rounds fired. The Oregon
fired 1;908 rounds, at a total cost
of $24,960, and the Brooklyn, 1,-
974 rounds, at a cost of $18,640.
At Manilla the total weight of
ammunition expended, including
powder, was 182 tons, '.there
were 5,858 rounds fired. The Bal
timore leads, with a total to her
credit of 1,484 rounds, at a cost of
$10,984. The flagship Olympia
was next, with 1,677 rounds, at a
cost of $10,605.
The comparative merits of fat
and le m men have beeu variously
estimated. Some observers of a
statistical turn of mind have late
ly been taking stock of the man
in the street in New York. Among
1,000 New Yorkers, from ohe age
of 20 upward, over 28 per cent,
showed an abnormal development
in the abdominan region. In a
poor quarter the percentage of fat
men was about 14, but in Broad
way, where the well-to-do most
congregate, it was about 85. In
the corridors of a high-class resi
dential hotel the number of
obese individuals in a totol of 100
was 70, while in a humbler cara
vansary tho percentage sank to 11,
the lowest point anywhere noted.
Although,* among 1,500 adults,
taken at random, 447 were corpu
lent to the degree of deformity,
giving an average of 29.8 per cent
This leads a British contemporary
to consider that the American
type no longer runs to tho lean
and lank.
The resistance of cedar wood to
decay has long been famous, and
cedar fenceposts often last for gen
erations. A remarkable instance
of the indestructibility of cedar
has been noted in the state of
Washington, where a forest of
hemlocks near Acme has grown
up over an ancient buried forest
of cedars. The trunks of cedar,
although lying in a moist soil,
have been almost pefectly preserv
ed for at least 150 years, the
length of time that the rings of
growth show the hemlocks to
have been growing above their
fallen predecessors.

Baltimore, Md., March 30, 1001.
Gentlemen / — Being entirely cured of deaf ness,, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you
a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion. in.tUWTfflf
About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost
my I under Jent^treatmint 6 fol catarrh, for three months, without any success, insulted a num.
ber of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that
only an operation could help me, and even that' only temporarily, that the head noises would
then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever.
I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York, paper, and ordered your trea^

to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you
