The World’s [Republics. Atlanta Constitution. What- may be called the era- of modern republics began with the declaration of independence in 1776, when the United States of America threw off the yoke of Great Britain and became one of the separate and distinct powers of the globe. So wonderful has been our growth since achieving our independence of Great Britain that other countries have been induced by our example to try the experiment of popular self-gqvernment for themselves, and today there are not less than twenty- live republics iff existence through out the globe. Most of them are in prosperous conditions, and year by year new ones are .being constantly added to the number. At the close of the American rev olution this country stood alone as the champion of republican liberty, and under the flag of the new gov ernment there were lesB than 3,000,- 000 people who enjoyed the privil eges and immunities of republican institutions, but today, under the various nationalities which are mod eled upon the government of the United States, there are fully 220,- ■000,000 of people embraced in the citizenship of the world’s different Republics. The complete list of na tionalities which are now governed by free institutions is as follows: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uhili, Co lombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Gauteraala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexi co, Nicaragua, Orange Free State, Paraguay, Peru, Salvador, San Do mingo, Switzerland, the Transvaa 1 , the United States, Uruguay, Venez uela, Liberia and Cuba. Most of these republics are located • on this side of the water, only five (being found on the other. Our own great republic comes first and is fol lowed in order by Franoe, second; ^Brazil, Third, and Mexico, fourth. But the fruits of the republican 'principle of government is not re stricted to those countries which are today included among the number of republics, but likewise extends to those countries which though still moiinrohial in form have been greatly nroditied by reason of the .growth of republicanism throughout the globe. With the progress of the twentieth century the victories of the republican idea of government -will become still more worldwide. Don’ta for Literary Beginners. Don’t tell the editor what your family or friends or literary acquain tances say of your manuscript. Don’t urge the Gditor to buy your manuscript because you need the money to help you in contributing to the support of your family or in making your way through college. Don’t assume a jaunty, saroastio or insistent tone’ with the editor. .Don’t ooyly ask him to “permit this diterary dove to nest in your olive- tree or else return it to the ark at the above address.” Don’t try to temper the severity of his judgment by sending him ipressed flowers with your maim- script, or to impress him with your literary power and experience by telling him that you “write on the ■ spur of the moment and never cor rect.” Bear in mind, in short, thai the best way to submit a manusoript is simply to Bubmit it and let it speak (for itself.—Franklin B. Whittle, bound for the city, one morning recently. The car left Turpin Hill on time, and all went as merry as a marriage bell until No. 28 reached a point .near the corner of Jackson and I Walker streets, then the trouble be- ! gan. | Mortorman Whittle was looking ; ahead, little suspecting danger, when ■he espied a dark cloud and several , small boys. The cloud buzzed and moved towards the car, while the small boys did their best to get that cloud to light op a tree, just like clouds do, of course, every day. On came the car, and on came the trouble, dark, foreboding. The trou ble settled on the trolley vehicle and went right inside and sat down—on the ceiling. Then the cloud separa ted, and so did the passengers and motorman. You never saw folks leave a trolley car in such a hurry— they went out of the oar at both ends, and the motorman shut off the current and sought safety in flight. By this time you hove guessed that car No. 28 was oeoupied by a swarm of bees, and you have guess- td right. The fiery insects took complete possession and made a close examination of that car, while the dismayed motorman and passen gers stood at a safe distance and awaited developments. The bees got tired after a few minutes and left the car. Then the crew and passengers got on the de layed trolley and arrived late at their destination. And now the politician who was on board is being jollied about his having a bee in his bonnet. Don’t Start Wronj?. Don’t start the summer with a lingering cough or cold. Mr. Hawley looked down at his , wife with pitying indulgence as she j sat busily writing in a small, book the day after Christmas, says an ex- I change. “Copying that old list of | names and presents, my dear, I sup pose,” he said lightly. “Now, how much better it would be if you would just exercise your memory as I do mine, and save all this writing year after year. Why, I sent forty presents,” repeated Mr. Hawley, ris ing on his toes and falling on his heels to emphasize his statement, “and yet I make no note of them save in my mind, my dear.” “I know you are wonderful in that way, Henry,” said little Mrs. Haw ley, meekly, “but I’m sure I should make mistakes if I didn’t keep a list. Oh, here’s a letter that came to you from Jack in the last mail this after noon.” The indulgent smile lingered on Mr. Hawley’s face as he opened his letter, but it faded and his color heightened as he read his nephew’s communication: Dear Uncle: Thank you very much for the handsome Jcopy of “Vanity Fair ” I am sure, as father says, that I shall enjoy reading it just as much as I did when you gave it to me last year and the year before and the year before that.
