To the Democratic Voters of Hous ton County. The sub-committee to whom was delegated the authority to assess the various candidates an amount to de fray the expenses of holding the pri mary election on June 5th, 1902 have made-their assessments, as fol lows: U. S. Senator, $5.00 Governor, 2.00 State House Officers, 2.00 Prison Commissioner, 2.00 Justice Supreme Court, 2.00 Congressman, 10.00 Judge Superior Court, 6.00 Solicitor General, 7.60 State Senator, 6.00 Members Legislature, 3.00 Sheriff, 6.00 Clerk Superior Court, 3,00 Tax Collector, 3.00 Tax Receiver, 2.50 Treasurer, 2.50 County Commissioner, 1.00 Coroner, 1.00 County Surveyor, 1.00 The above amounts must be paid to J. P. Duncan, Secretary of Exec utive Committee, on or before the 26th day of May, 1902, as no candi date’s name will appear on the ticket unless his assessment is paid on or before said date. All democratic white voters who have registered in 1901, or who shall register within 10 days before the primary in 1902, shall be entitled to vote at said election. All voters are required by law to vote at their own voting precinct, except that they may vote at the voting precinct at the court house from any district in the county. This is made. necessary because the registrars will furnish to the pre- oincts away from the court house only the registered voters in that district, but will furnish to the man agers at the court house a list of all the registered voters in the county. The returns must be brought to the court house by 12 o’clock m. on the 6 th day of June, by one of the managers, and not by a clerk or any one els6 or sent by mail, as it is the duty of the managers from the vari ous precincts to consolidate the vote. The voting precincts will be the same as in the primary of 1900. E\ ery democratic voter is urged to register, as you cannot vote un less you have registered as hereto fore stated A. 0. Riley, Chmn. Dem. Ex. Com. H. 0. J. P. Dunoan, Sect’y. A Card of Thanks. Henderson, Ga., May 6th, 1902, Under the providence of an All wise God, and after an illness of six months, our oldest daughter, Ann Eliza, fell asleep in Jesus on the evening of May 1st, 1902. During this long affliction our friends and neighbors were unceasing in their offers of assistance and expressions of sympathy, and when the sad end came, they all came with tender hands and sympathizing hearts to do ike last servise in putting our little angel to rest. While our hearts have always gone out in sympathy for our friends and neighbors in their afflictions, we feel now that we love them more than ever, and by God’s help shall be always ready to show our appre ciation of their unmeasured kindness to us. We have been making the journey of life together more than 31 years and this is the first time the mantle of death has fallen upon our home. None but God knows how hard it is to bow in consistent submission to such a dispensation and yet, we trust, we are ready to say from our hearts, “Thy will, oh Lord, be done.” 0. Pearce and Wife A press special from Americus on May 5th says: “A most destructive hail storm has swept a small section near Americus, obliterating the crops and orchards on the Clay, Bagley McGarrah plantations. The dam age wrought was severe. Mr. Bag- ley lost nearly a thousand acres of fine cotton, not a stalk remaining, while his magnificent peach orchard was ruined for the season. Cotton and corn fields generally sustained irreparable damage.” Recently unsigned reports were sent east from Nebraska and Kansas that the small grain crop was a fail ure, Careful inquiry, however, brings the official information that the grain outlook in those states is up to the standard and that the reported lack of moisture is untrue. It is believed the report of crop failure was for the purpose of raising the price of wheat, Mossy Hill Notes. BY fcOOKS. It is getting very dry and the ground is too hard for nice work. Grain has begun to suffer, and the larger portion of the cotton crop will not come up until it rains, but the prospect is good for a shower to-night. We have much for which we should be thankful, however, for the winter undershirts have made connection with the gauze ones, and while the strawberry crop is a fail ure, the outlook for blackberries and plums is all right. Old Uncle Winter Coleman,a very aged and good negro, died on the Hill last week. No one seemed to know the age of Uncle Winter. My first recollection of him dates back fully sixty years, when he was a ser vant of Dr. J. T. Coleman, and then on account of his extreme age he was addressed as “Old Uncle Win ter.” For several years he had been the stock minder and feeder for Mr, E. B. Till, and was always faithful in the discharge of his duty. Mr. Till showed full appreciation of the faithful service of the old negro by having him well nursed and giving him the best medical attention in his last illness. Our Sunday Schools will picnic at Taylor’s Ford next Friday. Mr. J. J. Langston, one of the crack farmers on the Hill, had his corn crib broken open last night. Mr. Langston succeeded in getting a shot at the theif, but doesn’t think he hit him. Candidate T. Y. Fagan was on the Hill last week, and made many friends who will be glad to see him succeed. MisB Minnie Davis, after a de lightful visit to friends near Elko, has returned home. Her cousin, Miss Mary Frances ManD, came with her to spend a few days. Mrs. C. B. Till visited Elko this week. Several candidates passed over the Hill Saturday and took in the picnic at Taylor’s Ford. Bonaire Items. By Punch and Judy. Bonaire was visited by a hard rain, accompanied by a great deal of hail, Sunday afternoon. While the crops were hurt some by the hail, the good that the rain did far over balanced it. Mdras. Creed and Clayton Sasser and Miss Gertrude Sasser are visit ing relatives in Macon. They were accompanied by Mr. Creed Sasser, who returned Friday. Miss Ellen King left Saturday to visit relatives in Americus. Miss Susie Walker returned home Saturday from a pleasant stay in Gro vania. Several of our young people visit ed Kathleen Sunday afternoon, and returning were treated to a ducking, having been caught in the rain. They looked as mad as wet hens. Quite a number of Bonaire people were shopping in Macon Saturday. A few of the young men around here were anticipating an enjoyable night last Friday, but after getting lost in the swamp and wandering around until nearly midnight trying to find the camp, they concluded that fishing is not what it’s “cracked up to be.” The Bonaire Sunday School will have their annual picnic at Sandy Run creek, where the old Methodist church was. Everybody is invited, especially the candidates. The Bonaire and Wellston literary schools will picnic at Beech Haven on the 23rd of May. The railroad has offered to give us a very low rate, and everyone that goes may be assured that they will have a good time. All are invited. Mr. Y. E. Heard, of Heard, ,6a., passed through here Monday en- route to Avondale. Mr. B. B. Barker visited home folks Sunday. The Methodist church here has been undergoing some repairs lately and presents a much neater appear ance on the inside than it did be fore. We will have preaching here every second Sunday by Rev. H. U. Brewton, and every third Sunday by Rev. Geo. Walker. Sunday school every Sunday at 10 o’clock. A Card of Thanks. To our neighbors and friends who so freely and kindly sympa thised and helped us in the" sick ness and death of our brother and nucie, T. T. Martin, we extend our sincere thanks. J. D.
