— Hi I T»rMK ...
MBHH
Registration for the Primary,
Citizens of Houston county who
desire to participate in the demo
cratic primary on June 5 th must re
member that they cannot vote unless
they register, and that next Monday,
Hay 26th, is the last day on which
they can register.
On that day the books now in the
several districts, and the book at the
court house, will be in the hands of
the tax collector, who will make an
alphabetical list of all the names
therein.
Then the registrars will revise the
list and strike off the names of all
who may not be qualified to, vote.
They then will make a complete list
for use at the court house, and a
separate district list for each of the
other precincts.
The registrars are Messrs. R. N.
Holtzclaw, W. H. Buff and W. E
Boler.
The information we have received
is to the effect that the registration
is now almost full, greater than in
1900. Two years ago the primary
vote was 1285, and now the indica
tion is that the vote on June 5th
will be very nearly 1400.

The Art of Oonversation.
Composition by Lula Hurst of Perry Public
Sohool.
The art of conversation is acquir
ed by reading good books and by
hearing people talk who express
themselves in the speech of edu
cated writers.
Thought lies back of speech, and
the more subjeots interest us the
greater oommand of language we
shall have in which to express them.
They who use the very best words
to say what they have in their minds
will consult the dictionary and see
what are the contrasts of certain
words, and will choose, as among
gems, the flawless ruby or crystal.
To gain acquaintance with the art
of conversation one must devote
many years of hard labor to a never-
remitted task, and to shine in con
versation we need only take oppor
tunity as it comes, be thoughtful of
others, be careful what you say, and
how you say it, and take pains to
express your thoughts in tha moBt
fitting phrases. The reading of good
authors lifts our vocabulary from
meanness to nobility and splendor,
enriches our speech and furnishes us
with allusions, quotations and phras
es which are picturesque.

Byron vs. Walden.
On last Saturday afternoon Byron
crosped bats with Walden on the
Walden diamond, and by the fine
bittery work of Rushing J. and
Bayne it seemed as if Walden had
been missing in runs.
The features of the game were
the fine pitching and batting of
Rushing J., and the fine catching of
Bayne and four home runs. Four
men were caught out on first base
by the champion first baseman
Rushing B., and our man Newman
is somewhat a mistery on second
base for any man that starts from
first down to second.
The score stood ten to one in fa
vor of Byron.
On next Saturday we intend to
play G. H. S. of Macon, and hope to
see a large crowd out, for it will be
the prettiest game of the season, as
the Macon boys never let a ball hit
the ground, and we intend doing
the same thing. B.
Last Saturday morning four offi
cers and three negroes were killed
in a negro suburb of Atlanta called
Pittsburg. An ex-policeman had
been severely beaten by several ne
groes Friday evening. City and
county policemen sought to arrest
the negroes, who had shut them
selves in a house. As the officers
approached, the negroes fired with
Winchester rifles. The trouble con
tinued several hours, and several
persons other than those killed were
wounded. The bouse in which the
negroes took refuge was burned.
The reports of the volcanic erup
tions on the islands of Martinique
and St. Vincent published last week
were not overdrawn. Relief in mon
ey, food, clothing and other necessi
ties is being supplied. Next to
France and England, the owners of
the islands, the government and the
people of the United States have
given most munificently. New York
sent the first ship-load of supplies,
worth many thousands of dollars.
A close price on flour by barrel.

Don’t Want Nesbitt, It is Stevens
> Everywhere.
If the practical business record of
Hon. O. B. Stevens as State' Com
missioner of Agriculture is not suf
ficient reason for his nomination on
June 5th, the following from the
Dahlonega Signal ought to convince
the doubtful:
“The farmers and business men of
Cobb county, the home of Hon. R.
T. Nesbitt, refuse to aid or support
Mr. .Nesbitt in his campaign for
Commissioner or Agriculture, on the
ground of unfitness, and the indica-
cations are now that he will retire
from the race. The administration
of Hon. O. B. Stevens, the present
encumbent, has proved so valuable
to the state that the voters do not
intend to put in a man who is in
many respects unfit for this import
ant position. When a man enters a
campaign and afterward finds that
his home county is against him, it is
time for him to “get off the roost”
without further ceremony. There is
not a man in the state, however, who
could defeat Mr. Stevens, whose
eleotion is now practically assured.
Lumpkin, as will the other counties
in this section of the state, will give
him a solid cubic-foot vote.”
A vote for Stevens is a good busi
ness vote. He deserves endorsement.
