Great Salt Lake Drying Up.. Within fifty years from the pres ent time the" Great Salt Lake of Utah—the most remarkable body of water of its kind ii^ the world, says the Saturday Evening Post—will have ceased to exist. It will have dried up, and its place will be occu pied by an unattractive desert, save perhaps for a few irrigated, farms. Suob, at all events, is the opinion of geologists. Prof. W. J. McGee, of .Washing ton, remarked in a conversation the other day that half a century was an outside estimate for tho survival of the lake. He was inclined to think that it wolild be dried up twenty- five years from now. Already its waters show signs of receding from' the shores, and causes are in opera tion which lessen t,o a great extent the supplies furnished this curious inland sea by streams. The lake is about 75 miles long by half that in greatest breadth, being in shape somewhat irregular, and is rather shallow. There may be-places where it has a depth of as much as 100 feet, but over most of its area it is less than 50 feet deep. The reason why it is so salty is simply that it has no out let save through evaporation, and the streams through ag6S past have been carrying into it. The contrib uting streams are now beginning to be utilized on a. large scale for irri gation purposes, and thus the cus tomary water supply is being with held to some extent from the lake. Before long immense reservoirs will be constructed in the mountains to hold the storm waters during the rainy season, in order that they may be conserved and poured out over the fields in the dry time. Opera tions of this kind, conducted so ex tensively, must lower the level of the lake quite fast. Leads Them All. The Story of The Locomotive. “One Minute Cough Cure beats all other medicine I ever tried for coughs, colds, croup and throat and lung troubles,” says D. Scott Currin of Loganton, Pa. GRAY, Mag’v. 466 Poplar St. MACON, GA. Albany Herald, In the Philadelphia Record re cently Mr. John H. Converse tellB the story of the Baldwin Locomo tive Works, and, incidentallythe story of “The Development of the Iron horse” is told. The story is an interesting one. : The history of the locomotive in the United States practically covers the history of railroad achievements throughout the world. Without the locomotive there would have been no rail ways, Mr. Converse’s recital is a plaiii and unadorned marshalling of facts, covering a period of sev enty years, beginning.with the la- borous building of Mr.. Baldwin’s first locomotive in 1882, which cost a year’s toil, and traversing the vicessitudes and triumphs which end in the magnificent ac complishment of the present time, when with a plant covering thir ty-three acres of ground and em ploying 11,500 men and 7,000 horse power there is a constructive capacity of five locomotives per day for every work day in the year. It easily outruns the limit of the human imagination* when any one undertakes to compass and set forth the part the loco motive flayed in the advance of civilization in the latter years of the nineteenth century. It has compacted states by tying them together and making the surplus of ofie the supply of the other. It has bridged the continents. It has so cheapened the movement of men and of material as to bring all products to all markets. It has uplifted the masses by lowering the cost of living and facilitating the spread of intelli gence. Perhaps the Surest test of its benificent contribution to the sum of- human comfort an$ hap piness would be realized 'if we should undertake the conception of how we should get along with out it. Items^of Interest. The Consumption Of Liquor. The consumption of spirituous liquors for drink in the United States is gradually diminishing, whSn considered in comparison with the increase of population. The official reports show that the average production and importa tion of distilled spirits for the entire country do not amount to , \and 90,000,000 gallons .a year from this not less than ten per cent must be deducted for spirits used in manufactures and the arts. This would leave a little over a gallon for drink to each head of the population in a year, which is far below the average in Great Britain, France and Ger many. The fact is apparent that the consumption | of spirits for drink in the United States is far from keeping pace with the in crease of population. While some drink more than their share of liquor, a temperance reform is silently but steadily in progress among the masses of 'the Ameri can people.—Ex. Don’t Fail To Try This.
