Public School Items.
The County board of education
held a meeting at the office of
Commissioner Smith in Perry last
Saturday.
On account of several teachers
laving resigned because of ap
proaching marriage, and for oth
er reasons, other,, teachers were
elected.
The 1908 term of Houston pub
lic schools will begin on the first
Monday in January, the 6th day.
The board adopted Hutchinson’s
Physiology, to be taugbt in the
publio schools.
Prof. D. R. Gammage of Desot.a
waB elected principal of Ben Hill
Academy.

the resignation of Miss Rushing.
Miss Ella Hancock has resigned
her pbsition as principal of Red
Level school.
It is rumored that another young
lady teacher has decided to for
sake the sohool room for matri
mony. As several young ladies
have quit teaching within a few
months because of their aproach-
ing marriage, we may infer that
the young men are satisfied that
.Houston school teachers make ex
cellent wives. As much may be
said, however, of all Houston
young ladies, :
The county board and Oommis
sioner Smith propose to advance
the publio school interests of *the
county as much as possible next
year.
Surprised the Pastor.
The Byron oorresponden t t of the
Fort Vailey Leader tells the fol
lowibg incident of Thanksgiving
day at Byron:
“On Thanksgiving evening at
about 7 o’clock, the parsonage
door bell rang; as the pastor, B.
EJ. Whittington opened the door,
the tall figure of Mr. W. H. Ezell
with a sack of flour on his shoul-
lier; loomed iq> before him, and
lie beheld a crowd with various
paokages of various sizes. . The
visitors were gladlyi invited in,
relieved K>f their burdens and ask-
into the sitting room. After two
short speeches by Messrs. Ezell
and Whittington, the evening was
spent in pleasant conversation,
spioed with rare jokes from the
speakers*”
“The African Emigration Band
A negro representing himself as
a manager oi “The African Emi
gration Band”
. Houston
county, with headquarters at Fort
Valley. His name is Asberry
Heath, and he comes to Perry'this
week. Tuesday , he soattared a lot
of dodgers, and talked to all who
would listen to him.
His dodger is addressed to white
and''colored. To the white citi
zens, the dodger says:
“To as many as will aid us by
money or otherwise in returning
to our Fatheidand, will confer
upon^us, the. African Emigration
Band, a lasting obligation*”
“To the Colored Race:-Greot-
ing:-We extend to you a cordial
invitation to join us in our return
to Africa. Come one I Come all,
and join the African Emigration
Band.
“Initiation fee $1,00.
“Dues per month, 50 cents.
“Only seven dollars and a half
per year.”
Just what the scheme is. we
were unable to learn, but it seems
“Tbe Band” is after money, and
the likelihood is the “band” will
keep all fees and dues received.
The “Manager,” was not very
cordially received at Perry, the
negroes here saying this country
is good enough ior them.
It will be well for tho scheme to
be thoroughly investigated before
any money is given the alleged
managef.
The dodger referred to is dated
