fully instructed, Israel can strike
camp, or pitch camp as quickly as
any well-drilled army. When the
pillow of cloud began to rise then
was the esmp- struck, aud the
cloud was followed until it stood
still; then uuder the cloud did
they rear the tabernacle again.
The Tabernacle having been
first erected at foot of Mount Si
nai in 2614, it was the glory of
our God to meet and talk to Mo
ses, the leader of so dependent a
host, as was the multitude of Is
rael, and remained so as long as
they were obedient to- the Lord’s
counsel. They were only stock-
raisers while on their journey, for
the 40 years, being fed on manna,
and their clothing failed them not.
In 2552 they camped on the plains
of Moab east of Jordan; and
though this post, east of Jordon,
was not properly Canaan, yet
Moses despoiled kings Sihon and
Og of it, and divided the laud to
Reuben, God, and the half tribe of
Manassa. Moses having, during
this ye&r, 2552, made the division
of land to 2f tribes, setting things
in their proper order that the
people may now begin to culti
vate the lauds, he also repeats
His charge to Israel anew, goes on
Pisgah and views Canaan west
ward beyond Jordan, and there
dies at the age of 120 years, hav
ing served the Lord as a represen
tative for 80 years.
Aaron, the high priest, died on
Sunday, July 28rd, 2552, leaving
the priesthood to sons of Levi.
This leaves only but Joshua and
Oabb who were 20 years old when
they left Egyj)t. Now the chief
ruler and lawgiver being dead, one
would expeot a change in their
laws and eonduot, but no. Josh
ua was worthy of his position and
was valiant in the discharge of
duty, yet he made some mistakes,
but the Lord heard his confessions
and corrected his errors. Joshua,
on Thursday, March 22nd, 2558,
commanded the people to be
ready cross Jordan on Sunday,
" "arch 26, and drew a military
roe of 40,000 for a defense.
While brossiug the river he had 12
stones taken- from its bed with
whioh to build an altar at their
oamping ground in the valley of
Jerioho, Canaan, and called this
altar Gilgal. It is here that Josh
ua renews the ordinance of oir<
cumoision, and on Thursday,
Maroh 20, they keep the passover.
On Sunday, April 1st, manna
failed to beon the ground, iVhich
shows that the last falling of man
na was on the morning of Friday,
Maroh 80th, 2658,
Here, near to Jericho, Joshua
maps his plans for the capture,
possession and distribution of Ca
naan proper. See the fear of Ra-
lab, and the faithful keeping of
the promise made to her by the
E ies, when Jericho fell before
e forces of Israel, andtheiuvis
ible power of the Lord.
For 6 years Joshua pressed the
enemy until in 2559 Israel is reo-
oguized as the ranking power of
earth. Joshua in 2560, takes Shi
loh as the capital of Israel, in
whioh oity he puts the ark. of the
Lord, and there it stays for 849
years; though in the year 2559,
Hophui and Phineas, sons of Eli,
dared to carry the ark of the Lord
before Israel’s army against the
Philistines, thus tempting the
Lord; but this failed them, and
the Philistines at the battle of
Ebenezar defeated Israel, this the
third time, and took the ark to
themselves, und set it in the tem
ple by their god, Dagon, which
by infinite power, bowed to the
ark in humility, even to its de
struction. For seven months the
Philistines kept the ark, but lo, a
ourse followed in its strange
abode, then they returned it to
Israel at a rook in the field of
Joshua, Eli, on hearing of Isra
el’s defeat at Ebenezer, the death
of Haphin and Phineas, and the
loss of the ark, he fell dead at the
gate 1 of Shiloh.
In 2561 Joshua having finished
his part in life, went the way of
all the earth. Now from 2559,
when Israel was fully established,
Israel was ruled by Elders, and
sonB or prophets m their differ
ent tribes for 400 years, to the be
ginning of King Saul.
In 8009, when Samuel had put
Saul ou the throne of Israel, the
people rejoiced exceedingly and
gave praise to their first king for
his personal development of man
hood; and attired him as was the
custom of their neighboring na
tions. Samuel and his sons, Joe
and Abia, were judges in Israel
for 100 years.
Early in the reign of King Saul
Samuel annointed a lad of about
10 years old, of the family of Jes
se, who in time became famous
as a musician, dextrous with
sling-shot, more daring than they
all in fight, received praise of
populaoe without becoming vain
honored with a wife from the
king’s family, bore the insults of
a father-in-law without seeking
redress and lost, his anointment
gave to him the throne of Israel
at the death of King Saul in 3049
I’ll now give the rules of Israel,
as kiugs over that part of Israel
known as the house of Judah
Saul from 8009 for 40 years; Da
vid 40 years, and Solomon 40
years over all Israel. In 8129 be
gins the lasting division of Israel
known as Judah and* Israel. Re-
haboin 17 years, Abijoiu 8 years;
Asa 41; Jehoshaphat 25 years; Jo-
ram 8 years; Ahaziah 1 year;
Queen Athalia 6; Joash 40; Ama-
ziah 29 years; Azariah 62 years;
Jotham 16 years; Ahaz 16 years;
Hazekiah 29 years; Mauassah 55
years; Amon 2 years; Josiah 81
years; Jehoiakim 11 years; Zede
kiah IP yeaijs, to fall of Juda to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
in 8522.
A division of Israel was at
tempted at the death of King
Saul, t aud it took King David 2
years to dispel the opposition to
him’, after national disturbances
were^ settled. Israel remained
unit' until the death of King Sol
omon, and ’tis now comes the
lasting division of Israel as a uni
ted people, between Rehaboim as
king for Juda, and Jerraboim
ns king for Israel in 8129.
This faction of 10 tribes of Is
rael retained their national name,
Israel, aud the other two tribes,
Judas, Benjamin, are known as
Judah. And it may here be said
the 10 tribes having departed from
their former rulings are said to
be lost, not having God’s blessing
upon them, nor did they have the
oracles of God to guide them, and
they became contaminated with
the nations around them in every
respect. (Politics not being the
least,) they were ever warring and
often without a known ruhr; and
in this way did Isruel exist, from
the days of Jerraboim in 8128 to
8889, when Salmanza, king of As
Syria captured them.
The house of Israel was con-
quered and become subject to As
syria 188 years before the house
of Juda fell in 8522. And then
they again unite as a vexed aud
outdone people not being able to
sing the song of Zion in this
strange land..
Bobbed the Grave.
A startling incident is narrated
by John Oliver of Philadelphia as
follows: “I was in an awful con
dition. My skin was almost yel
low, eyes sunken, tongue coated,
pain continually in back and sides,
no appetite, growing weaker day
by day. Three physicians had giv
en me up. Then I was advised to
use Electric Bitters; to my great
joy, the first bottle made a deci
ded improvement. I continued
their use for three waeks, and am
now a well man. I know they
robbed the grave of another vio-
tim.” No one should fail to try
them. Guaranteed. Only 50o at
Holtzolaw’s Drugstore.
