Premium Cotton.
A town farmer of Perry now
proposes to capture the premium
offered by the Houston couuty
Fair Association for the largest
single stalk of cotton.
In connection with the cultiva
tion of that stalk of cotton, there
is a condition that is to him a
mystery.
In preparing the land, he dug
a bole threet feet deep and as
many feet spuare, filling the hole
with stable and hen houss ma
nure, with a liberal amount of
guano, mixing thoroughly with
top soil. He planted several
seed, and afterward pulled up all
but one stalk. The cultivation
was thorough, and the growth sat
isfactory. However, a volunteer
stalk of cotton about six feet dis
tant is larger thau the pet stalk,
and contains more bolls.
Can any scientific farmer ex
plain the causes of this condi
tion?
Marshallville vs Perry.
On th*e Perry diamond last
Friday afternoon, there was a
contest game of baseball between
a team from Marshallville and
the Junior team of Perry.
As all members of the visiting
teaiii were not here, three
Hawkinsville players wer9 accep
ted to fill the vacancies.
The first two innings were de
cidedly “rooky,” more like foot
races in a hj podrome than any
thing else. In the first the visit
ors scored four runs, and the
home team followed with six. At
the end of the second the score
stood ten to six in favor of the
home team. The visitors didn’i
score again until the ninth in
ning, and the final score stood 16
to 7 against the visitors.
As base ball, the game didn’
rank high, but good humor pre
vailed, much activity was dis
played, and the spectators were
entertained.
