County Commissioners’
Houston county met ii_ a
monthly session Sept 1st, 1903, with
all the members of the court present.
Minutes of Jast court were read
and approved.
L. W. Smith, J. W. Tabor and W.
D. Tharp were appointed to lay off
and mark out road in Tenth and
Upper Fifth districts, said road de
scribed in August, 1903, minutes of
this oourt.
A petition was filed fora public
road “to be opened and established
from some 1 point on the Ferry and
Hawkinsville publio road near the
residence of J. A Berry to a point
op the public road from Sandbed to
Clark’s bridge opposite the Holtz-
elaw-Palmer place; said road to pass
the station of Tivola and run as
nearly east as practicable from said
first named point.”
A petition was read for a bridge
over what is known as Dry Branch
on the Hayneville and Hawkinsville
olio road. Referred to Commis
sioner Houser.
A petition was, filed “to obange
the public road from Perry to Fort
Valley in the Upper Town district
of said county, beginning on the
west side of Bay ereek, and leaving
the old publio road to the right, and
running west about one-quarter of a
mile, thence northwest about one-
half mile to the old public road. All
the road petitioned for will run
through what is known as the “Pat
terson place.”
Celia Jack, Chaney Bishop, Char
ity Nelson and Gabe Peavy’s wife
were each allowed $1.00 per month
from pauper fund.
It was ordered- that no steel
bridges be built at present, but that
at or before the ne?t regular meet
ing bids be received for wooden
bridges over Mossy creek and Bay
creek, to include abutments and fills.
Court then proceeded to levy a
county tax for Houston county for
the yettr 1903:
According to the digest, the ag
gregate value of all the taxable
property of the county appeared to
be $2,989,300. It was thereupon
ordered that a tax of two-tenths of
one per cent be levied upon all the
taxable property of the county for a
road fund, to be used for’working
and maintaining the publio roads;
and that a tax of four and and one
half tenths of one per cent be levied
upon all the taxable, property of the
county for all other purposes for
which the law authorizes and directs
county authorities to levy taxes.

This makes total rate of county
tax six and one-half tenths of one
per cent.
Whereupon, 1 court adjourned.

afternoons more pleasant, we find

Club.
Mrs. Wm. J, Moore invited us to
meet with her on the afternoon of
September 10th, and at the appojnt-
ep hour the guests assembled at the
hospitable home. Mrs. Moore was
assisted by her mother and daught

Most of our members have return
ed home from their outings and
majority were present, but a few

Well, Mr. Editor, we are still
jere with our (best foot foward.
Cotton picking was ourohief past
time last week and we have made
good headway toward, disposing
of the fleeoy staple. Some of
our farmers who were early, re
ceived 12 cents per pound for
their first bale. Our new twenty-
five bale capaoity gin is in opera
tion and has ginned one bale this
season, and our same old one-
horse gin, thirty-five. At this
rate it’s capacity cannot be test
ed.
Rev. A. A. Garrett of Fort Val

ment at Fellowship church Sat
urday and Sunday. The congre
gation Sunday was not as large
as it would have been had the
weather beer more favorable.
We are glad to say that uir
