Peruvian Guano Arriving.
Baltimore Sun.
A 4,000-ton cargo of genuine
Peruvian guano direct from the
Lobos Islands has just been land
ed at Baltimore by the British
steamer Condor. This is the
first full cargo of genuine Peruvi
an guano that has been brought
to this port since 1880.' The first
shipment sinoe that time was
/l*tons, delivered at the same
lace last May by the steamer
trathmore.
Prior to 1880 this guano was
brought to Baltimore by sailing
ships direct from the same is
lands, but these shipments were
discontinued ou acoount. of the
wars between Pern and Chile and
resulting litigation, whioh tied
up the guano deposits until a few
years ago. Since that time the
agent of the Peruvian Govern
ment haB continuously tried to
renew the importations of this
guano, but fouud no one willing
to take hold of it, as the price de
manded was regarded as too high.
The Peruvian Government finally
decided to reduce the price of the
Lobos guano.
The guano deposits are situa
ted on rooky islands and in the
gullies along the coast of Peru.
These plaoes have been for ages
the abode of innumerable sea
birds, such as pelicans, penguins,
etc. Here were their living and
breeding places and here they
died Oaptain Anderson, of the
Condor, says that there is estima
ted to be over 1,000,000 tons of
guano remaining on that island
alone and on adjaoeut islands,
and with deposits on the coast
there is practically au iuexhaust
ible supply.

According to the Clinton (Mo.)
Herald, the following notice was
recently found tacked on the door
of a local church: “There will
be preaching in this house a week
from noxt Wednesday, Providence
permittin’, aud there will be
preaching whether or no on Mon
day following upon the subject
‘He that believeth and is bap
tized shall be saved, and he that
believeth not shall be damned at
8:80 in the afternoon.”
Has Mr. Cleveland?
Says the Memphis News:
“If Bryan will how come for
ward and deolare unequivocally
that he will ’support the nominee
and platform of the next national
convention, the last stumbling
block in the way of complete con
cord will be removed. M
To whioh the Montgomery Ad
vertiser replies:
“Possibly so, but we shall not
undertake the feat of holding our
breath till he “oornes forward’
with such declaration.”'
Has Mr. Cleveland yet “come
forward” and declared “unequiv
ocally that lie will support the
nominee and platform of the next
national convention?” In the
language of the Advertiser, “We
shall not undertake the. feat of
holding our breath till he ‘comes
forward with suoh declaration.’ ”
Nd one, so far as we know, has
been able to ascertain if Mr.
Cleveland voted for the democrat
ic nomiuee for president, and sup
ported the platform of his party,
in the last two campaigns. Dem
ocracy in 1906 and 1900 waited
patiently for Mr. Cleveland to
come forward and deolare un
equivocally” that he would sup*
“ort the nominee and platform,
ut they waited in vain.
Yet these Olevelandites ory
loudly to Bryan to “oome for
ward and declare unequivnoally,”
but it'is all right for Cleveland to
“go way back and sit down” in si
lence. —Macon News.
Senator Hanna believes the
Democratic party will nominate
Judge Alton* B. Parker of New
York for president next year,
says Walter Wellman,. the spe
cial correspondent of the Phila
delphia Press at Washington. He
also believes Judge Parker will
make a strong candidate and
that, the Republicans will haye
to fight hard to carry New Yoik
state for President Roosevelt. He
has no fear that President Roose
velt is to be defeated, but he does
not share jrhe views of thos$ Re
publicans who think the battle is
to be won with ease.
Tests as to penetration of the
present rifle bullets in sand, loam
and steel show the penetration
into sand and loam at fifty feet
does not exceed six inches; at 600
yards, thirteen and one-half inch
es, and 1,000 yards,, sixteen and
one-half inches. At fifty feet the
velocity is so high that the bul
lets are completely flattened in
the first six inches, the sand not
having time to yield,
