Wonderful progress in the sav
ing of waste has been made in the;
country during the past decade or
two, but there is yet room for
great improvement in many of tho
avenues oS trade and industry* j
The conservation and utiliza
tion of things that have heretofore
been either thrown away or per
mitted to go to waste is being
stimulated by the demands of the
present world war. Here, for in
stance, is a case in point: A distil
lery, which had been notified by
the Conservation Commission of
Maryland to discontinue the pol
lution of state watofs contigous to
its plant, has made reply that it
had found means of utilizing its
waste in the production of potash,
and would not reopen until the
needed equipment had been in
stalled.
We have made progress in the
Utilization of by-products since tho
time when soap-makers allowed
their glycerine to run off into the
gutters; but every day marks some
new advance in the methods of
saving waste* In fact the word
“waste’’ may soon be eliminated
from the vocabulary of American
industrialism.—Albany Herald.
Do You Know Him? |
1 have been worried a good deal
because our Southern farmers of
ten seem inclined to follow leaders
with a gospel of hate and suspi
cion rather than one of love and
brotherhood.
I f hearing a man's speech leaves
you hating mankind more rather
than loving it more, or if read ing
an editor’s paper leaves you hat*
ing mankind more rather than
loving it more, that speaker or
that editor is not the right sort
of man to follow. I know a man
right now, a man who I believe be
gan life with a groat passion to
help the down trodden, but who
, has become embittered and now
uses his .really groat talent to
make one class hate another class,
one sect hato another sect, and

A Thought For 1 he Week.
God Almighty first plauted a
garden; and, indeed, it is the pur
est of human pleasures; it is the
purest of human pleasures; it is
tho greatest refreshment to the
spirit of man without which build
ings and palaces \ are but gross
handiworks; and a man shall ever
see, that when ages grow to civili
ty andologancy, moncome to build
stately soonor than to garden
finely; as if gardening were the
greatest perfection.—Lord Beacon;
Essay on Gardens.
A man who wall lose fifty dol

ter a complaint, then raise a howl
because his wife wauts ten dollars
with which to buy a^narked down
hat. It will be so as long as pok

Andrew M. Soule, President Georgia
State College of Agriculture.
During the coming year, and per
haps for several years, the United
States will be called upon to supply
the food requirements of her allies
as well as her own civilian popula*
tion. Above all it Is imperative that
the armies have sufficient supplies,
eyen though the folks at home suffer
hanger. Only by each person doing
his share can the war be brought to
a successful t conclusion. The soldier
boys do their part in fighting a ruth
less foq; your part is to produce and
conserve the food supplies. Your duty
is:
1. To grow staple fruit, garden and
farm crops. Let new and untried crops
alone.
S. To organize community farm la
bor so as to utilize farm machinery to
the best advantage. A traction en
gine in a community should be kept
busy. Business men should club to
gether to furnish machinery to farm
ers who cannot afford to purchase at
present.
3. To assist the Demonstration and
Canning Club Agents in their work.
Every family should can or evaporate
sufficient vegetables and fruits for
their own needs. In addition a hand
some profit may be derived from the
surplus.
4. Each community should take
stock of Its resources and require
ments. Strive to make your commun
ity Independent. ’ Organize a local de
fense league.
Future Prosperity and
Diversification of Crops
Georgia stands second In the pro
duction of cotton. She can hold her
place in the totaj value of farm crops
if her people profit by the opportun
ities she offers. Though her planters
may suffer temporary loss by diversi
fication they will more than balance
the account in the increased produc
tion of dairy products, beef and pork,
pouKly, peanuts, velvet beans, pota
toes, fruits, vegetables and cereals.
Evaporated Fruits
and Vegetables
Miss Lois Dowdle, Assistant State Su
pervisor Home Economics.
The can shortage this year threat
ens to be acute, large manufacturers
claiming a shortage of 100,000,000. Un
der ordinary circumstances it would
be possible for a family to can suf-
cient fruits and vegetables for their
own use, thus, liberating the supply
from the packers for shipment to the
allies. Home canning now seems to
be out of the question and the prob
lem is how to best preserve foods for
winter use. The solution is the home
evaporator. All kinds of vegetables, in
cluding potatoes, beans, corn, peas,
pumpkin and the more delicate root
crops may he dried, in which condi
tion this material will keep indefinite
ly. Evaporated vegetables and fruits,
when properly prepared, are more pal
atable and nutritious than canned
goods.. In addition there is the lower
cost of preparation and the ease of
storing over winter. A home evapora
tor may be made by any one who
knows hoy to handle carpenter tools
and at a very low first cost. Plans
for construction and directions for
evaporation may be had from your

BellMem’s Bid on Shells
for the United Stales Nary
To the American People:
The Secretary of the Navy has awarded
contracts amounting to over $3,000,0i)()
to s British bidder for 14 and 16-ineh
projectiles for the Navy because of very
much lower prices ottered by the English
bidders.
We know nothing of the basis upon which
the British bids were made, but the pub
lic is entitled to know the facts upon
which we ourselves bid for this work.
Two years ago we took contracts
to make 4,200 14-ln,ch shells at a
price of $1,515,000. Up to now
not a single shell has been ac
cepted by the Government, al
though we have expended, in
wages, materials, etc., on these
orders $522,001, and we have not
received a SINGLE DOLLAR on
these contracts.
In addition, a litoral interpretation of
the coulruot might mtiko us liubla lor
punultieu amounting to $678,016.
In the light, of our experience, and hav
ing tio other basis, we bid for 16-inch
shells approximately the same rate per
pound as that which the Navy Depart
ment actually awarded u 14-uioh shell
contract one year ago.

Make it a point
A Gorman econom ist has figured,
it out that in two more years tho
same shortage of footl that exists
in Germany will prevail in all tho
countries Germany is fighting. He
argues that the people of other
countries will not be willing ' or

this condition the issue of the
struggle will inevitably be decid

j Complaint of the Stupid.
1 It Is only stupkl people who complain'
that they "are-misunderstood. If they
v ere not stupid, they would know that
there is absolutely no such thing as. i
being understood, and, therefore that
there is nothing whatsoever to be
gained by complaining about it.
Wise people who want to be under-
, stood do not spend their time complain
ing, but in perfecting some means of
' expressing themselves by which they
i may reveal to the world about them
, some slight remnant, at least, of their
| souls, or their minds, or their ideas, or
] their discoveries, or their eccentrici
ties, or whatever it is they want to
make known.
When you complain about not being
understood, the only thing you make
clear is that you are a complaiuer.—

TpILTH MEANS DISEASE and files are born in filth, feed on filth
x and carry filth with them wherever they alight. Flies hatching
today in an outhouse, stableyard or in garbage, may bring distress to
your family later on in the summer. They may bring typhoid fever,
summer complaint, consumption, malaria, or perhaps infantile paralysis.
The fly is almost the exclusive conveyor of diarrhoea and dysentery
among children and babies.
