Favorable August Weather 8timuia>
ted Growth Of Nearly All
Crops
Atlanta.—Favorable weather during
August stimulated growth of all crops
excepting cotton, and September 1st
found nearly every crop as good or
better than the ten-year average of
condition. Apples are woefully short;
but peaches Jhave established a new
high record for quantity, while the
quality was of the kind that has
brought renown to Georgia. Corn and
cotton are also making history this
year. The corn crop promises to be
the largest Bince records have been
kept; and the cotton prospect is the
shortest In thirty years. Cotton Is
basic in Georgia. Optimism always
follows a good price, and just now
the farmers are saturated with opti
mism, for in thirty days they have
witnessed their great money crop in
crease in value nearly $30,000,000. In
dications are that more debts will be
canceled and more Improvements
started than was thought possible one
month ago. Forage crops for the
most part are so good in condition
as .to leave little to he desired.- The
number of hogs for fattening com
pares favorably with the number
about September 1 a year ago.
400 Cases Ready For U. S. Judge
Atlanta.—When the October term
of the United States district court
convenes in Atlanta on October 3, the
court will be confronted with one of
the heaviest criminal calendars In Its
history, and the 400 cases assigned
for trial constitute only a small por
tion of those pending on the dockets,
according to D. J. Meyerliardt, assist
ant United States district attorney.
Because of the unusually large num
ber of cases remaining unassigned for
trial, and the congested condition of
the calendar already considering the
possibility of a special session of the
criminal division. Of the 400 cases
on the October calendar, 337 Involve
alleged violations of the national pro
hibition act, and the remainder, prin
cipally, violations of the Mann white
slave and Harrison narcotic acts. A
small number of miscellaneous cases,
including peonage matters and thefts
from Interstate shipments,- will _ he
tried.
W. & A.,, Rent Case Taken To Courts

T. W. 1-Iardwlck against General Wil
liam A. Wright, state comptroller to
sign a warrant for $10,000 issued by
the governor .against the Western and
Atlantic rental fund and purchased by
the Bank of Tifton. The action was
brought as a test case to determine
the validity of the proposed issue of
$2,500,000 worth of these warrants
by tho state.
