noon the triple crown of St. Peter
was placed over the head of the new
bishop of Rome and the adulation of
the church and people reached its cli

Dawn of coronation day found the
streets and piazzas near St. Peterjs
cathedral swarming with humanity.
Every oncelvable kind of vehicle,
every class of people in every fash-,

throne. I
Women in mantillas of black, bare-'
headed and barefooted monks in'
brown, white and black, nuns in white

from the flaming red gowns of the
Germans to the black and violet of the
Americans; friarB and priests, soldiers,
civilians, state oficialB and peasants
jammed the concourse in one of the
most Inspiring public spectacles evei

It was announced officials ,that the
pope would not, as has sometimes been
done, bless the throngs from the bal
cony of St. Peter’s. Yet this mass oi
humanity stayed on and on hoping that
: his holiness would change the ordex
jof the ceremony. I
Tickets for forty thousand speettu I
tors had been provided. Fully 10,000
more forced their way Into the gates
when they were thrown open, leaving
still more thousands clamoring for ad
mission outside.
The interior of the basilica, where
the most impressive ceremonies of or
dination were carried out, was in gals
decorations. Beautiful tapestries hung
from the walls, and silk festoons were
draped from the ceilings. Candles,
thousands,of them, were before every
altar in the various chapels, fulfilling
the declaration that St. Peter's is "the
only temple In Christendom fitted fox
such a ceremony.
In the blazing light from the chan
defiers and candelabra, the wonderful
frescoes, mosaics and marble, the
stucco and gold ornamentation of the
interior scintillated like millions ol
jewels, heightening the glory of the
.ceremdny.

Alabama Lady Was Sick For Three

Qwa Story of Recovery.
Paint Rock, Ala.—Mrs. C. M. Stegall,
of near hero, recently related' the fol
lowing interesting account of her re
covery: "I was in a weakened con
dition. I was sick three years in bed,
Buffering a great deal of pain, weak,
nervous, depressed. I was so weak,
I couldn’t walk across the floor; just
had to lay and my little ones do the
work. I was almost dead. I tried
every thing I heard of, and a number of
doctors. Still I didn’t get any relief.
I couldn’t eat, and slept poorly. I
believe if I hadn't heard of and taken
Cardui I would have died. I bought
six bottles, alter a neighbor told me
what it did for her.
“I began to eat and sleep, began to
gain my strength and am now well
and Strong. I haven’t had any trou
ble since ... I sure can testify to the
good that Cardui did me. I don’t
think there is a better tonic made
and 1 believe it saved my life.”
For over 40 years, thousands of wo
men have used Cardui successfully,
in the treatment of many womanly
ailments.
If you suffer as these womon did#
take Cardui. It may help you, too.

Nine-Cent Knife Brings
Five Dollars in Chicago
Both knives were made in
Germany. Both are the same
size and equal in value. The
knife to the left retailed for 9.6
cents in Berlin. The one to the
right sold for $5 in Chicago.

i HAIRMAN FORDNEY, of the Ways and Means Committee of the .
United States House of Representatives, exhibited the knives photo
graphed above to Congress. One cost nine cents in Germany; the
other live dollars in Chicago.

Chicago firm bought the knife, which was manufactured by J. A. Henckels
in Germany, from the American agent of that firm. The Chicago store
paid $2.40 for it according to their own testimony giving the Chicago store
a profit of more than 100 per cent., but the German importer in New York
who bought it for nine six-*— 1 - u —*-■ - ---- - --

;-tenth cents in Germany and sold it for $2.40
!.80 on the deal. The consumer, according to Mr.'Fordney,
Testimony, before the U. S. Senate and House of Representatives
shows thut Paris hats,»whlch cost $3 in American money in France, are
selling here as high as $22.50; fine steel-cut buttons, costing 24 cents per
dozen, are selling for $2.00 per dozen. This is possible because the present
tariff law provides that imported articles shall be subject to duty on their
value in foreign money, and foreign money has dropped far below par so
that the government is losing millions of dollars per day in revenue and
the public is paying profiteering prices.
Chairman Fordney declares that the remedy is in the tariff bill now
Defore the U. S. Senate. It provides that imported articles must pay duty
on their value in this country. This is called “American, valuation.” Sup
porters of this bill say that importers and mail order houses are spending
more than one million dollars to defeat it because it means death to their
huge profits.
These adherents of American valuation also point out that never has
such a fight been waged in Washington against a bill in Congress as is
being waged against the Fordney tariff bill.
