president of the International Harves
ter company, has formally announced
the engagement of his daughter, Ma*
thilde, iaged 10, to Max Oser, 48-year
old proprietor of a Berne, Switzerland,
riding academy. The announcement,
following a day of conference among
the family, was issued through the
butler at the home of Mrs. Cyrus Mc
Cormick, mother of the harvestei
president, and no Intimation will be
made as to when the wedding will be
celebrated.
Undertakers War On Special Tax
Atlanta.—Claiming that the state
tax law on funeral directors is un
constitutional and discriminatory, the
undertakers of the city will file a
suit against tho state of Georgia to
test the validity of the law. The un
dertakers who have joined in the ac
tion against the imposition of the tax
are Barclay & Brandon, Greenberg &
Bond, Harry G. Poole, Awtry &
Lowndes, Donehoo & Basemore, A. S.
Turner, A. C. Homperly and H. M.
Patterson & Son, who will ask other
undertakers to join them.
Coal Minors Seeks To Prevent Eviction
Knoxville, Tenn.—An appeal for a
congressional investigation of the
threatened eviction of coal miners,
tl lr wives anid children of eastern
Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky
has been made to all representatives
in congress from that territory, S. A.

ed Mine Workers, Announces. The ap
peal made by tho district executive
board of the union recites that, in spite
of the fact that the miners of this dis
trict had a wartime agreement run
ning till March 31 they accepted a cut.
Trying To Find Work For Veterans
Washington.—The nation-wide cam
paign to find work for 700,000 idle war
veterans has been put under way by
the American Legion. First, the le
gion will make an effort to .put the
needy veterans—those with dependents
—to work and after that the others.
Col. Arthur Woods, chairman of the
president’s unemployment commission,
urges national co-operation in the
drive. He urges the creation of moi’fe
jobs and also called upon the idle to
make every effort to find jobs. He
asks a living wage for the men.

Bankers Indicted For Embezzlement
Marietta.—Indictments containing
twenty-two counts each Against George
H. Sessions and A. H. Gilbert, on
charges of embezzling $233,000 of the
Marietta Trust and Banking com
pany’s funds, were returned by the
Cobb county grand jury, and trial
of the bankers set. Following discov
ery by the state bank department of
a deficit of approximately $200,000 sev-
^pal weeks ago, the bank was closed
and warrants sworn out against Ses
sions and Gilbert, cashier and vice
resident of the institution.
